I had never heard of this type of formula car until I found an Assetto Corsa mod lmao. These look awesome, like a shrunken down F4/USF2000 car, or a go kart with actual suspension and big ole wangs on it. Keep this going guys!
As a Formula student electric driver from China, I just want to say thank you for making this video, its awesome, its impressive and amazing to see so many talented drivers out there
You're very welcome :D Please subscribe and share this video!
The Stuttgart one is crazy
Stuttgart is #1, obviously.
Well Stuttgart is the home to mercedes and porsche so it better be
Yessir
Awesome video! I love the rollbar mounted cams that give a clear steady view of both front tires. I have enough open wheel driving experience that watching the front tire scrub patterns gives me a feeling of the G-forces on the driver. As good as sim racing is today, I highly recommend to all youth reading this, you try the real thing.
Our motorsport future is in good hands...
Welp you achieved your goal. I had never heard of Fsae until now
5:25 Lets say it's not his first time doing this.. :D
:D Lots of teams recruit pro racing drivers who happen to be studying courses other then engineering at the same Uni.
Ha! McMinnville Oregon @ 5:27. I drive past this every day. Small world.
Sjajano-very nice-bravoooo
Gracias!
Good memories!
12:06 for future reference
wow! whoever edited this video is talented ;)
thanks snug nug :)
awwwwwww
Cool Video! It'd be nice to know what motors the teams are running that are making the sounds, 4cyl? Twin? etc
Edit: I see now that you have the info for some of them.
Thanks for the note! I'll consider that for next video
In the past, teams have used just about any motorcycle engine imaginable with varying degrees of success. At UT Austin, we ran a CBR600 with and without a supercharger. Several starting buying JDM engines that were smaller displacement for a longer powerband before restriction from the restrictor plate. I think there was a team that ran a Briggs and Stratton on a car that ran FSAE and Mini-Baja.
1:25 thaaaats sound is epic🔥🔥🔥
Sounds like a mini v8 lmao
Team GFR's driver is insane!
bravo !!
Thank you very much!
every uni is doing his Formula SEA meanwhile Stuttgart has a damn formula 1
Yea their car RIPS
I personally likes the blue one with diffusers.
Formula SAE It's of future for F1 before turbo hybrid era xD
7:15 car is so fast he’s the one chasing the cops
police escort ?
nah chasing cops
If I get into college. This is what I would like to do. Or just go to UTI
I'd love to see how these things compare to shifter karts. Oh wait someone said that before me
Shifters are faster, but the top F-SAE don't slow for corners, some designs have downforce from about 35kph up, but the actual top speeds are lucky to hit 100kph.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes It's reasonable if their primary goal is to be as quick as possible in these super small autocross routes. In terms of top speed, shifter karts go up to 170 km/h, which is absolutely mind-blowing for a kart, but it'd be more fair to compare them on something like a kart track. Here in Italy the karting scene is definitely lively, it'd be fun to drive one of those somewhere like Lonato. :)
We actually testet this once and the shifter kart stood no chance. But clearly the wider the corners get and the faster the track the more advantages a kart gains
@@hansmustermann3881 So, shifter kart on a longer, faster track and FSAE on a shorter, more technical one. Reasonable, considering all the downforce elements FSAE have. Thanks for the info
@@marcobrancorsini2479 In the used configuration and setup that's the case. If you start adjusting the setup (especially transmission, aero-package and front suspension geometry) of the FSAE car it is very likely to still be quicker than the shifter kart on faster and wider tracks (we never testet this actually, this is solely speaking from our lap analysis).
I miss the combustion class :( they’re all electric now
¿Y donde está el equipo de Mecsicou? :)
Someone once said that "Britain and the USA are two nationalities separated by a common language"...I can see now what that person meant
Schokolade!!
Whatever that means, thank you!!
Chocolate?? Lol
Jon Powers It's a remix of a Spongebob scene which gets played by german teams very often ;D
Just type in "Schokolade Remix" or something like that
ICH NEHME EINE
god not again.
looks more like a big kart, than formula :D
2:35 reeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
It's be interesting to see how these compare to shifter karts.... My money is on the karts
I think karts are faster as well. Lighter, unrestricted engines, and a lot smaller
Jon Powers yea, these are super cool too tho. I wanna see em go unrestricted... I really wanna get into karts tho lol
You anywhere near toronto? There is a FSAE shootout there this weekend.
Jon Powers sadly I am not, I will definitely see these in person at some point tho. I assume they'll come near the Charlotte area at some point as its a very large city.
"unrestricted engines"...dude....almost every kart class is restricted to 125cc 2-stroke engines with around 40hp (except superkart)
FSAE cars have up to double the power of the highest shifter kart class plus proper suspension setup (which actually makes a HUGE difference in how much grip you can get out of your tire). Bigger and better tires. Plus aero. Plus stiffer chassis etc etc
There is absolutely no way a shifter kart is faster than FSAE. Otherwise the teams would just build a go-kart and win
Would of liked to see TU Yıldız from Turkey.
What causes the whining noise in the electric cars? Awesome video btw
Most often the gearbox.
Not exactly gearbox. When you turn on transformer you can hear o low frequency "bmmmmm" this is the same phenomenom.
I wanna play.
Let’s see a lap time a thunder hill or Laguna Seca or buttonwillow
Ngl I think if u traded the massive rear wing on the back for a better diffuser and maybe some ground effects it would produce close to the same or more downforce on the car with the added benefit of less drag from ur wing
You're not wrong....but its suuuper hard to get the diffuser right on these cars. It's insanely sensitive to ride height which is dynamic.
Berkeley! Running without an impact attenuator is unsafe and shooting a video without it could have you disqualified to all FSAE events!
that rule got removed. They couldn't control every team anyway.
Ohh... I see. I think they should have kept it.
If they could get these to create more download like F2 F3 cars and not be so jumpy like a go kart would be another level. It would make set up way more important and better racing.
Some of the teams do achieve this. However you're limited by the track width and wheelbase requirements.
To Bedlam, shove it !
Stuttgarts entry is the best
Not trying to discredit the teams here or the drivers but MAN those cars looked like they were under steering like crazy
That’s what happens when you have room for an enormous wing at the rear and hardly anything comparatively at the front :/
Understeer is the safest way to setup a car and safest way to learn the limits, oversteer on these engines result in a spin out because of how fast the engine Rev to limiter.
Idk about fastest cars and most talented drivers but it’s still really cool
You ever personally meet any of the driver?
@@JonPowersDrives you don’t need to meet a driver to compare them to the best in the world lol.
@@patchess5488 Then you must not be meeting the best FSAE drivers because a lot of them could compete with the best in the world. I knew the best and they were the real deal
@@JonPowersDrives from the video we just watched where the guy said some of the best in the world, there were very few I would say look like they would make it in something like F1 and once there they certainly don’t look like they would compete with the best.
@7:47 say what you want.. Every girls loves race cars!
Awesome. Sadly, that electric whining is a torture to my ears. Truly
First!
OMG THIS IS STILL A THING?
Karting for f1
WTF is with fuzzing out the speedometers?
they developed the engine together with AMG and arent allowed to give any engine parameters like the rev counter.
formula go kart
I have been searching for footage of an old FSAE car, I believe from University of Wisconsin in the early 2000s. It's engine was a hybrid 500cc V8 built from two 250cc 4cylinders, which turned over 20,000rpm. Does anyone have any footage of this car? It didn't perform very well. I was told it DNF'd on two events. I would love to hear the engine.
Send it over if you find it! I've been thinking of doing a pure sound 2 before all the cars become electric :)
@Chris Jones - awesome ! Any resources?
@Chris Jones - I remember it having a load of innovation, R&D. It didn't perform well, and was wrought with gremlins... but I loved the concepts. That was a huge undertaking for an SAE team to even have it run well enough to show up... much less, compete.
@Chris Jones - I don't doubt it. The engineering of that car, was far more than the sum of its parts.
Current mechanical engineering student at UW Madison (assuming that's the UW you're referring to). I'm on the baja team but have some friends on formula and can ask around to see if anyone knows anything. If it was here I'm sure they'll have footage somewhere. Do you have any more information on it or is that all you know?
_traction_
Hey Jon....not the second time you didn't...check it yourself. And I wasn't being negative. Just trying to make you realise that, in life, small inaccuracies can detract from what are real quality items.
what car was the last one? (crash)
I'm not sure, it was some russian team
k, thx anyway
Makes video about sounds of fsae cars, picks a bunch of single cylinder and ev cars........
Are you really complaining? Really dude?
Hahahaha These Little Tiny goofy Cars Look so ridiculous
Of course I fast forwarded the electric cars. EV is the death knell of motorsports. It matters not that they’re sometimes faster. They are boring.
I'm sorry Robert but I have to disagree with you about that. In fact, EVs are the evolution of motorsports. Combustion motors will always have a special place in all of our hearts, but unfortunately the KW/Kg of an electric motor cannot be matched by a combustion motors.
Combustion motors resonate with our souls - literally with the resonant frequency of our cells. But I'll ask - have you ever driven a model S Plaid? Because it is the opposite of boring.
Additionally, with 67% less powertrain components, electric powertrains are much more reliable than combustion, opening up more sustainable motorsports operations for individuals without a huge operating budget.
@@JonPowersDrives no heel and toe gear changes. No blipping on the downshift. No aural heaven. All computer controlled. Totally boring. Going fast(est) is certainly a motorsport goal. But when it’s meaningless, then that’s the end. The human machine interface is THE most important aspect of the spirit of racing . Remove that and you remove the passion. As someone who has road raced motorcycles at national level, I have the experience to make the point. Gear less go karts are the starting point for racing drivers. Not the end point. When formula E started. I watched it for nearly two laps (even that was a struggle). Then I turned it off. The goal of EV’s is autonomous operation. So watching unattended white goods will not be a priority or passion for people. I’m glad to have seen GroupB rally. Not the fastest, but the greatest rally era. The v12 and v10 formula 1. World Superbike from the start and through to the mid 2000’s was awesome. 500cc Grand Prix motorcycles. World Speedway. Motorcycle trials. Not one of the above will EVER be equaled by EV’s. Enjoy the downfall of Motorsport. 🏍💨😜😃
no racing car vs car on track - no fun.. at least for me
Fuck i cant stop laughin this is beyond goofy… hell is this is so weird
First off, if you want to include pure sound, electric vehicles do not work. One is a perfectly acceptable demonstration of how engines sound better.
My general issues with FSAE is that they don't encourage racing. The tracks are too narrow and limited, which helps with building them from parking lots, which schools have a lot of. Small tracks also mean less safety equipment. Still, it seems to heavily limit the racing aspect that other formulas encourage. It'd be cool to see FSAE hold full races on bigger, wider tracks, see what the cars can do when not constrained by the limits of cones on a skid pad.
Also, they don't seem to allow two-stroke power plants. That's a major strike against in my book.
Well I think the electric engines sound just fine, so do 792 other people. Additionally, a lot of the electric vehicles are more powerful and faster than the combustion vehicles.
You realize this is an organization for college students? Do you really think FSAE international wants to risk students dying with wheel to wheel racing?
I fully encourage FSAE in every way, as it is the reason most team members receive the prestigious job offers they do.
and two-strokes?!?! yea that would be cool but its 2018 dude. Emissions is everything in racing now days in ANY racing series. Everything will be electric soon.
I've gone through a few major wall of text revisions as to a response, but my simple thoughts are this. It's a difference in personal taste. I understand on a rough basis why Formula SAE runs their events the way they do. Safety and logistical concerns, for the most part. I still think the cars and development of said cars are cool, and I would really like to see a non-collegiate event on a properly selected full-size track with a more direct racing format. Either it would be exciting as anything, or would prove that the cars are better suited to what they usually do, and give me a reason to shut up.
Stark Raven that would definitely be awesome
"Fastest" title card,... he he he.
What was that top speed rule - no more then 100kph, 120kph,.? IIRC, they're the fastest vs engine capacity, everything faster has bigger motors.
Mind you, not having to slow down for the corners is where they really shine.
americans trying to make a car faster than f1
This is just a B class Formula M that we race in RSA. Built in a garage without any fancy CAD. Just years of knowledge. Also that rear wing is just overkill.
It's not
Fsae’s formal tracks are vry tight so average speeds are generally below 40mph. To generate enough downforce the rear wings need to be huge
Crippled F1 racer
3:38 - that has got to be the worst handling car or worst driving I've seen in a long time... Way too much steering input into the corner with massive understeer, followed by the car either beginning to oversteer like crazy or holding the understeer before a big flick over oversteer before the outside clipping point. For an aero car to look like it has less grip and handles worse than a go-kart is some impressive backwards work or some impressively bad driving.
Funny you say that considering they were one of the fastest cars in the world lol
@@JonPowersDrives Doesn't matter if it's the fastest car to ever exist... it could still be a lot faster if they actual get it to handle properly or get someone who knows how to drive it (depending on what the issue is)
@@ryanokeefe12 By fast I meant around the track fast. Which means it did indeed handle properly. Straight line wise, that car is a single cylinder so there are FSAE cars way faster. Trust me it handled properly
@@JonPowersDrives As I said, it may have been "fast" around the track in lap time.. but it could have had an even better lap time if the car handled better.
It could just be a low grip test track, it’s not always the car or the driver. Compared to the other clips though it was very loose but as long as he was carrying speed sometimes that’s faster in some cars. (I have no clue about these cars I just like to drive)
I remember when SAE didnt have electric motors. Should still be banned.
Perpetual Student but why?
cool but slower than go karts soo...
I'd imagine if the they didn't have restrictor plates on those cars they'd go a lot faster but it's for safety reasons gotta have em or you can't participate
If this course, spoilers do not need!
Speed is too slow.
2000 Teiki you absolutely need aerodynamics in formula SAE to be highly competitive
+Jon Powers
However, this course does not require aerodynamics!
2000 Teiki this course? There were dozens of courses in this video and some of them requires aerodynamics without a doubt.
+Jon Powers
You only need to prepare for courses that require aerodynamics! But the reality of this video course is that it does not require aerodynamics.
As I am not an Esper, I can not understand the courses that are not reflected.
2000 Teiki this video is 20 minutes long? There are some course in this video that, 100% without a doubt, require aerodynamics...
Great...but you should learn to spell....... "discpline" ?. Really ?
Kenneth McAnally I spelled discipline right.....you should learn to stop nit picking
Not the second time on the video you didn't...hope you check your products better than you do your use of the English language :)
Dude no one cares. You're not impressing anyone with your basic observation.
Kenneth McAnally WTF is your problem? They seem pretty talented to me regardless. Like you could do any of this stuff... 😂
.....I HATE sped up video.
If these are "some of the fastest" then I guess my F4 team and I are doing something wrong lol
