Veilguard releasing soon has me thinking more about the lore. Earlier this year I started a draft for a Sylaise lore-bit fanfic and only recently finished it (I hyper-procrastinated the summary section and worked on it just briefly and intermittently over the months). I encountered this video this Summer and figured I'd share my work here when I finally posted it, as you're one of relatively few I've seen discuss Sylaise. You actually touched upon the Song to Sylaise in here, which my writing is a parody of. She isn't my favorite Evanuris currently, and I doubt she ever would be, even if we found out more about her; but for whatever reason I've always been more curious about her than many of the others. I don't envision her exactly the same way as you do. I imagine her being pretty blatantly evil, as with the rest, and I think I would ascribe the shadow traits you ascribe to her to Mythal instead. However, when it comes to the civic (architecture, empire-building, etc.) aspects, our visions definitely align. I had never thought of the continuity of civilization thing. That's interesting, and definitely possible. I could see Mythal serving a similar role (either instead of Sylaise or along with her). Here's my work. Hope you enjoy if you decide to check it out: archiveofourown.org/works/60060910
Interesting theory. I dunno what her primary vice was since information on her is lacking but one thing developers wanted us to know is that she was as vain as the rest of Evanuris. Consider this passage from a codex entry "Vir Dirthara: Raising the Sonallium": " ....The well-dressed elves' shouting grows so loud, it can be heard over the magic. One leaps at another, howling and pulling out a knife burning with prismatic flame. "Architects of the Grand Sonallium (a gift from Blessed Sylaise to Clever June as thanks for a great favor) in friendly debate over the color of the palace's roof trim." "friendly debate" comment about a potentially deadly fight sounds ridiciulous it's almost comical. What it does say is that strife was a common occurence among Evanuris and that Sylais was not a stranger to it. Seems like she wasnt as wise as Mythal or wise at all since she would get into conflicts for most dumbest things such as the color of the palace's roof trim.
Oooooh, that's curious. I thought that the people in that vision were her followers or slaves with a better education haha. There must have been other architects, right? If we look at this from your point of view, she was not wise or caring at all!
I think sylaise was not the 'Goddess of Domestic Arts' but rather an architect whom worked with all the Evanuris to build their temples and the city of Arlathan. The Dalish had no cities, and thus no need to revere a goddess with the aspect of architecture. Instead they assigned her with homely knowledge. June imo would be a smith/craftsman that worked together with her to sculpt metals, crystals and lyrium into her buildings. Hence the gift of Sylaise to June to cement their collaboration. As Sylaise was just as much a former war commander, turned general, turned goddess, she is just as viscious as the others. Just as power hungry. So getting her hand on Lyrium and later the Blight to be able to be able to make even more complex shapes for her building makes sense. Having Mythal removing the knowledge on how to get the Blight from Andruil would have upset all the Evanuris. All would oppose Mythal gatekeeping that power, without them considering the dangers. The Rvanuris were above such dangers in their eyes and their subjects were only good for worship and sacrifice at that point. All they did was to get more powerful, at the expense of others. Even one of their own..
Also, on the note of not knowing much about her, or her domain being changed; We hardly know which stories are correct and which ones were heavily altered to fit the needs of modern civilizations. Those Evanuris we do know more of is also just from a memory or their relation to Mythal. June has all but disappeared from the modern stories, and Elgar'nan is only known as a vengeful and quick to fight character..
Hm...so, a public face and a private face concept. She appears one person to her followers and when she's among her equals...she just uses her audience as resources for her projects. It sounds intriguing! 🥳🔥
I wonder whether Sylaise' story has any parallels to the Qunari. Her temples rivalling Mythal's cities conjures imagery of vast numbers of slaves in colossal work camps, constructing immense structures dedicated to the vanity of the Evanuris. Similar to the Tamassrans, she could have also been responsible for the education/indoctrination of the elven people.
I’m along the same line. Sometimes hearth-fires are described as having a hypnotizing effect. I think Sylaise was charged with the soft/gentle propaganda the elves got. The softer the propaganda is, and the earlier it starts, the harder it is to break free from it. That could explain how her very breath could rival that of her peers. The very concepts of “home” and “safety” and “warmth” could be the bedrock of the obedience of the elves.
I've thought of the Tamassran analogy too! In fact, my second (and last work on Sylaise for the time being), which I haven't published yet, takes inspiration from this idea. I linked my first piece in a comment above. I'll put my next one in the comment section when it's completed.
I knew very little of this goddess. After watching your video, I feel like I have a more comprehensive understanding of her and what she represented amongst the Elven Pantheon. Now, every time I think of the Goddess Sylaise, I just hear the Alicia Keys song. "This girl is on Fire!" 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I think the reason why she's not as mentioned as the other gods. Maybe due to her isolation and overprotectiveness of her people. Making the other gods back off from her to avoid conflict. Especially if her fire was just as fierce as the god of vengeance. Outstanding Video Goose 😉🙏💚
what i find interesting is that while mythal is the goddess of motherhood, sylaise is separately considered the goddess of domestic arts. usually in real life/history, those two domains go hand in hand (eg the sphere of domesticity in the 19th century). but the elven pantheon has 2 separate goddesses for these, and i’m not sure what that implies. maybe bc there were a lot of slaves in elvenhan, domestic work wasn’t necessarily tied to parenthood? i actually theorize that if the evanuris and old gods are related, sylaise lines up with andoral, the old god of slaves, since cooking and cleaning is often assigned to servants and slaves, so maybe that is the case. idk, but i do find it interesting how you theorize sylaise really cared abt the elves to her detriment. it would be a cool foil to andruil (her sister), who had her followers begging her not to kill them.
Since reading the Horror of Hormak I think that the bas relief that shows one minute the priestess healing etc, then changing into her pushing the diseases into slaves sounds a lot like Sylaises true nature. I know it's Gillain'nains monster making factory but that particular part really made me think it could have been Sylaise in those reliefs. We know the Evanuris did work with each other. I hope we learn more about Sylaise and hopefully June as well. I have my own theories about him and his possible link to the dwarves and in particular the anvil of the void..
It does sound like a corrupted way of healing. The idea is tempting! I wish we had more codex pages to connect these two. Considering that Andruil was known as the lady of the hunt and then suddenly Solas said that she was a goddess of sacrifice...I won't be surprised if we learn something mind-blowing about Sylaise 👀
I wonder if she isn’t more like Darth Vader? You made an interesting point! Even good or noble intentions can be corrupted. Anakin Skywalker began as someone who lost his mother (and subsequently killed the tribe of Tusken Raiders who abducted her) and was scared of losing anyone else. His fear of having anyone around him die contributed to becoming the monster he fought against. I’m curious if Sylaise is similar to that?
Yeah, it's the similar pattern in a character who starts as a hero and becomes a villain because of his fears. The trauma could be different but the outcome is always the same when it comes to the Shadow-Self journey 🔥
Adoring all your videos on the Evanuris. Very excited to watch your video on Dirthamen, he's so mysterious and one of the less villainous Evanuris we learn about via their myths (maybe even a Blood Mage binding the demons Fear and Despair as he did) and I am desperate to know more!
Glad to know you enjoyed them 🥰 Thanks for the idea! I've been struggling to choose which Evanuris we should examine next. Dirthamen is a mysterious god with interesting stories
I find more curious, if she was indifferent, and Solas accused ALL Evanuris of killing Mythal .. so was Sylaise onto murder ? Or was she just bystander, just letting it happen. But if being a bystander was her nature, why would Fen'Herel condemn Sylaise too ? It was her very nature, she was always like that. I understand that she might turn blind eye from her isolating nature, on derangments and corruption of Andruil and Ghil'anain .. but to what end ? Andruil in madness could hunt down the very people that create Elven society, thus threat the domain of Sylaise.
This question bothers me too. We know that Solas is a bit dramatic sometimes. I can see him being a person who considers inaction as a particularly vile crime. Your theory is very interesting! 🥳
Even giving Sylaise the benefit of the doubt, knowing a terrible thing is about to happen and doing nothing about it is just as damning. When we know crimes are happening and refuse to report it, it’s called Failure to Report. You didn’t do it, but you knew and did nothing. There’s lots of examples in the real world.
Hm, watching this video I had a thought. We think about Evanuris as counsel of equals, existing simultaneously on relatively similar power level, or in Fen'Harel's interpretation generals of ancient war who rose together through ranks to kings and queens, proclaimed themselves gods, done big mistake of killing Mythal, which forced Solas to lead slave rebellion and create the Veil. Like it was one tidy timeline of sequential events. But, I'm not sure it was so linear or that simple. After all, they are immortal beings impossible to kill for good, living through thousands years of history. What if Evanura is a title like emperor or empress, and they were sitting on Elvenan's version of Iron Throne in different times, constantly dragging each other from it? Because once defeated they keep clawing back up to power few centuries later from whatever infamy they were pushed into extra pissed off and ruthless with each iteration. What if creation of the Veil wasn't his only solution for protection of elves? Solas is so comfortable with orlesian Grand Game. Reasonable to assume there were few hundred court intrigues, military coups and machiavellian schemes between death of Mythal and fall of Elvenan, which spawned a bunch of new problems down the line. Like kill Elgarnan for murdering Mythal by waging war in company of Andruil and Ghil'lanain and her monsters. Later deal with Ghil's fucked-up-ness by making alliance with creepy twins Falon'Din and Dirthamen. Banish those weirdos by empowering nurturing kind Sylaise and June. Loose their peace, because Elgarnan got better after dying and made some deals with demons in deep fade. Maybe fight him off only to see that Sylaise and June became tyrannical entitled assholes after centuries of warfare and no longer give a shit about people, willing to kill over color of roof tiles. Decide to go at it alone, grab the throne for himself and try to be fair ruler to people only to be dragged to another war. Because his past allies now united in hate for him and not shy about coming for his throat from various planes of exitance like untamable blighted hydra, enslaving and brainwashing people, stabling each other for previous betrayals while at it, since they are immortal, powerful and bad shit crazy after everything that happened. So radical change in fabric of reality modifying laws of physics was last resort to keep them all at bay. It would explain some rhetoric in Evanuris propaganda. Like Elgarnan and Mythal claim to be heads of pantheon and most powerful, because at the beginning they were first and only Evanuris. Sylaise claim to be stronger than Elgarnan, wiser than Mythal and sharper than Andruil like newly elected president, promising to fix mistakes of previous administration. And Solas treat them all as more of the same horrid evil, because he seen them all rise and fall into madness.
Haha, the "president" analogy made my day. You have many intriguing theories. After all, we are all speculating here, and only DAV will give us more context. I hope the game will cover some of your ideas!
I really wish that I grew up with the DA universe. The lore and the world building are interesting! I grew up with the Mass Effect series and its lore, world, characters and story. It is part of me and my soul. I am little scared and hopeful to the new game they are making. But I know that i will play the new Dragon Age for sure for several reasons. I have never finished any DA games, but I have some memories and experiences with the DA series.
This will sound odd or strange, but in a sense, I see Sylaise as a pacifistic version of Aries. Yes, he is a God of War, but in a sense, he is also a god of protection. Like Sylaise, he did this to protect a civilization. In her pacifistic nature, I could also see her as a God of spying. She might want to have eyes and ears everywhere to protect her people.
Interesting 🤔 If we read the codex pages, almost all of the Evanuris call themselves protectors...which is weird. There might be a more complex situation with their domain, after all
Perhaps she did start out as a god of community and then became corrupted into a god of slavery. After all, being enslaved on mass, is a twisted form of being a large community. Since slavery was so widespread, it made sense for it not to be questioned and as such, for Sylaise to be both normal and to be influential.
I always got the angle that she was kind but too cowardly to stand against the evanuris and ultimately sided with them against Mythal for the sake of peace among the others. I do like your interpretation better tho
I wonder if she's more of a Dolores Umbridge sort of goddess. On the surface, it's warm and fuzzy but it's "hiding" a fundamentalist view. The talking points she makes - the home - the hearth - the *family* - the culture (from outsiders?) - it does sound like the same talking points you hear from Christian/far right-wing fundamentalists in US politics.
Hi! Well, it's quite philosophical because of Solas's moral compass and friendship with Mythal. She either helped plan her assassination because she's so smart, or she knew everything and didn't help Mythal. I suppose he disliked her inaction. You know, something like, "If you're not with me, you're against me." But hey, these are just theories...who knows? Maybe Sylaise was the worst of the Evanuris haha Thanks for watching!
I can't see any reason for Sylaise, June or Dirthamen to kill Mythal. Is the trickster god lying to us or at least omitting things? He never actually says who specifically killed Mythal and it's interesting that Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain are the two Evanuris released. I can picture them, Andruil and possibly Falon'din killing Mythal but not the others. Perhaps we will learn more in The Veilguard.
They were all power hungry enough to call themselves gods, amass thousands of followers and sacrifice them when needed. All the Evanuris got sealed away in a city that contained the Blight, so Sylaise might also have been Blighted and thus had to be sealed away. If Mythal was actively trying to remove the Blight, even Sylaise would have reason to oppose her
True, we really need to know more to be sure. I'll agree here on the idea that all of the Evanuris thought they were better than others and exceptional enough to call themselves gods (even Mythal). Unhealthy narcissism can lead anyone to a very dangerous path 😅
In my interpretation Sylaise might be a scholar of sorts who was respected by the pantheon who turned into a tiger parent to her people
That's a really cool version to consider 🔥
I need to finish my own video then I will be checking this out!
