For around $300, this is a MUCH better learning laptop than that weird clear-back thing from a few weeks ago. Freaked out at first when I saw the pricing, then realized it was HK $... The removable wireless keyboard/touchpad is genius.
ETA's wife: Honey, the new refrigerator is coming today. It's a smart fridge with Android built in. Can you fit it and transfer all the food over before it goes bad? 6 hours later: "I got Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast running but I have to enable frame skip. And all the food is bad now."
This is what the PC space used to have going for it. Lots and lots of cool odd, sometimes useless, sometimes amazing projects and addons. All that just kinda got optimized out and we were left with a few very big players making computing hardware. I love seeing the PI have this maker community around it that imagines new niche ideas. Even though this isn't for me and I can see the issues like lack of battery. I'm still overall loving it. I think its mainly supposed to be used near wallpower. Its not really super portable like a real laptop with all that hardware inside so I'm not judging it for the lack of battery. Roll on more wacky new ideas around the PI!
One minor point to mention, the units being sent out for review right now are their small batch pre-production units which have some issues they are correcting before shipment to backers. The Deluxe kits will include a battery pack, hopefully they will carry enough amps to alleviate the issue you mentioned and will fit in the tray. Appreciate the review, I have some on order as well but decided to wait for the final production units.
Thanks for showing this. I pre-ordered the deluxe edition. Mine comes with a battery and raspberry Pi 4B 8GB edition. The other models come with less stuff and lower end raspberry pi's.
@@ignjatmarinkovic7884 That applies to TSA guidelines for checked baggage on commercial flights. Shipped as cargo, there are rules like having the battery at below 30%. However you can order bulk ion batteries from china, directly to your house. I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.
Modular laptop with teaching capabilities. More of this please. Next generation maybe it can be stretched out to incorporate the pi to the same height of the inner learning board to slim it up.
You could use a CCTV battery pack or a lipo jump pack to power it from the 12v dc jack. Finding something that fits nicely in that little drawer is gonna be tough tho.
The thing is with RPi 3b and 4 is that they are USB Hosts and need more than the 5 volts USB peripherals run on otherwise they don't have the overhead they need. Try using high quality cables but also chop cable in half and add a DC-DC converter and set it to 5.11 Volts under load.
If the Pi 400 can use a long, slender form factor board, then someone should make a laptop shell that uses the same board and allows room for a battery. Make it thinner!
Reminds me of a modern version of the Heathkit electronics trainers. I'm willing to overlook the height in favor of the keyboard tray and project board inside.
Hey, ETA, you should have with a Power Delivery backup battery what that does is automaticly adjust to the amount of power you device needs, so that it will always have enough
Very glad the ideas got implemented. Wow. Another idea for a battery less laptop (affordable this way) is phone cases but for laptops. Customize your RPI laptop with phone similar case covers.
IMO it was definitely a bit of a miss-step to include a keyboard that requires a dongle when the Pi has bluetooth built in. And how does the keyboard charge? Do you have to plug it in separately to charge it or does it charge while set in the laptop?
Can you review the Minecraft lessons on the crow pi2? I didn’t have great luck with them. Also, did you ever find a better battery that fit in the slot?
You know. Considering most pis have bluetooth now. I feel like it would have made much more sense to have the keyboard/trackpad be bluetooth, and have a magnetic connect for a direct usb connection. Maybe have the OS auto pair on connect if possible
Please make an update video if you find a battery pack that works with it. I have so many USB batteries laying around the house but I'm not convinced that any of them will work but that's a huge selling point for me.
Well, I ordered mine. I had been looking for a laptop shell for my pi 4. I hadn't intended to get the deluxe kit, but it came with so many neat sensors and gadgets, and was much easier than buying all that stuff separately. Thanks for the review!
How is the screen is connected for power? If you used a battery with two USB ports, could you plug the Pi and the screen in separately? Use two cables and a single high quality battery, I mean.
If anything, it's more likely to get on a plane than most high end laptops, as their high capacity batteries prevent them from being allowed on passenger planes.
It would be nice if they sold this without the learning kit. The last time you did a Pi laptop thing I went to the website and it looked like it was already discontinued.
Looks fun but practical wise for the price I'd just gather up a few hundred more dollars and get something 2 to 3 times more powerful... depending on the sales maybe 4 times more powerful.
As you say Minimum 3.0 Amp 15w Battery, And a Thick Cable, i have one here that's USB3 A to Mirco B its Thick USB 3.0 Cable E34003 AMW 20276 80c 30v VW-1 XLY (80c 30v would be what to look for )
The issue with the battery is shipping. I can understand why they wouldn't want to include it, to be honest. It's a PITA to ship anything with batteries these days.
So, can I remove and replace the SB with another one so I can have one SB as a dedicated emulator and another as a laptop? (Like a plug and play. No setting changes needed)
i wish we could just get a pi laptop like they had with the 3 BUT that wasnt $300. for that kind of $ i could buy a used laptop, upgrade it, convert it to ssd and use whatever OS i want.

If 4gb ram is not enough you can open it up and change the pi and you can even put a lattepanda Alfa if you can cut a hole for it
