This was such a lovely and inspiring video, Eileen. Yes, we are all given a script of how we think our lives should be, but it is important not to have regrets. I always think it is never too late to reach for your passions. I changed careers when I was 42. I went back to college and received a teaching certificate. I taught fourth grade for 20 years. I took a dramatic pay cut, but teaching is such a noble profession. I have recently retired and I am now enjoying taking care of my grandsons a few times per week. I am seeking out what other activities I want to pursue at this time. I have no regrets with the path I took. You should consider writing and illustrating children's books.
I really like that you look back at life and can reflect on the positive and negative aspect of it. And that you learn from your past to live in harmony with your future. Peace and joy is priceless.
Life changes as we age (I turn 65 next month). Society was a completely different world 50 years ago, when the only portable phone was a CB radio. The best advice I would give myself if I could go back, would be to stay out of relationships and invest in good companies instead, which is what I do, today (left professional nursing 17 years ago, and never looked back). Thank You for sharing your story Eileen; your how-to series is refreshingly inspiring in today's hectic and shallow world. P.S. My intuition says you have an amazing talent for writing and illustrating books for young audiences, especially girls.
Thank you Eileen for sharing your journey: it’s so relatable and inspiring. On my side, I was forced to quit what I thought was a successful job and bore a lot of frustration and resentment for a long time until I also realised I was “following the script” of the perfect success life written by the society. It took me several years and the death of a loved one to “wake up” and realise that we only have one life and it’s what is happening now shaped by the perspective I decide to have on it. I accepted that “everything was exactly as it was supposed to be” to teach me what I needed to know to be closer to my self and my needs, rather than keeping running in my hamster’s wheel until I die, being overly stressed and busy, never having any time to connect with myself. Wishing you all the best for your future projects.
Your illustration is very powerful! As a creative person I really needed to hear this message! I really believe in balance and you have explained this beautifully! I am going to come back to this video when I need a reminder to keep pursuing my dreams while using the tools that I've been given to obtain them!
I took a mid career switch from being in financial sector to healthcare industry. Right now, as a student again to pursue this healthcare journey, as an adult learner it isn’t easy but I enjoyed this journey, because I believe I only live once so I will try my best. Most people wouldn’t switch their career mid life to pursue another and start from scratch but who’s to judge me. I don’t want to regret not doing what I want even if this switch doesn’t pay as well as my previous job. It is a passion for me. 😊
I love your illustrations, I think you could totally do them as a business, they are wonderful! I used to work for a man who had gone into the military straight out of high school, worked as a medic, traveled the world, met his wife, had 2 kids--and after 30 years he decided to retire. After retirement he went to college, got a degree in art and started a whole new career! So it can be done. He had great stories from his first career, but he also loved his second career. I think it's terrible that as teens we are forced to make life changing decisions and that it's drilled into our heads that it has to be our career for all eternity. I've been fortunate to have worked in many different fields over the years of my work life, and now that I'm not working, I'm pursuing other interests. 5 years ago I decided to take guitar lessons (I already had years of musical training previously) and now I am part of a duo that performs, it's so much fun. However, if we hadn't made some serious financial choices, I probably wouldn't have the time because I'd be working instead.
I feel so similarly to you. I loved all those creative pursuits as a child but was told there’s no way I could ever make a living from it. I’m 27 now and have been trying to shift to a creative life for the past couple years. I have a low stress job that pays my bills, and I have a UA-cam channel about fashion and thrifting that I really enjoy making content for. It doesn’t make me any money but one day it might. It’s more for me to stop being afraid of pursuing my passions and to do what I love in life even if I have to work a job to survive.
Thank you for your videos. I have been asking myself this question for many years but never had the courage to follow my dreams. I finally decided to make steps towards changing my life. I appreciate seeing for your videos for encouragement! ❤
Thank you Eileen for sharing such an inspiring video.. like most I followed a scripted version of life however I have no regrets as I’ve always believed we are where we meant to be at that time.. with that being said your previous video was light bulb moment for me as I had been planning to retire early and put money away more than before so that we’re comfortable when the time comes to retire. My passion has always been cooking and I hope I can make something of my passion one day..
I have been able to do my dream job that I love, which is a translator. So I'm not doing something that I don't want to do just for the money. I am a Japanese living in Japan, but because I grew up in western countries where I have become fluent in English, I have always dreamed of becoming a translator by making use of my bilingual language skills. Particularly, since Covid, I have been able to work mostly at home, and I only need to go to the office once or twice a week. Therefore, I enjoy more freedom both physically and mentally. Because I love my job, I don't think of it as a duty I have to do, rather, I enjoy it like a hobby. I learn new things every day, and I find it interesting and enjoyable. My salary is pretty good too, it is about as much as an average lawyer would make here in Japan. So I am very satisfied and happy with my day job. I would miss it if it was taken away from me.
Wow I love your illustrations. It’s incredible seeing you follow your passion and the freedom which comes from it. Thank you for your videos they’re so inspirational. Looking forward to your next one.
Dear Eileen, thank you for sharing your words of wisdom! I am a pharmacist by profession however I prefer to do sports and dancing and I discovered this passion since I was 18 years old. I have decided early on that working parttime and thus having time for my family and for dancing works best for me and for my happiness although of course this also means less income. I love seeing your shiny things video's as well but I have to keep my budget in mind. I would love to learn more about investing as well! Have a nice day ❤
I am an orthodontist in Singapore - in my late 40s. I think you are burned out, and I think the clinics that you were working previously were not a good fit for you. I had similar experience about 10plus years ago - I was working in a government dental hospital, just had 2 kids and I felt that I was trapped, not being able to be a good clinician nor a good mother. I left the public sector and went to a clinic in a suburban area, cut down my working hours to just four afternoons a week. Since then I had another kid ( three girls in total! They are my pride and joy), I enjoy working much more ( I spend 100% of my working hours treating patients with braces or Invisalign, which is what I enjoy doing, not endless administrative work or attending meetings or doing "research projects" that has no clinical values). It is very satisfying to transform smiles and change lives - and I am very glad that I can do that for all my patients. (Side note - Technology in dentistry is changing so fast nowadays - even if you are taking a break, do keep up or else it would be very difficult for you to return to the profession in the future! )
Hi Anna, thank you so much for sharing! I'm so happy that you're enjoying the job. In the UL dentistry is very heavily regulated in every possible way. At times it actually feels a bit beyond me, even though the satisfaction from helping people is huge. Several of my colleagues feel the same too, but it's part of the package I guess. To be honest, I do miss certain parts of the job but I think I needed this break to recover from the burnout, before I decide what to do next. So far it's been great for our family xx
Hi Eileen. You painted an ideal world where there is endless happiness and carefree. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Had you worked in a healthier dental environment and not feeling burnt out do you think that you would still think of being a minimalist and take a break in your career? Life is always evolving and happiness is not permanent, and have to be worked on continuously. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Definitely valid points! Like I mentioned in the video, I’m by no means trying to romanticise anything. My professional job has given me a level of security that now allows me to take a break and explore- something I’ll always be thankful for. Grass is definitely not greener on the other side (I’m still not always peace and zen even now lol). My hope is that through a bit of some soul searching, I can connect with that little girl whom i had lost touch with for years, and do things I hadn’t had much time to do😊
As long as you are in good health nothing is not possible to pursue. Without good health, nothing really matters in life. Be blessed to be able to wake up each day and appreciate the things that you already have in your life. That’s happiness for me😊. I look forward to seeing you evolve and realize your creative passion. Have a nice day.
I went to a Chinese school for 6 years so it wasn't too challenging to learn the language. But now that my little boy is learning it as a second language, I can see it's a bit tricky to pick up xx

Eileen have you considered Animated Voice Over (Acting)? Animating your own book maybe? Thoroughly Enjoyed!!!💛✨️
Aww you're too sweet! To be honest, I sometimes wish my voice was a bit bigger and more prominent. Many people said I'm a bit too soft spoken xx
