- This program originally aired on Religion & Ethics Newsweekly on Oct. 28, 2004. Zoroastrianism began in ancient Persia, now Iran, and left its historical imprint on Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Estimates vary widely, but some claim that as few as 115,000 Zoroastrians remain-a few in Europe, North America and Iran; the vast majority in India, where they are called Parsis. Fred De Sam Lazaro reported on Zoroastrianism from Bombay.

Sin is universal problem. Sin is ubiquitous. Humanity contaminated by sin. Sin in us by default, not learnt, not taught. Sin manifests in many forms - evil, crime. Sin is the opium. The origin of sin is unanswered.
My journey.
Sin is pre-existing in all. Nobody taught us to sin. Sin pre-dates The Bible. The Bible explains origins of sin. The Bible provides remedy for pre-existing sin, through Jesus Christ death and resurrection. The Bible is best selling book in the world for this reason. Sin is real, The Bible is relevant. Sin is born at every child birth. Sin is disease of heart, and Jesus Christ is the cure.
Satan is the enemy, came to steal, kill and destroy. Misleads us to blame good loving God. God is not the author of evil.
Media, Police, Defense, Judiciary, Penitentiary, Security, Contracts confirm sin exists.
The origins of life, natural laws, sin, morals, purpose, meaning, conscience, music, creativity, intelligence, beauty, color, nature, water, air, light and amalgamation, remain unevidenced - elsewhere.
We love truth when it enlightens us, but hate when it convicts us.
Instructing to "Heart wash" from sin is not "Brainwash".
God created universe, placed natural laws, made humans in His image, gave talents, instructed to multiply and explore - The Initiation of Science. Science is the legitimate child of natural laws. Without natural laws science has no foundation.
We are created with good purpose and meaning. We are good. Then sin entered through satan and we all fallen. Disease, despair, deformities, deficiencies, depression, stress, guilt, greed, hate, anger, rebellious spirit, spiritual death entered. Sin plays spoilsport.
Unloose the Soul from the tight knot of sin. Soul outlasts death.
Sinners cannot save themselves from sin. Jesus Christ, the Holy God, intervened, willingly died on The Cross and resurrected, for remmissions of our sins, to save us from sin and hell.
We are weak at the core, however we try to portray otherwise. We need Holy God's help, who is willing to help with open arms.
Unable to find any motive any reason for Jesus Christ to die willingly on Cross and resurrect - except His love to save us from pre-existing sin and hell.
Nobody died for our sins and resurrected - except Jesus Christ. Exclusivity
Jesus Christ claimed:
"I am The Way, The Truth and The Life". "I am The Resurrection and The Life".
"I am The Good Shepherd".
Jesus Christ has the authority to forgive sins.
Religion says "Do". Jesus Christ says "Done".
Religion is man's attempts to 'search gods'. Jesus Christ came from heaven in 'search of man'.
Salvation from sin and hell is not earned through works or deeds or pilgrimages or rituals or ceremonies or traditions or cultures or meditations or public displays or hypocrisy or making personal sacrifices or making animal sacrifices.
Salvation from sin and hell is free, but not cheap. Because Jesus Christ laid His life on The Cross, and resurrected.
God loves the sinner, but hates the sin. Just like a parent loves child, but hates disease in child.
We are saved by God's grace, not by our works.
Karma is getting what we deserve. Grace is getting what we don't deserve. Only Grace can be pre-fixed with word Amazing. Amazing Grace. Karma is not Amazing, it is depressing.
GRACE: Getting what we don't deserve - i.e. forgiveness of sin, eternity in heaven through Jesus Christ.
MERCY: Not getting what we deserve - i.e. punishment of sin, separation from God, eternity in hell.
Other side of death is eternity. Either in hell; or in heaven through Jesus Christ.
God offers grace and mercy for free through Jesus Christ death and resurrection.
Jesus Christ suffered, ridiculed, spat-on, humiliated, crucified on The Cross, and therefore He understands our pain. He raised victorious, we will too. Those who endure till end are victorious.
Jesus Christ coming again to judge all. The doors will be closed. Jesus Christ reveals every mystery, answers every question. We all deserve to know the truth. He is The Alpha and The Omega. He judges everyone.
One day every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The First Christmas - Jesus Christ came to earth from heaven to save us from pre-existing sin.
The First Good Friday - Jesus Christ crucified to The Cross, died willingly for remission of our sins.
The First Resurrection Day, also linked to Easter - Jesus Christ resurrected from death.
Jesus Christ made entry to Holy Heaven free through Him. Repent of sin and be saved. Easy.
The First Coming of Jesus Christ - He is Lamb, slaughtered for remission of sins
to save us from sin and hell. And resurrected.
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ - He will be Lion, The Judge.
The Lamb and The Lion.
Jesus Christ forgave all who crucified Him, and now forgives all, even who reject, ridicule and mock Him. He loves all unconditionally.
Believe, trust, repent of pre-existing sin in Jesus Christ that He died for remission of our sins and resurrected, and coming back to judge, accept Him as Lord and Saviour, and be saved from sin and hell. Any time, any where. Even now. Simple.
Nothing to lose, everything to gain.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
I found God loved me regardless of sins, weaknesses and rejections by others. As sinner I cannot save myself through deeds. He believed me and has faith in me. I am not in competition with others. God loves you all, individually.

@@mermaidalone7826 not truly persians. Because of revolutions in history true Persians are extinct from their traditions and culture. U may carry Persian DNA. But not their heritage as most of the true persians who followed zoroastrianism were killed during the 8th century. Only some survived and managed to save their religion as they were welcomed by the prince of gujarat. And they maintained a good relationship with indians. In the 10 century. They got a new name as parsi and was declared as a part of Indian community following Indian tradition and becoming a historical part of India. But in modern world they are not persians anymore apart from their ancestral roots. They call themselves as Indians and hate Iranians and they are little awkward towards muslims as i knw one of my friends as he says that muslims were the reason why their ancestral heritage was destroyed in persia. As most of the zoroastrians were persecuted by the Muslims. And cause of that they hate iran. And the people as they think that your ancestors tried destroy their religion. Persia was historically located in Iran and was a community which got extinct. I am sorry for saying this. But its true.

I somehow agree with you that maybe we have just Persian DNA, as Arabs invaded Iran and Persians.But still we have about 25000 Zoroastrians in Iran most of them in Yazd Province(the birthplace of Zoroastrian religion) , maybe those are still pure Persians and as I ve heard they also stay away from muslims. But believe me most of Iranians is for so long that they hate Islam and they try to back to their root. Many of them also remove all words with arabic root from their language. I and my family converted to the religion of our zoroastrian faith, my ancestors used to be Zoroastrian, until the ISIS of its day forced them to convert to islam, nothing that this Mistry fellow says about not allowing us to become Zoroastrians will stop this. He and a small minority of Parsis will die out, hopefully sooner rather than later, allowing the Universal religion that Zoroaster preached to open its arms to ALL the people who want to drink from the well of knowledge.

Iranian Zoroastrians allow conversion from outside.
I think perhaps over time Indian Zoroastrians developed some customs from the religions around them, or maybe got more protective of blood lines due to persecution.
I think people who flee persecution become very protective of their religion and culture and resist any sort of "dilution".

Another praiseworthy quality of this community is modesty.

Humble, hard working & honest , Zoroastrians have serenity & refined manners , even in moments of crisis.
And of course, their quirky sense of humour. Unlike most Indians, they never mind if a joke is upon them .
They like to laugh at themselves.
No grudges with anyone.
No wonder Zoroastrians are beloved by Marathis and Gujaratis.

No, Parsi people put religion before their great country Iran(Persia) and ran away to India. The real Persians stayed in Persia and fought Muslims like warriors. Islam is apart of Persian identity, Parsis are Indian and have lived in India for thousands of years and don't speak Persian.
Half born Parsis should continue practicing Zoroastrianism despite of their community norms. Build a separate Parsi community. Build your own fire temple if your grandparents aren't letting you in theirs. Without an expansionist mindset, you guys can never grow. Maybe take a lesson from the ones who drove you out from Iran.

As far I am informed the founder of this beautiful faith Zarathushtra
was born in todays Afghanistan and has now almost no followers in
Afghanstan at all and a very small number in Iran. I do not know if it
written or not in the holy Avesta that Farsi (zoroastrier) must be born
as Farsi.? we are witnessing that the number of Farsi followers in the
world is decreasing from year to year. I do not know if in Germany or in
Europe there are some Zoroastrier or not. In India but there is a new
religion the Bahai faith which has its origin from Iran and has many
Iranian and Afghan followers in India too. According to my information
these two religions the Farsi and the Bahai religions have many things in
common like the Now Roz (New year) There are millions of Bahais in India. My question is why the Farsis do not
join the Bahais and work together as they have many things in common and also
the same cultrue? from my point of view this will help the Farsi

A great community. I am from Kolkata. And here also they have a bit population present. fortunately I got connected with few Persis sometimes related to my work as well as Through casual chatting. I would tell they are the one of well behaved peoples on earth. And in point of the religious connection I also have found a major commonality with the Hinduism. I am a Hindu Brahmin & believe in spirituality from early age. I have found lots of common term with my religion like "Gatha". It bears the exact meaning in Hinduism too. And forming our country's socioeconomic structure after independence they have a huge contribution if I keep in the mind about the population demographics. Hats off for that. I would love to visit the fire temple in Iran soon or later . "But i will argue at a point a bit regarding the intercaste marriage. Since the population growth % is so low & overall population accorss the world, I can't consider them even minorities. It's a kind of an oldest religion on earth under extinction. I assume if a parsi man weds a woman from different religions the offsprings should be considered as "parsi". Then if a parsi woman weds a man from other religion why offsprings will not be considered as "parsi" ? Afterall probably our generation is the most advance generation ever lived on earth & we are so well advanced now in biosciences !!" - my quoted section is just my personal view. Its far from agreed that Zoroaster lived in at least 1500 B.C., younger and older dates have been suggested. James Orr says:
Zoroaster's prince Vishtaspa (in Greek Hustaspes) bears the same name as the father of Darius I, and was probably the same person. Vishtaspa's queen Hutaosa, who also protected and favored Zoroaster, bears the same name (in Greek Atossa) as Cambyses' sister who afterward married Darius, and probably belonged to the same family. Zoroastrianism comes to the fore under Darius, whereas Cyrus in his inscriptions speaks as a decided polytheist. Hence, we conclude that the earliest part of the Avesta belongs to circa 550 BC.

Herodotus makes no mention of Zoroaster, but speaks of the Magi (whom he calls a Median tribe (i.101)) as already performing priestly functions. His description of their repetition of charms and theological compositions (i.132) would agree very well with recitation of the Gathas and Yasna. Mention of controversies with Gautama, Buddha's disciples (Yasht XIII, 16) who probably reached Persia in the 2nd century BC, is another indication of date. The fact that in both the Yasna and the Vendidad heretics (zanda) are mentioned who preferred the commentary (zand) on the Avesta to the Avesta itself, is a sign of late date.

Well i see some similarities between zoroastrianism and hinduism. In zoroastrianism there is the prophet zoroaster whose actual name was zarathustra. Similarly we have linguistic similarities , such as in farsi language fifth is called panjom and in sanskrit it is pancham. Interesting.

I support 100 peecent their right and point in being separated, its a good idea today, but, if they dont recruit some more folks in eventually then the low numbers will act as a negative on their community, their offspring. Eventually someone has to marry someone outside of the community, and there are plenty people of the same blood background to choose from if they want to keep their heritage pure. Actually paris are ancient hindus. They follow very early vedic hinduism.
