@@wandhatt That isn’t true at all. This whole South Money for North progress is a sham. The Center always collected more money from richer states and spent on poorer states. That’s true from 1947 till today. That’s the job of the Center. The difference is that now what the Center is spending is actually getting dividends.
And as for this South vs North, because people say Southern India is more progressive and rich but they don’t get as much for their taxes, India is still a “socialist” economy, of course Rich will pay for “poor” welfare.
And don’t forget, South didn’t become rich on its own, it became rich because of the Center, faster because of the Center understood the value of setting up Industries in the coastal region for better import and exports. Mind you, “freight cost free” raw material was delivered from North to the South for Industries which made it impossible for Industries to be set up in North as their goods couldn’t be competitive if they had to ship their finished goods to the South “with freight charges” for export or the charges for “import” of goods from. Southern ports to North.

@@libshastra Obviously, those who got jobs 10 years ago, they will have enough money to spend on dry fruits 😜
"Importantly, the numbers show that the proportion of spending on food has dropped to 46.4% for rural households from 52.9% in 2011-12, while their urban peers spent just 39.2% of their overall monthly outgoes on food compared with 42.6% incurred 11 years earlier."
So if you see above data, even if food consumption is half, the income soent on food is just reduced by 5% only. It means either price are so high or Income has reduced.
Also compare the data from 1999 and 2011. Consumption were decreased more than 50%. So it is natural.
Dry fruits consumption has increased bcz it will increase day by day. We were poor country. UPA bring out 27 crores out of poverty and Modi government brought 25 crore out of poverty (as per government data). So few of them will start consuming dry fruits.
It is relative data. I have not compared the 1999 to 2011 data for dry fruits but I can blindly say that, it would have increased too. It is simple natural flow.

It certainly shouldn't be! China's experience is a good lesson. It has a smaller average land holding size and much less fertile land, yet it's agricultural productivity is around 2x India's. The difference is they reformed their agricultural sector in the 70s and got rid of price controls on output (food) and inputs (fertilizer, power) in favor of direct support to farmers. This is not so different from what the Indian government did with with direct benefit subsidy. If only economics was taught better people might understand the downsides of price floors and ceilings and how they disrupt the supply-demand equilibrium.

For example: The Covid vaccine which people got, the new school building that got built , the newarport/railway station does not show up directly in the Personal Consumption. So these numbers do not show the full power of the econom. The new buildings built by a call center company- many things are not PCE but do matter a lot!

    2. The government is providing free grains to ~80 crore people, i.e. ~56% of the total population. So basically 56% of the population is actually poor because if these people were to buy grains themselves, they would fall below the poverty line.
