Sorrento is the crown jewel of the Sorrentine Peninsula, a stunning strip of coastline with the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea on one side and the towering peaks of the Lattari Mountains on the other. The peninsula extends for 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Naples (Napoli) and north of Salerno in the southern Italian region of Campania.
The entire Sorrentine Peninsula is a treasure trove of natural beauty, with highlights including Sorrento as well as the equally picturesque towns of Positano and Amalfi.
Immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters off the coast, marvel at the dramatic cliffs by sea on a mini-cruise, unwind over a romantic dinner with a view of the water, and meander along the narrow, winding lanes under a lush canopy of olive and lemon trees. These are the unique charms that make Sorrento one of the top destinations in all of Italy for those who want to experience the country’s timeless "la dolce vita" atmosphere.
Where is Sorrento?
Sorrento is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast when arriving from Naples, and it's about a 20-minute drive from the Amalfi Coast and about 30 minutes from Capri by ferry. After Sorrento, the next towns are Positano, Praiano, Conca de' Marini, Amalfi, and the other villages along the coast.
You can reach Sorrento by bus from Naples or Amalfi. There are also ferries in the summer from Naples and Capri.
Sorrento, a town built on the cliffs of the Sorrentine Peninsula, in the province of Naples, by the sea. It is absolutely breathtaking to see these houses perched on the cliffs, surrounded by lush vegetation, citrus gardens, and palm trees.
During your walk in the town, your steps may take you down a sloping lane and at the end you see the sea, and just like many visitors, you will have the impression that the lane falls into the sea, it’s really surprising! Visiting the town requires some effort and good shoes, because it is made up of numerous stairs or steps that cross the streets.
Despite these challenges, Sorrento has a charm of its own and proof of this is because the town, in summer, is crowded with tourists and artists have made it their place of creation.
Sorrento, thanks to its port, was a flourishing town in the 16th and 17th centuries, then the inhabitants deserted this region to go to the United States to experience a better life. The town lived only from its fishing then tourists arrived in the middle of the 20th century and since then it has drawn its main wealth from tourism because its coast is one of the most beautiful on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Faced with the influx of rich tourists, luxury boutiques are set up on the street and the town is experiencing a surge in prices which does not make the inhabitants happy.
On the town square “Piazza Tasso” you will find the church which is mentioned in the legend of the Madonna.
Sorrento is not just about natural beauty and historical sites, it also offers a vibrant nightlife. As the sun sets, the town transforms into a lively hub with something for everyone.
For those who enjoy a bustling atmosphere, there are numerous bars and clubs where you can dance the night away. The music ranges from traditional Italian tunes to the latest international hits, ensuring a memorable night for all.
