This film and two are suprisingly good 2 is the perfect equal of campy and cheesy and serious with the film not taking itself seriously in the slightest while this film is very good tho kind of forgetable in the grand scheme of things
In high school, I was at my buddies house and fell asleep watching Wrong Turn on HBO and woke in the middle of House of 1000 Corpses. Having never seen either, I thought Wrong Turn was a very long horror movie that shifts dramatically in tone at some point, as I thought the dead naked woman in the trunk of the car in 1000C was Eliza Dushku
As a kid from west virginia, this was always more terrifying to me than any supernatural horror movie. I was never afraid that an alien or monster would come into my room at night, but the fear of some freaks that live out in the woods climbing through my window and kidnapping me kept me up for many many nights.
Here in the southwest there's legends of people called The Sniffers. They get down on all fours and track people by scent like dogs. And there's there's the ultra violent, fiercely ruthless beings known as "Little Apaches". Even the real Apaches feared them. Think of savagely violent wee folk.
@order66 Kind of had the same thing going in southern Wisconsin. Where the " backwoods" portions were as close to cities of 100,000 people as 45-60 minutes away. And everyone is afraid of the original SkinWalkers and Windigo. MN and Iowa run a close second. The only big difference being you have travel a bit further to reach areas with populations of 58.
@@CC-vw6rp My commute to school is almost 2 hours from my parent's in a town of 58. But you'd never know there's actually a population density of more than one household every 3 miles. And there's pretty much no one in between. So I don't doubt that you're right. Even with the route being mostly highway, I have emergency rations as well as extra clothing, extra chargers, an extra ALS kit I bought during my EMT time, and blankets (including 2 thick comforters.) In my car. It really wouldn't take much to end up completely screwed in the case of a breakdown or something.
I just want to point out that Jake is played by an actor called Texas Battle and that is an amaaaaaazing name. Also I will defend Wrong turn 2 forever, that film is an over the top masterpiece and Henry Rollins was perfect. The rest of the series though? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Texas Battle is a staple in B action movies. He has been in several action films over the past 5 years with Bruce Willis who stars in them, and by stars in them I mean is in the movie for 15 mins but gets top billed. I heard Texas Battle and Bruce had some issues so they couldn't be on set together even when they were in the same scene and had to have their scenes filmed in ways where one was facing away from the camera and it was his stunt double and so they had to do twice the work when filming. They might be okay now because they were in a recent movie and were in the same scene. Anyways, Texas Battle is an awesome name. Sorry I got off topic.
Yeah the original is good. Reminded me a lot of that controversial episode of The X-Files called 'Home', which was definitely the best episode too btw.
is that the one where the kids play baseball then under the earth they find a foetus? that episode gave me the creeps which I suppose X Files should but I always preferred the ones between this & that one with Shia Lebouef where his dad is really lucky where there's barely any stakes or Sci Fi elements
A friend of mine told me his wife was interested in maybe watching the Xfiles and asked me if I would describe the show to her since he knew I was a fan of the show. So I talked to her about it, focusing on the conspiracy aspect. He later told me that she did decide to watch it but somehow the first episode she watched was Home! I got a good laugh out of that. I thought she would start with the first episode and work her way through but oh well.
I'm old enough to have seen "home" the night it premiered. I usually only watched X-Files when they had a "monster of the week" episode. That one was creepy and uncomfortable and definitely the best episode!!
I was thinking the exact same thing! Probably one of the most memorable episodes of the series, and of all the character deaths in the series, the sheriff and his wife's murder impacted me the most for some reason.
Wrong Turn 1 is a classic. That might have been the first horror movie I watched where I genuinely liked the group of young people. It actually shocked me and I still remember that to this day.
The scene in the first movie when the girl gets axed while they're in the trees is still one of the most memorable horror movie moments ever for me maybe I was just too young when I watched it or something, but it's 100 times more memorable than generic ghost #42 goes boo for the 6th time

I don't enjoy it as much, but I deeply appreciate what it does as a film and for the genre. Leading credence to what I said about there being an underground slasher resurgence, in the wild west days of early 2000s internet there was a segment that lasted a LONG time on Wikipedia insisting that these two films and the Wrong Turn franchise would have a three way crossover called Wrong Turn Behind the Hatchet. It likely would have been a mess, but one I'm sure horror fans would have eaten up, myself included. Jeepers Creepers (and its sequel) is a great monster flick masquerading as a slasher movie, and it does an amazing job with both genres. The first one will always be my favorite as my sisters and I were huge fans of Buffy at the time and were excited mainly from seeing Eliza Dushku in the raiders play another badass
The first Wrong Turn will always be my favorite. My wife and I still refer to Jeremy Sisto, who played Scott, as Flowerchild Goldbloom whenever we see him in anything because of it. Scott is totally the hippy lovechild of Jeff Goldbloom and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
Seriously, Wrong Turn 2: Dead End is a personal favorite. It's SUCH a fun and entertaining B-movie riot, with surprisingly good characters and a nice jab at reality-TV. I think it's the most self-aware film in the series, and by far the best one.
We went to the cinema to watch Wrong Turn, I seem to remember the 'creature' effects were done by Stan Winston studios. That alone tells you it actually had a budget.
Ngl, I didn't knew about this franchise until it was covered on the Dead Meat kill count. Maybe it just flew over my head or it was never really big promoted in my country. At least I heard that title but never gave it a second thought what the story would be about
Thank you! Thank you thank you thank you for being honest with your timestamps in the description! ^_^ Thank you for putting one for the ads and 1 that goes straight into the video! 💘 😻
I like a good double edged safety razor and cheap shark blades. It is easy to rinse out and sharp as heck but not too hard to get used to. Only cut myself like 3 times out of many uses.
Great review Ryan. Did you see the 2021 remake? I just reviewed it and compared it to the 2003 movie recently. It is "in name only" and aside from the characters taking a "Wrong Turn" it has NOTHING to do with the original 2003 movie. Even the characters are terrible. Especially the blond woman. Who's name I couldn't remember so I just called her Karen. It's a very fitting name for her character.
Watching wrong turn 5 is like watching a defenseless girl get beat up by a bunch of bullies, men and women, knowing there's nothing you can do, and all you can do is watch her walk away from it all bloodied up and bruised, crying her eyes out. That's how watching wrong turn 5 feels like.
I was literally just thinking yesterday, while watching another guy cover this series, "I really really hope Ryan is going to cover this someday, but I don't think that's happening for a while." Never been happier to be wrong 😁
Hatchet deserves its own in depth analysis, and shouldn´t be piled up with something else as just a point of comparison. I would love to see a light-hearted approach on the series as it pays a nice homage of the splatstick genre as a whole, and can be very enjoyable (with the help of a beer or two)
Haven't seen these but the family look more like that inbred family from The X-Files episode "Home". I remember it had a viewer discretion warning and was truly disturbing. No suprise it only aired once and was a while before it resurfaced again.
Was browsing the comments waiting to see this. Home probably wasn't the first piece of media to adapt this concept but the Wrong Turn movies definitely seem to have some influence from the episode, even the mutants appearances like you said.
Wrong Turn 3-6 are some of the sleaziest, cheesiest, dumbest, most ridiculous, mean-spirited and unintentionally hilarious parts of a horror-franchise I have ever seen! And that's why I enjoy them in a "crazy bullshit" kind of way...
I appreciate how Ryan never automatically writes off schlocky movies. Just because something isn't a masterpiece doesn't mean that it has nothing to contribute to an analysis or discussion
Schlock and masterpieces aren't mutually exclusive in my book. I watch a lot of transgressive movies and having schlocky content doesn't mean a movie doesn't have something to say. Too many people feel that being intellectual and philosophical has to equal highbrow. I hate intellectual sterility.
Someone should honestly make a supercut of Ryan saying 'hoyever' throughout his UA-cam career. I would listen to that as anxiety-calming ASMR, someone make it pls 😢
i loved the new Wrong Turn 2021. It absolutely does not fit into the previous films, but because it is part of the series, I think it's one of the best movies I've seen in awhile.
I’m afraid I don’t have anything incredibly witty, original or insightful to add here, but I absolutely love this channel, & having achieved nothing else of any note today - & I unequivocally haven’t! - I’m claiming the dubious honour of leaving the 94th comment! Yay for me...🤦🏻♀️ Edit: Crikey! Was that an incredibly young Jeremy Sisto getting shot in the back by a bunch of arrows? Curious!🙃
For me, Wrong Turn 1 & 2 are the best ones. That's it. I stopped at 4, couldn't take it anymore. The remake? Eh. I'll give them credit for being completely different but I prefer the inbred cannibals more. The twist was so obvious from the moment those 2 masked guys couldn't communicate well with the teenagers. And you have that dumb moment where they didn't run sideways, I guess they watched Prometheus. But hey, I liked the end credits. I'm glad it wasn't a downer ending. So just watch the first 2 and then Hills Have Eyes remake.
I'm going to have to back up the "tree jump". In the novel "First Blood", John Rambo jumps 10-20 feet from a cliff face into a pine forest. There's tons of branches in there, you'd have a decent chance to catch yourself, equal chance to poke your eyes out and hit every branch on the way down. But, there's a chance.
See, that was my problem with #5 - it tried to be a cynical and depressing "torture porn" film, but it completely forgot how ridiculous the premise was: The inbreed cannibals sabotaging the entire town with ease (even though there's a festival going on) like criminal masterminds, while the main characters are doomed no matter what they do. It's such a mess of a movie.
I didn't like the latest wrong turn film(the foundation). The only thing it had in common was just the name. It's basically a completely different movie.
Wow, they made so many sequels! I've not seen any of them but I'll probably give the second a look; although I don't know if it'll be for me. I enjoyed the more serious approach in the original. I liked the decision to keep the hunters as more of a 'presence' - as Ryan so aptly put it - and it has some genuinely tense moments because of this. The build up to the encounter, and the encounter itself within their cabin, was so good. I also quite vividly remember the sequence atop the trees. As with a lot of the times I watch these videos, I'm now in the mood for rewatch. EDIT: Oh, and I'll have to give the reboot a look, too.
I’d say overall quality wise the first Wrong Turn is the best but I think 2 is such a wild ride. It’s the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 of the franchise and I mean that in the BEST way. I think I’d rank the franchise as 1. Wrong Turn 2. Wrong Turn 2 3. Wrong Turn 6 4. Wrong Turn 4. 5. Wrong Turn 5 and 3. They both tie for last because both are pretty much unwatchable. Some real low tier junk in my opinion. I haven’t seen the reboot yet so I can’t rank it in the list.
I remember seeing this in theatres when I was in High school. I ended up watching it 3 times. It was so awesome & still byfar one of my favorite horror movies of all time!!!😁🙌🏼😁🙌🏼😁🙌🏼
love your essay videos Ryan as I am a massive fan of horror genre (both movies and video game) hoyever, I didnt find any video discussing Population 436. I watched that movie when I was a kid and I think the concept was soo good. could you do video essay about it pls? much thanks in advance. :)
The first two WT's are really good, but the first one is the only that does the premise justice. As you said, it eliminated all of the winking silliness the sequels became known for, and played it straight.
I can never differentiate Wrong Turn from Cabin Fever. My mind just blends them together into one bland, forgettable movie from that lackluster era in horror.
Not gonna lie I really enjoyed Wrong Turn 6. The story was stupid as fuck but they did at least spend some time on building up the turn of the main character. The hunting and the village drugging sequences were genuinely kinda good imo, which is just shocking.
For the love of god avoid Wrong Turn 7 cleverly branded as an actual Wrong Turn “reboot” to get people interested. One of the worst films I’ve watched in a long time. The writing is atrocious, and having a woke group of protagonists is not an excuse to churn out abysmal trash.
@ThatDumbBitch apart from the name everything about it was a “Wrong Turn”. I think the problem would have been had they called it The Foundation you’re essentially putting it up against films that have done that idea already, and done it better. Midsommar, The Wicker Man etc. So they probably figured it was close to the original just enough to market it as a reboot. And fair play, I myself probably would have had no interest in watching Wrong Turn 7 had they not done that. You can have a reboot that’s different to the original, that’s fine, but the premise has to essentially stay the same. Changing the inbred, mutant hillbillies to a kind of cult was kind of like making a Jaws reboot but there’s now a octopus instead of a shark. It’s stupid. If the name of the reboot film clearly doesn’t match the substance of the original, you’ve probably been conned by clever marketing.
Btw, the reboot would need its own video to explain what I mean... *but tell me this: What is the BEST film in the Wrong Turn series?*

I’ve always said this.. everything about wrong turn 2 was great
We went to the cinema to watch Wrong Turn, I seem to remember the 'creature' effects were done by Stan Winston studios.
That alone tells you it actually had a budget.
Don't be scared, me. Pirate Ryan Hollinger isn't real. He can't hurt you.
I was introduced to wrong turn by my friends. I love them, but I hate them. And by them I mean my friends
I wanted Henry Rollins character to survive and carry on to the sequels, lol. I would have loved to see him on a vendetta to kill these cannibals.
I love how your accent makes however sound like Howyever. It fills me with delight. Always enjoy the content, man. Hope you're well and safe.

Does "The Man Who Killed Hitler and then Bigfoot" count as direct to video? i just need someone to acknowledge that movies existence.

@@Nothing-1w3 the man who killed hitler and then bigfoot, starring sam elliot.
i saw that on a walmart dvd shelf once and i am concerned.
added to my watchlist! thanks!
I’m gonna be honest Harry’s razors suck their blades get clogged with hair constantly and are damn hard to clean
Have you tried dollar shave club?
I haven't and this comment is not sponsored, I'm just curious
They should rename their brand into Hairy razors then..
I like a good double edged safety razor and cheap shark blades. It is easy to rinse out and sharp as heck but not too hard to get used to. Only cut myself like 3 times out of many uses.
dollarshave and harry both suck, hoyever we need ryan to eat because he cant make content if he starves. soletstalkabouddit
Made sure to watch through the initial ad, cause we👏support👏our👏 creators👏in👏this👏house👏
Honestly might be the video I've been waiting for the most. This is literally like my third favorite horror franchise behind Freddy and TCM
This is the Great Value version of Deliverance. Great work, Ryan!
When Wrong Turn becomes Wrong Thought Process.

Hatchet deserves its own in depth analysis, and shouldn´t be piled up with something else as just a point of comparison. I would love to see a light-hearted approach on the series as it pays a nice homage of the splatstick genre as a whole, and can be very enjoyable (with the help of a beer or two)
I genuinely feel like they should’ve stopped after 4, that’s when shit got DUMB!
Ryan: "What do you use Harry's razors for?"
Three Fingers: "Food preparation."
Haven't seen these but the family look more like that inbred family from The X-Files episode "Home". I remember it had a viewer discretion warning and was truly disturbing. No suprise it only aired once and was a while before it resurfaced again.
Oh god that episode fucked me ALLLLLL the way up
@skylx08
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that episode debut a year or two ahead before Wrong Turn?
@@fenwar9060 Seven years actually! Wrong Turn came out in 2003, and “Home” aired in 1996.
@@myettechase
I smell lawsuit somewhere. 😁
The Adventure of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 2005- Full Movie HD what movie name plz
I appreciate how Ryan never automatically writes off schlocky movies. Just because something isn't a masterpiece doesn't mean that it has nothing to contribute to an analysis or discussion
Schlock and masterpieces aren't mutually exclusive in my book. I watch a lot of transgressive movies and having schlocky content doesn't mean a movie doesn't have something to say. Too many people feel that being intellectual and philosophical has to equal highbrow. I hate intellectual sterility.
Future video sugestion: "last house on the left" remake
This should’ve been a perfect opportunity to call the video ‘Wrong turn before it took a wrong turn’
Curious!🙃
Never been this early! So excited to see this video Ryan! Love everything you do!

The reboot just left me wondering how the chief founder had that impecable hair style living in a forrest/cave
Great video
"Sloane" and "rebellious cheerleader from 'Bring It On' " wearing tank tops all day...Definitely makes original the best.
Wrong turn 5 actually fucked me up a bit, some of the deaths were so uncomfortable, not the fun horror trip i thought it would be
Yeah. And that ending...yikes.
Not even "scary" horror just...well, like you said, uncomfortable.
@@randomcenturion7264 Agreed!
It's such a mess of a movie.
man he always structures these videos so well
ah, another day Ryan Hollinger uploads is another day I wear a smile
Huge guilty pleasure of mine, love all of them. I can’t put my finger on it, just genuine enjoyment for me!
I went and saw this in theaters just for Buffy’s faith. Love Eliza dushku.
Yup!!!! Same here. Her being in the movie was the best part.
Dude, I literally checked your channel yesterday to see if you had any videos about wrong turn. Serendipitous
I didn't like the latest wrong turn film(the foundation). The only thing it had in common was just the name. It's basically a completely different movie.
Such a disappointment after waiting 7 years for it, it upsets me more than it should but fffuu😠😢
It wasn't even a horror movie. Huge disappointment.
@@yazminbowyer3157 No cannibal hill Billies☹️
@@toaster4693 Exactly,it wasn't necessarily a bad film it was 'meh' but naming it wrong turn was click bait
They should give the series a rest and reboot it after a few years.
man's dissin wrong turn 4 but ya gotta admit that opening musical sequence is one of the most fun scenes you've seen in horror
The saddest death in the first one was clearly the mustang
“Resistance to pee-ing”? I love your accent 🤣
I love these movies, I’m a sucker for shit B movie gore and hillbilly’s.
I think I’d rank the franchise as
1. Wrong Turn
2. Wrong Turn 2
3. Wrong Turn 6
4. Wrong Turn 4.
5. Wrong Turn 5 and 3. They both tie for last because both are pretty much unwatchable. Some real low tier junk in my opinion.
I haven’t seen the reboot yet so I can’t rank it in the list.
The taking of Debrah Logan

Thanks! :)
The second film is easily the best film. Then the first and reboot. Then the rest are guilty pleasures that I kinda enjoy.
I remember seeing this in theatres when I was in High school. I ended up watching it 3 times. It was so awesome & still byfar one of my favorite horror movies of all time!!!😁🙌🏼😁🙌🏼😁🙌🏼
Speaking of a good 2000s horror movie that spawn a gory franchise with a reboot, how about a look at SAW?
love your essay videos Ryan as I am a massive fan of horror genre (both movies and video game)

I remember phelous did a review of the series and made a joke that the wrong turn villains go into space and fight aliens
The Reboot was alright they skipped the stereotypical cannibals and introduced a secluded colony which I thought was kinda cool
Wrong Turn is one of my favorite movies. I didn't get past the beach scene in the sequel 🤦♀️
Basically Wrong Turn is more or less The Forest Has Eyes
