Omg this place is absolutely astonishing.. great history and an excellent vlog .. I fished many times in Portsmouth harbor and spent alot of time over in Gosport and never visited Portsmouth it's self, I'm sorry now I didn't.

very informative, however [current thinking] is that Carausius - the commander of the Roman Fleet around Britain who usurped power and declared himself Emperor of Britain and Gaul was in turn assassinated by his treasurer Allectus who is thought to have built the Saxon Shore forts [which I recently found out includes the outer- reconstructed- walls of Cardiff castle]... and as much to defend against Saxon raids but also Rome. Rome turned up in 296 and regained control .

It is a fantastic place to visit, and to see a genuine original Roman wall still standing, in full, to it's original hight is amazing, last time we were there we it wasn't quite so informative. Again thank you for your efforts and enjoy your Christmas.
I enjoyed the history of this incredible castle, it certainly has a very long history. It must have been an interesting place during those gap years, between 1814 - 1926, when it was left derelict and unloved. I can imagine it must have been overgrown, possibly a place for the destitute. Hard times to imagine 😉😊 great video

I've only ever before seen the picture on the English Heritage website, and that does no justice to the majesty of the place. If I hadn't watched your video I could have gone forever with out knowing its true size. As ever you guys open up historical horizons. 👏👍

I visited this castle mid 70s on a school day trip and can barely remember anything except the Keep seemed very high The film hasn’t triggered any memories. A fine castle Saxon raiders and pirates were beginning to plague Britannia Some were hired as anti piracy units by the Roman occupation of Britannia. Fascinating

Before you feel too much sympathy for Napoleonic prisoners of war, bear in mind that France was actively attempting to invade Britain at the time. French prisoners of war were treated no worse, and in fact rather better than many British prisoners of war were in France.
