When I heard Julian's "Woodside Waltz", I couldn't believe how incredible his guitar sounded. Hearing your sunburst of the same model is no exception, so the "gushing" is well-earned on Collings' part. And heck..... you even saved $10K by buying a new Collings instead of an actual 1939 Martin 000-18! Really an amazing guitar and, as always, beautiful playing Tim. Thanks man! :)
Thank you for your review and beautiful playing Tim! I was fortunate to come across a used but mint condition Collings OM1JL in 2019. I have played many amazing dreadnoughts , but never an OM. It took me about a week to get use to the small body, lightweight design, and sensitive response. Fast forward 2 years and I can't seem to keep my hands off this guitar. I think about it when I'm at work or on vacation playing another guitar. I guess this is what love feels like, haha.
Thank you so much for sharing it, dear Tim. You are one of the most sincere and simple people on the planet and you play phenomenal. If someone like Julian chooses a guitar, there definitely has to be a good reason for it. I have never tasted a Colling. I think it's the closest guitar to a piano. It is a pity that they don't have a semi-electric model, since the price of the Collings is not within everyone's reach.
Collings make exceptional guitars. I recently bought a D2H AT which is their dreadnought. I love the additional volume, bottom end and slightly enhanced midrange that this guitar has. The Adirondack top has tremendous dynamic range and headroom. I have played smaller acoustic guitars like OM's and 000-28's in the past. I. recently put some Santa Cruz Parabolic strings on this instrument and they are superb. The gauge is 12.5 through 055. I play fingerstyle and this set is quite manageable and sound awesome!
It's not just the Collings OM's that are really sweet. I stopped by a store one Saturday afternoon and noodled around on a CJ. I ended up leaving with it! I'd never played a flat top acoustic that felt so at home in my hands and sounded so good when played fingerstyle. Collings really has the recipe right.
Thanks so much for this! Great playing and a fascinating overview. But even better: I have a gorgeous Waterloo Stella Deluxe that I love. But it has been a little 'tough' to play. I took your idea and tuned it down to Eb and wow! I get a slightly deeper tone and easier to play! So thank you Tim!
Would liked to have heard the rest of Darn That Dream. I have a very similar guitar, but probably not as dear as this one, a Simon & Patrick Woodland Pro Folk. Something about that body shape makes it a slept on jazzy masterpiece. Love the Satin finish.
Beautiful playing and tone Tim, the more it goes the more I prefer flattops to solid archtops for strictly acoustic playing, if only because of the range of choices, but also the tone is just as good if not better to my ears... I wonder what others think.
I have a OM1Gss (short scale) that has been mostly just hanging on my wall since my daughter was born. I now will replace strings and dust her off. Collings make some wonderful guitars.
I'm late to the party Tim. Awesome guitar. Just curious why you went with Sitka top over Adi? They're both of course incredible tone woods top. I'm just curious as a player why you went with Sitka? thank you!!! btw: color and your playing is as usual beautiful!
Great to listen to a serious jazz player like you with an acoustic guitar, and even better playing a great Collings! How about putting a 0.13 E string to get a thicker sound?
Great review. Looking at a good acoustic guitar. Since I lost my hearing and got a cochlear implant my electric ones are a challenge except my Epiphone Pre Joe Pass Emperor. Now if the budget could allow it. Your playing make anything sound excellent. Thank you Tim.
After the Sterling and Shure, what is your recording chain? You sure sound wonderful on it! Any chance of a flattop jazz album?!?!
Thank you for this superb demo. Your enthusiasm and rich musical expression shines through your description of this guitar and your beautiful playing.

I enjoyed watching you gush with joy with your new instrument. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Dan from ‘That Pedal Show’ mentioned you, and I’m glad I looked you up. Excellent content, good sir. Subbed.
Darn that Dream reminded me of listening to the Jim Hall Trio live record a ton. I transcribed Angel Eyes off of that in school.

Such an understated guitar, love it!

I figured that the Sitka might be a bit more conducive to a light touch .
@TimLerchGuitar thank you Tim! That really is very intersesting to me. Appreciate the info! Gorgeous guitar on every way! Congrats!
Sounds like Julian has done a fine job! Great playing as usual.

Beautiful
Very articulate, and projects well when you play this OMJL. Almost archtop territory. 🎧
I have one on order…..waiting………

Thank you Tim.
Lovely review Tim, and gorgeous, resonant and rich tone. I wonder what gauge the D'addario nickel/bronze strings might be?
12-53
Great review. Still loving this guitar a year later?
I still love it!
Maybe a weird question but does that have a truss rod? Sounds great
Yes I think it does

Gid bless ya Tim.
What was the difference between Adirondack and Sitka spruce that determined your choice for Sitka spruce? 🎧
I have a lighter touch and figured the Sitka would be a better choice for my right hand approach.
Great classe i like guitar try on acústico i ve played classical before 🙏🙏
Amazing
[dear sir, is it Adirondack top or a spruce top?
Sitka

My left wrist can't handle a 1 & 3/4" nut... and it drives me nuts that most of the guitar industry has drunk the 1&3/4" Kool Aid!!!
I can't handle anything narrower on an acoustic - fat finger pads.
