Worst thing about living in North Wales .. every ride is super hilly and tough, best thing about living in North Wales... Every ride to super hilly and tough.
I love living in North Wales!

I was on that street in Harlech! The year was 1981, and I was on my epic 3-month-long walkabout which I took on my bike in France and the British Isles. I didn’t know at all that it was the steepest street. And I had panniers and a handlebar bag with all of my possessions. I was climbing and resting alternately. I didn’t make it to the top, not because I wasn’t able but because I met some people who were so intrigued with such a weird foreigner wearing a “crash helmet” while riding a “push bike,” and they invited me to visit them. (In 1981, bike helmets were new and not in widespread use.) I accepted and turned back down the hill and never made it to visit Harlech Castle. There was a college there (which is no longer there) for adults needing a second chance, and I stayed overnight and sang at a large-ish sing-along party. It’s a long-lasting memory. Now I have dreams of going back and seeing if I can make it up the hill. I bet I could, one way or another.
North Wales is a magical place, the one I enjoyed the most on that trip.

I'm definitely enjoying this video series. Lots of inspiration for future trips. I did a ride from Barmouth up the estuary to Dolgellau and then around the bottom of Cader Idris past Cregennan Lakes last time I was there which was epic by my standards. Definitely want to get up to Bala this summer.

There’s some mega climbs in North Wales, Stwlan dam, Pen-Y-Pass, Marchlyn Mawr, Llanddona hill, Harlech, Crimea Pass… that’s just off the top of my head, there’s loads.

What did you miss ? Well, in spite of being on gravel bikes, you stayed on tarmac all the time ! One of my favourite routes (and I'm biased, I live here) is heading from Ruthin up to Llyn Brenig. Minor lanes, forestry tracks, and a whopping big lake at the top, with a good cafe !

Did a great cycle tour last September starting on the Wirral along the fabulous coastal path to Conway; through Snowdonia to Machynlleth; round coast to Aberystwyth; across to Rhayader via Elan valley, and back up via Newtown and Shrewsbury. Loads of great roads and scenery.

Bad ass dude! Welcome to North Wales! You visited some of the best sites!.
    1. Ynys Môn has some awsome roads although very flat. Why not cycle around the island.
    2. Llandudno's Gogarth is a very good loop.
    3. Llanberis climb or decent Pen y Pass.
    4. Old Roman Road from Bethesda to Llyn Ogwen.
Next time give them a go!

Proud Gog (North Walian) here. There is fantastic riding throughout the area, but it especially caters for really punchy riders due to the amount of short but very steep climbs littered around. There are some great ones heading up out of the Vale of Clwyd in the North East, if you base yourself in Ruthin or nearby. These include Bwlch Penbarras, Moel Arthur and The Shelf which are all in Simon Warren's 100 Climbs. There is also an absolutely savage one which less people know about called Allt Gwaenysgor coming out of Prestatyn which reaches 33%. Amazing view over the sea from the car park at the top. The climb up Ty Gwyn Road to the top of the Great Orme in Llandudno was used as a summit finish in Tour of Britain, Van Aert beat Alaphilippe up there. Marine Drive around the Great Orme is also stunning.
If these are a bit too savage, stick to the main valley roads in Snowdonia, where you will still need to climb but gradients aren't too threatening. The climb up from Beddgelert to Pen Y Pass is so beautiful and even better as a descent looking over Llyn Gwynant.

Hellfire pass connects Tegid and Vyrnwy, a loop that's been on my Rhayader for quite some time. North wales can be divided up into so many sections that it's hard to feature them all. The Tyfi coast road and Neigwl bay are two big misses from this video. Great work as always, remember mid and south wales exist as well.
My list of climbs to do in Wales are the Devil's Elbow, Devil's Staircase, Hellfire Pass, Gospel Pass, Y Tymbl, and the Cowlyd. I believe the highest is the easiest.

    • @therider4909
      @therider4909 Рік тому +2

Bwlch Y Groes (Hellfire pass) is the toughest ascent and goes from Dinas Mawddwy on the south side. From the top you can turn off down to Lake Vyrnwy or go straight on down Cwm Cynllwyd to Llyn Tegid. The Hirnant pass, from the North end of Lake Vyrnwy, is the other way over to Bala so you could do a loop climbing one and descending the other (and throw in a lap of Lake Vyrnwy if you wish, it's completely flat). The back road from Bala north west to Ffestiniog is a stunner and has very little traffic.
But there's more to North Wales than Eryri / Snowdonia. Nearby Anglesey and the Llŷn peninsula are much less hilly and have good roads with terrific views. The Tour de Môn sportive takes place on Anglesey each year and if you've watched the Tour of Britain in recent years you will have seen that a lap of the Great Orme at Llandudno is great too. There are so many lovely routes in North Wales to list but many of the ones in Snowdonia are far too busy in summer to be truly enjoyable on a bike.

Man I really wish I was fit enough for this sort of thing! Love the country, and were I hiking with a rucksack I'd have no problems, but at 115kg, two wheels make me look a total washout!
For reference, I recently attempted two local climbs to me (Bristol), the first being Backwell Hill road, the second being Belmont Hill. The first is 2.72km long and 150m climb - with the worst of it about 20% or so. The second is 1.37km long and 110m climb, with the worst of it more like 17-18% as I recall.
Backwell totally stopped me dead. Keeled over the handlebars and had to wait a good 5 minutes before cracking on with the second half. Belmont I managed, but I was in the lowest gears I had and pretty knackered by the top!
Perhaps one day I'll have the fitness and strength to ride some of these magnificent and picturesque climbs, but they're a total fantasy for me right now!

The only thing that's gone downhill is the road surface quality and that does drop the ranking from very good to very average. If the govt gets the road surfaces sorted then more people might consider cycling.
