Rosered Homestead on UA-cam did a very good test on several electric canners, using a probe that measures the temps inside the jar of food to make sure the canners were producing high enough temps for the food being processed was in the kill zone for the amount of time required. The Nesco 9.5 qt. Passed this test. I would trust it. The lady testing the canner is a professor as well and follows canning procedures safely.
Hi Colleen, I’m 72 yr’s old & watching you cook reminds me of my Aunts & Nana when I’d watch them cook , I grew up in a 3 family home in Brooklyn,NY all family, I know we’re miles apart but it seems we were cut from the same cloth some how, same recipes, same methods, I truly enjoy your videos so much it truly brings me back. Thank you
I just found your videos, and I do enjoy them! We seniors have got to stick together so we can lead the younger sisters in canning! I am looking for meals in a jar mostly, because I live alone and do not like cooking for only myself unless it is in big canning batches! I really enjoy your recipes, please keep them coming!
On RoseRed homestead the owner has proven the Nesco Carey canner is safe for canning at high pressure using a data logger. After seeing this I bought the digital canner and that’s why I am watching your channel ❤
I canned this soup last year and it's delicious! Fall and Winter are just around the corner, so I'm canning it again. It was such a hit, I'm canning twice as much this year. Thank you Colleen.
The butter stick I'm currently using is on the counter, while the rest of the butter is in the refrigerator or freezer. Love these recipes!! I'm loving your measuring spoons!!! They are beautiful!
Hello! I have been home sick with covid after managing to avoid it for so long and just discovered your channel. Been watching you for hours and your home cooking is making me feel better! I am 70 years young and can relate to all of your cooking tips and techniques as that's how my Nana cooked for us growing upm she loved kitchen tools/gadgets and I have all of them and use all of them! Thank you!
@kylehiggins3216 OH no, sorry to hear about the covid, it can certainly be a awful. We are of the same era it seems as I will be 70 on my next birthday. I love anything that makes life easier for me. Thanks for watching! Colleen
Thank you so much for sharing this delicious recipe and canning method, I felt like I was a beloved guest in your home 🏡 I am new to canning and was surprised and discouraged by the discovery of the so called "Canning nazis". I prefer the recipes, methods, and "can"-do attitudes 😊 of people like yourself. I can't wait to try this, I hope you keep making more videos. Bless you!

Thank you for your wonderful videos. We live in the White Mountain area of Arizona, elevation 5,660 feet. So it is very important that any low acid food we can must be processed at 15 pounds. I was so excited to see the Necso Small Batch canner would reach 15 pounds. Please keep posting your videos, they are greatly appreciated. Blessings
Hello Jeanette, I was so excited to see one that would reach 15 pounds as well! Give us high altitude canners an option we didn't have before.Cheers, Colleen
I like onion in my soups. I use the tomato paste and chicken broth. I had HomeEc in high school and keep butter on the counter. So much alike in so many ways. 😊Kansas, USA
I love the tomato paste in a tube. I always struggled with that to do with the remainder of the can when almost every recipe calls for only a couple of tablespoons of paste.
Hello Darlene, I thought it genius as well! I still have some of the small cans for big recipes but for everyday cooking I love the tube. Cheers, Colleen
I wish people would stop saying it is not approved. They DO NOT test or approve canners, they have a list of standards/guidelines of safety features that a canner should have. Love your videos.
Hello Mark, Thanks so much for following along. When I first started sharing Nesco canning recipes I had several people tell me they were glad they were not members of my family because they thought I would kill them. I always felt that a company would not release a product for large markets if they hadn't tested it for after. Almost two years into using the canner Rose Red Homestead, a scientist, did her own independent testing of the canner proving it reaches the temperatures and pressure needed for safe canning. I am happy that you are enjoying following along. Best wishes, Colleen
I realize you did this one a while back but you said the magic words - vegetable beef soup and biscuits - plus I need to gain confidence in using my Nesco Smart Canner -- I really want to get at least two dozen jars of various soups and stews on the shelf for the winter - I live alone and a pint will make 2 meals for me. I will be watching more of your videos to gain that confidence.
I discovered your videos yesterday when looking for a pizza dough recipe. Your bread machine videos were very impressive. I bought mine three years ago, used it once, then put it away. I was disappointed in the loaf, mostly because of the hole in the bread and its height...taste wasn't great either. This video and others I've watched is encouraging me to bake. Thanks for taking the fuss out of cooking. Yes, I am a subscriber now.
This looks delicious! I think I'll make this, for sure. Like you, I have the Nesco canner and have made videos using it, and like you, I've had people say less than nice things about it. I'm using it (and making videos using it) anyway. :) I think your videos are what introduced me to the canner, and I'm thankful for that.
I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying the videos and the canner. I'm trying to have a tougher skin but sometimes its hard. I hope that you continue to make your videos because people are eager to learn new technics. Cheers, Colleen

I learned so much from this. I have never heard of a Nesco canner before. It would sure beat those great big canners that you have to fill with water and drag off the stove. I really like the idea of something small and easy to use. The soup looks so good, and I never turned down a biscuit. Thank you.
@vickiheath6133 I love my Nesco for a variety of things. Small batch canning when you don't have enough jars to fill a regular canner and for making chicken stock it's awesome. Best wishes, Colleen

For all who are interested I just got a nesco canner from amazon. I am new to canning in a pressure canner and I can't wait. I will make some chicken burger soup. Thank you for your input. I look forward to your ongoing recipes.
Hello and thanks for watching. I see that the Nesco is available on amazon.ca once again but in Canada where I live the amazon price is $389.33 plus $81.60 import fees. I just purchased one for a family member on wayfair.ca for $192.00 plus taxes which came out to $221.00 Canadian. So if you live in Canada have a look at Wayfair. Cheers, Colleen
Colleen, I've just discovered your UA-cam videos, and enjoy them so much! Thank you for your thoughts on Carey Nesco...I have used one for the last 4 or 5 years, and appreciate it for the same reasons you gave. People here in US are in some cases, so scared of using one for canning; in fact, I've gotten booted from a couple of FB groups for encouraging folks to try one. Just finished 5 pts of dry pinto beans, and will be starting some "baked" beans this afternoon. Thank you for the time you spend to help people learn this very useful and economical craft! Can't wait for your next recipe.....
The hamburger vegetable soup is in the pressure cooker right now. The dry canned potatoes turned out great yesterday and I opened a jar today to go with supper. Even my finicky husband enjoyed them, so they're a win! 😀
@@oursilvermoments6028 I do, thank you! I love canning and my next large project is canning up 20+ pumpkins that I grew this year. Looking forward to more videos from you soon. Hugs!
Thank you so much for making these videos! I didn't know that there were electric canners or I would have bought this a long time ago. If you have more 1 meal canning ideas, I would love to see them.
Thank you for your comments. I will continue to work on recipes we use with the canner. Some of our recipe are not approved by the Nation Center for home preserving however they have worked well for us for years. All the best! Colleen
Wow I just found this channel. Thank you so much for your recipes as well as canning content. I also love love the channel name!!😎. I'm 57 yrs old & I have never made Hamburger Soup. I can say that I absolutely will now. Thank you for sharing. 👩🌾🏡☮
Hi Brenda, it's a family favorite, .on made it with broken mini lasagna noodles and then melted cheese on the top. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers, Colleen
I've got a batch of potatoes dry canning in my stove top pressure canner right now and hamburger thawing for this next. I've been canning for over thirty years and I love finding new ways to do things. Love your channel and thank you for sharing!
I’d like to use chicken broth or stock in my soups like hamburger soup onion soup in a few other things it doesn’t overpower the vegetables like a real heavy beef stock would. I do you like beef stock when I making beef and noodles. Also, I like the beef stock when I am making beef stroganoff. Answering your question about butter, we keep our butter on the counter that were use it out of. I do have several sticks in the refrigerator. Just so I have them stable enough so when I want to put it on on the counter, I can. 😊
Thanks for answering. Wayfair USA is Out of those canners….the company itself is out too. I did not check with Wayfair Canada though. We live in FL but have family in Canada and visit every summer…..
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate these canning videos! You remind me of when I was learning waterbath canning with my grandmother and aunt. Neither of them ever did pressure canning, so I feel like I get the family learning experience from you, thank you!
Wow... I don't know if I've ever been first,lol... I love having soup on the shelf, such an easy meal. I think you would know more than anyone if your jars are good and sealed. I've heard good thing good things about the Nesco canner. Everyone should do their own research on everything they can. What's good for someone might not be good for me or vice versa. I use the paste that comes in the tube. It's so easy. Especially when you only need a few tablespoons. Wow that actually went pretty quick.... I qualify on the lazy side every now and then. But I don't mind canning broths for how many days it takes and have it for the year. I do both? lol We haven't really run out of anything here. When I see something I but it. The flats for sure. Dollar General had them I picked up 12 boxes. I thought that canner only held 4 pts.. That great is holds the 5. It holds 4 qts right? Nope my butter is on the counter also... I love cooking with the butter milk. Add you honey to your butter milk it will mix in easier. I have those same collins glasses your cutting the biscuits with..lol. I love drinking juice out of them. The biscuits look great! Have a wonderful time at your daughters. And thank you again Colleen
Thanks so much! I'm really excited to see them all, each of the family members I'm going to visit is immune compromised so I am isolating right now to be safe when I get there. Cheers, Colleen
I love hamburger anything. I like that you make it and can it. Thanks. My aunts always can left over soup for later times. So make a big pot of soup 🍲 then can the rest .My husband is from Edmonton, AB.
Hello Teresa, thank you! Having canned soup certainly does makes lunches easier and its nice to know that you know every ingredient. Thanks for watching! Colleen
So many possibilities to canned stockpile! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise , ideas and opinions! You certainly make this whole process easier to understand!

I cook big batches of rice and once cooked I shrink wrap potions for the freezer. Especially brown rice which takes forever. Very convenient and it steams up quickly in the microwave.
I have been looking for a hamburger pepper soup. I am so going to make this to can. And those biscuits are to die for. Thanks so much!! Hugs. Have a great vacation
Thank you Donna, We love hamburger soup. It's such a simple meal and with just a change or two it can go from a hearty soup with macaroni to a stuffed pepper soup with rice. I am excited to take my 12 year old great niece along on this road trip and show her the ocean. The last time the two of us left on an adventure she was 5 and we went to Disneyland. Stay safe and all the best, Colleen
This is so cool, I understand what your saying, I work a lot of hour and I have a lot of health issues, so haven something done like this is wonderful, thank you for showing this
Hello Hot Mess, It has been heaven sent for us. I am training my replacement at work as I prepare to retire next spring and by the end of the day I'm just pooped so its nice to come home to food that only needs warming up. Cheers, Colleen
Just found your channel. My Canadian friend made this for me a long time ago and we loved it. I plan on canning some. Thanks for sharing. I will be checking out your channel.
So, I HAVE to leave you a comment. I suck at making biscuits. I have been known to waste an entire bag of flour in an afternoon trying to make an edible batch of biscuits. So I quit trying years ago. Last week, I found you while looking for a recipe to can hamburger soup. So, I canned some soup, and that evening I made chili and decided to try making your biscuits. They came out perfect! In the past week, my husband has asked for the biscuits at least 4 times, and this evening I made a triple batch. Thank you so much for the recipe :) They work for any kind of meal, and are also perfect for biscuits and gravy. My husband has even shared them at lunch at work and everybody loves them, lol.
Oh Courtney I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying that recipe. They are a favorite of ours and they freeze so well! I just cook them up put them on a tray and freeze them and then pop them in a zip lock bag. When you want to eat one just put it on a plate in the microwave about 20 seconds and it's just like they are fresh! All the best and thanks for watching! Colleen
Colleen, I was so happy when you showed the Nesco canner in another video. I have been wanting to can but am too afraid of the regular pressure canners. I ordered the Nesco (currently out of stock) and cannot wait til it comes. I am now subscribed to your channel and hope you will feature more Nesco canning videos in the future.
I like your tutorials. Just wondering why you didn't wash the peppers (because of the sticker) And the celery. Celery always has dirt on it. Does that not matter for the canning process?
Hi Melanie, Thank you! I cannot tell you how many times I've made those biscuits over the years. They are fast, easy and delicious. It is also wonderful to have the soup in the pantry for a quick meal or just those days you don't have a lot of energy. Thanks for following along. Cheers, Colleen
Found you while looking for nesco canner! I really love your videos. I do love video’s on Facebook live and add them to UA-cam. You are one that I really relate to. God bless you! Pamela McManis
By watching your videos, I finally made the investment and bought a Nesco electric canner. A few years ago I purchased the Presto stove top canner. I still have not been able to use it...I am renting and we have a glass-top stove that when I called to see if it was ok to use the Presto canner on it, they didn't recommend doing so since it is an older model stove. I was looking into getting a portable stove burner to use the presto canner on, but I decided on getting the electric canner because it can do smaller batches and I don't have a lot of kitchen storage space. Im planning on buying a house in the next 6-8 months and want a kitchen with a BIG walk in pantry to can to my hearts content. Thank you for posting very informative videos. I look forward to starting my canning adventure.
Hello Blessed Gypsy, I have not had one bad experience with my Nesco canner. A couple of weeks ago I ran into a fellow I know who bought the Nesco about a year ago after watching my videos and he said his had died. I said "Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that" and he said don't be sorry I ran 600 jars through that canner and I have ordered a new one to replace it. I hope that you have the same kind of experience. Thanks for following along. Best wishes, Colleen
Colleen I am going to try this as it is very similar to my Macaroni Soup but with beef in it. Fabulous !!! & your biscuits are called Scones over here & yes trying them as well. My soup will be in my canning pantry as I love to have easy meals like this for my Husband & myself. Cheers Denise- Australia
Thank you Denise, its great to have someone from Australia here in the community. I would definitely add macaroni to this before I use it. I just wouldn't cqn it with the macaroni in it. I find it makes it too soft. Thanks for being here. Cheers, Colleen
Hi Colleen , your soup and Biscuits look delicious ! And I think you could even exchange the Hamburger meat for ground Chicken or even Sausage meat and make different versions of the soup snd if using Sausage maybe add chopped Kale or Spinach to the soup ! What do you think ? I thought of the Chicken because my son has Gout and isn’t able eat red meat or any processed foods because it will throw him into a flair up with his Gout and I don’t know if your familiar with this disease but it causes intense pain snd swelling in the affected areas that usually last for 1-2 weeks ! There is medicine that can be taken daily to help keep down the flair ups , but my son is allergic to some if the ingredients in the medicines so he can’t take any of them !! So I will make your delicious soup for him using Chicken and I know it will be delicious !! Thank you again for your delicious recipes , God bless ! ❤️🙏🙋🏻🌈🌈
I ordered my nesco on Walmart internet site cost only $110 & plus tax. Free shipping. Got my notice from Walmart, order has shipped! Will be here Thurs! Can’t wait!
I love my Nesco & my daughter bought one as well. Carey made them prior and they are now one company. Rose Red Homestead here on YT did a study on it and a few others. It was most reliable. (She’s a scientist/ college professor with multiple PhD’s. So I choose to trust her science.) I have always had good luck with mine and I’m still alive :)
I've never seen tomatoe paste in a tube. How perfect is that! I just learned the Amish can al denta noodles in their soup. I'm going to try that. They water bath everything even meat. They have never heard of the FDA.
There are many canners out there that still water bath everything because that is the way they learned to do it from their mothers and grandmothers. Cheers, Colleen
@@oursilvermoments6028 Making this right now. Smells so good and the dogs won't leave the kitchen!! I bought the Smart Canner based on your videos - it's so much easier and hopefully, the pressure stays even. My Presto canner drove me bonkers. So, thanks again.
There are so many things here in the US that have been used, some for generations, that are not "USDA" approved. These range from foods to jars and lids - We call this "Rebel Canning." Honestly, the USDA does not give me warm fuzzies. Using common sense and following established, approved lessons should be followed exactly while learning, but once you have that knowledge, apply common sense. Works for me.
Could you please video canning hamburger? I have seen other videos pertaining to this, but not using a pressure canner. Maybe combining hamburger and sausage?
Really enjoyed your video and see you don't warm your jars or lids like I've seen other canners do, is that because of the Nesco canner? I also think I'm going to try your Hamburger Soup, Thank you

If you have a dehydrator, dehydrate your tomato paste; then powder the dried pieces as needed into powder. Rehydrates amazingly!

Hi Brenda, it's a family favorite, .on made it with broken mini lasagna noodles and then melted cheese on the top. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers, Colleen
I just enjoy your videos so much. I’ve learned so much from your baking, canning and cooking. Take care
Awesome videos and recipes. I am learning a lot from you. Thanks 😊
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing your recipes in the drop down box.
Your welcome Reta. I think its hard to follow olong so try always to add the recipe or share a link if it wasn't my recipe. Cheers, Colleen
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate these canning videos! You remind me of when I was learning waterbath canning with my grandmother and aunt. Neither of them ever did pressure canning, so I feel like I get the family learning experience from you, thank you!
Hello J H, Awe, thank you for the kind words and I really enjoy sharing my knowledge with everyone as if we are one big family. All the best, Colleen
I have only ever canned by water bath.
My Aunts use to call it ‘Chop meat chowder’ we had it often, Delish hot comfy stew with bread on the side.
My daughter and I would like to thank you 😊 We appreciate your teachings and your thoughts…God Bless you ❤️
Oh my gosh, thanks so much! And Blessing to you ❤
I do both? lol
We haven't really run out of anything here.
Thank you for sharing.. !!!! I look forward to trying this... :) Alberta girl...
Hello Tina, I'm so happy you found it interesting! It is a simple hearty meal. Welcome neighbor! Cheers, Colleen
Have a safe trip and enjoy your family visit.
Colleen
In mid Illinois in August butter in the cupboard even with the ac on it would melt!
Hi Janet, I never considered that other places would be hotter and able to keep butter the way we do. Thanks for your comments. Cheers, Colleen
Great recipe! Colleen, you certainly are Not lazy! You seem very efficient, and all you show is so helpful. Thank you 😊
I have had Nesco products for years and they have been great. No problems,I love them.
I think they make a great mid priced product and I love my Nesco canner.
So many possibilities to canned stockpile! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise , ideas and opinions! You certainly make this whole process easier to understand!
Hello Chris, It does my heart good when people learn something from the videos I put up. Food security is important and everything we can do for our selves puts less burden on everyone else. Cheers, Colleen
New subscriber...checked back on the recipe the realized I forgot to subscribe...oh boy...thank you for sharing your knowledge cheers from Pennsylvania Blessings 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hello Wanda, welcome aboard! I hope to keep you interested in coming back every week. Although I live in Canada some of my people emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania and then To Canada. Cheers, Colleen
😊 I do that also and have for many many years! Ha ha I fluff flour too.
I just loved this video!
I cook big batches of rice and once cooked I shrink wrap potions for the freezer. Especially brown rice which takes forever. Very convenient and it steams up quickly in the microwave.
great video.. Blessings
Thanks Karen, Brightest Blessing! Colleen
My son was just asking for soup on the shelf and this looks like a winner.
This one is a winner and I hope your son enjoys it too!
Thank you Irene, I appreciate you watching and your comments. Colleen
Colleen
Great recipe. Made a batch tonight.
I was thinking the same thing.
Great video. Thank you! I canned up some beef Vegetable and have made your delicious biscuits twice!
Won't butter spoil in your cupbard?? Like get mold?
Wow, this looks delicious. Wrote the recipe down. I will surely be canning this. Love soups.
Hope you enjoy this! We sure do. Cheers, Colleen
Found you while looking for nesco canner! I really love your videos. I do love video’s on Facebook live and add them to UA-cam. You are one that I really relate to. God bless you! Pamela McManis
Hello Pammy, Thank you I am just a beginner UA-cam contributor but I am enjoying it so far. Thank you for watching and God bless! Colleen
Wonderful idea, thank you.
Thank you for watching!
All your videos are excellent. So simple and cheerful, (and your kitchen is gorgeous!)!
Looks good, I'm going to make both today. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
You didn't wash the celery first?
Please consider showing the stages of the canning process. I was disappointed you never showed anything else after starting the canner.
I'm sorry Tim, I sometimes forget that not everyone has been following along since I started and would have seen that in previous videos.
This looks so easy the way you do it. Thank you for all your ideas.
I'm so happy that you think so! It is a very easy process and the soup is delicious. Thanks for watching :)
Going to give this a try thanks for recipe 😊
Hello Carolyn, I hope that this recipe worked out for you! Cheers!
I ordered my nesco on Walmart internet site cost only $110 & plus tax. Free shipping. Got my notice from Walmart, order has shipped! Will be here Thurs! Can’t wait!
Delicious!!!!!
I love my Nesco & my daughter bought one as well. Carey made them prior and they are now one company. Rose Red Homestead here on YT did a study on it and a few others. It was most reliable. (She’s a scientist/ college professor with multiple PhD’s. So I choose to trust her science.)
I have always had good luck with mine and I’m still alive :)
Hello, I love my Nesco as well and have a great deal of admiration for Rose Red Homestead and how they present the science. Best wishes, Colleen
My husband would love this, can I add some worcestershire sauce to the broth before I can it? Thank you, suzie
I love love love your videos. Thank you so much. Keep showing us your ways. I’m learning so much.
Everything looks so good!
Thank you! I hope you find some useful information here. Best wishes, Colleen
I was raised on the farm too. I know what they fertilize the ground with, And I would NEVER Cook with unwashed vegetables
Excellent job thank you
This is great! Thank you! Do you have a video on canning jelly or preserves, jams?
I don't at the moment Melinda but I do have some coming soon. Cheers, Colleen
@@oursilvermoments6028 Thank you I look forward to watching
Love your channel so helpful and informative
Thank you Tammy! Its all over the place but thats what life is like for me. Thank you for watching! Best, Colleen
I’ve been looking for some new ideas
we keep our butter in the cupboard also
I just loved this video!!! Thank you!
Hello and thank you so much for watching! Hamburger Soup is a favorite of ours. Cheers, Colleen
Looks so delicious! I really like your videos. I'll be making this soup in the next week.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy this recipe and hope you will try some of the others as well. Best wishes, Colleen
@@oursilvermoments6028 Making this right now. Smells so good and the dogs won't leave the kitchen!! I bought the Smart Canner based on your videos - it's so much easier and hopefully, the pressure stays even. My Presto canner drove me bonkers. So, thanks again.
@@harpgal9950 your welcome! I hope you enjoyed the soup? Cheers, Colleen
@@oursilvermoments6028 Yep, delicious!
Ty
There are so many things here in the US that have been used, some for generations, that are not "USDA" approved. These range from foods to jars and lids - We call this "Rebel Canning." Honestly, the USDA does not give me warm fuzzies. Using common sense and following established, approved lessons should be followed exactly while learning, but once you have that knowledge, apply common sense. Works for me.
I use distilled water when I can and have no foggy jars. Just a tip!
I just add vinegar
Could you please video canning hamburger? I have seen other videos pertaining to this, but not using a pressure canner. Maybe combining hamburger and sausage?
Really enjoyed your video and see you don't warm your jars or lids like I've seen other canners do, is that because of the Nesco canner? I also think I'm going to try your Hamburger Soup, Thank you
Hello Susan, I pack hot into hot and cold into cold but will be more mindful to show the whole process in the future. Cheers, Colleen
Hey Colleen I sure am enjoying your Nesco electric canner videos. Do you have a French onion soup recipe you could share with us? Thank you for all the work you do to show us how to use this canner.
Hello Reta, I haven't tried french onion soup yet but I will definitely put it on the list of things to try. Cheers, Colleen
The Ball Canning book has a good recipe on page290
