I just love stories like this. I love that Shanti had a need and someone listened. In return she can share her gift with you. I'm sure she is thankful for all that the humans do for her. I wonder how she instinctually new to put a beginning, middle & end to her pieces. This is a good thing in life. Someone needs to design a larger size harmonica.
I'm left speechless elephants are very smart and intelligent animals always learning something new each day from them god bless you guys thanks you guys rock very impressed didn't know she could play the Harmon great job young lady you should be amazed and proud way to go !!! Joe
They should set up one of those old fashioned "One Man Band" things for her with a horn, drum, harmonica and cymbal all attached together. Let her see what she can do with a nice mix
I remember being told in High School that was what separated humans from animals was our ability to create music and art and appreciate it. I'm so happy to see that proved wrong =]
Wow !! She knows that blows and draws make different notes and what an end with a crescendo !! She should be given opportunity to hear some simple folk music, it may encourage her to create her own form.
You ought to get her a bigger harmonica (they're not cheap, but Hohner makes some that have three and four octaves; an elephant really NEEDS something a bit bigger, to allow her some real SCOPE to compose!
So grateful and happy that you are catching on and are celebrating the intelligence and art of animals...how about fostering it a little more and getting a larger harmonica and adhere it to that large post outside, so that you aren't making it so damn hard for the elephant to express itself? The diameter of her trunk is almost more than the size of the tiny harmonica you roped up. Not to mention it's a little difficult to slide a sensitive truck across a rope and not miss the notes.
Who needs an harmonica when you've got a trumpet? Oh well, I suppose there is a strong tradition of inmates playing blues harp when they're behind bars - even innocent ones...
affixing the harmonica to the wall is somewhat restrictive?!? even musicians wear a brace to play vs. sing their music... where can it be better posted for the elephant to play as she would?! i heard this report on NPR today, but its funny that she plays for people yet she also plays when alone... Koodos to this elephant!! i hope she has a better existance b/c she's able to play!!
To most animals, human music falls into that ungraspable, unrecognizable category. With vocal ranges and heart rates very different from ours, they simply aren't wired to appreciate songs tailored for our ears. Most studies find that, try as we might to get their legs thumping, animals generally respond to human music with a total lack of interest. That's why Snowdon has worked with cellist and composer David Teie to compose music that is tailored to suit them.- maybe this is why Shanthi likes to play harmonica because it seems to have a similar pitch to an elephants call source: www.livescience.com/33780-animal-music-pets.html
"Ladies and gentlemen, for my next number I would like to play a little something I've been working on called 'Caged Elephant Blues'. Hope you like it."
The background music is very distracting and annoying and probably wasn't made by elephants. Seriously, why would you choose to run an obnoxious soundtrack behind the subject of your story which is aural?
My crops are watered and my soul is healed thank you shanthi
Lol that elephant is playing the prison blues 😂 all jokes aside though that harmonica playing was pretty sick
They should bring in someone that plays a harmonica and see if the elephant tries to mimic or even jam along with them.

Is it sad an elephant plays the harmonica better than I can?

I want to see more of this, very interesting how good the elephant is.
This is wonderful. I wish all zoos gave all their animals opportunities to experience things they would not experience in the wild!

They should set up one of those old fashioned "One Man Band" things for her with a horn, drum, harmonica and cymbal all attached together. Let her see what she can do with a nice mix

R.I.P Shanti
Shanthi is Indian name... It means "Peace"
Now strap a set of cymbals to her knees

Shanti is content
Asian Elephant, nuff said.
Because it's in a prison, naturally it plays the blues.
It sounds like a train.
whats wrong with the front left leg of that elephant on 2:50?
Play some Lil' Walter
I just heard about this on the news, have you considered playing music in the enclosure so she can learn it?
Did you teach Her that?

Thats awesome..but its too bad they don't have enough space to roam around in like the san diego zo!
she says elephants have no predators as they are large, she forgot about her own species.
When an elephant can play better than you

This sounds like a sad song... of course because she's in cage...
