Your passion for these retail giants and their once prominent place in daily life and popular culture, not just in commerce, is commendable. Well done.
I worked here as a manager in 86-87, and I haven't seen the place in over 30 years. This was the 2nd Kmart to open in Pittsburgh, Washington was first. There were still some original employees from 1962 working there when I was there.
The biggest thing that happened back then was the 1986 flood. Water came up to within 10 feet of the front door and there were cars floating down the creek than ran along side the store. After I left, there was a major renovation, the auto repair closed, the cafeteria closed, and all the original fixtures and looks disappeared. Oh well, time goes on; this store had a 55+ year run.

great video! I miss my local K mart here in my home town of Hialeah Fl. It's been gone now for about 2. 1/2 yrs. Now the building has been split up into a Bed Bath & Beyond. & some other department store, I can't think of the name right now. I pass by now a days & remember it was our old Big K Mart!! ... I miss it. it was an amazing old store. I remember it thriving back in the 90's & 00's ..... was great. so sad. 😢❤

pipes probably froze and they are trying to get the old boiler going with antifreeze in the system so I don't freeze again, just a guess.

I don't know about how often that happens at department / discount stores, But a lot of people became acquainted and later dated then married because they were regulars at certain grocery store or restaurant. Not any more unusual than if they went to the same bar.

All the Kmart stores were I live are gone. According to google maps, there are no more with in 500 miles or more. Kmart was not willing to change with the times. Old school stores are no more. What's going to happen in the future is that places are going to become automated and there will a lot more self checkouts.
I LOATH "Self Checkouts", If I have to piss around doing that my self, I'm better off with Amazon. Same reason I don't go to Subway. I get it the sandwiches are "custom", but If I have to think about each thing in a damned hoagie, I'll just go home and make it my self. My whole point of eating out is so I don't have to do ANYTHING.

I'm gonna make the drive from York PA for that pin. I want a Wallie pin, your my favorite UA-camr. Seriously I would but unfortunately my Jeep is down. But if you come to York PA at our closed Kmarts, yes there was two, along with Ames and Hills, some how let me know. Maybe Lancaster area, there's still a 90s Kmart there. Weird one because it's been remodeled recently it looks like. But keep up the great videos man, they help with my depression and PTSD. Actually weird enough your video's helped me through a suicide attempt. Be safe man.
