Ibanez "Upswing" UB804 Upright Bass featuring Keisuke Torigoe

- The UB804 or “Upswing”, is Ibanez’s very first electric upright bass. The special AeroSilk Piezo pickup, along with the Walnut, Maple, and Jatoboa woods, combine to create a tone that is incredibly warm and true to the voicing of an acoustic upright bass.

I just bought one. IMHO it's an amazing instrument. The fact that it doesn't try to be a traditional upright is why I love it. It has the ergonomics (and bow-ability) of an upright with the sound like an electric fretless.
Sooooo... I was thinking if you could hold this like a normal bass, or maybe atach a strap to it and play it standing up... you know... just to be that guy
@@UUDDLRLRBASelectStart Yes! I recently had it re-setup with a low B [B-E-A-D]. It's a lot of fun to play. The Ampeg SCR-DI with a bit of the scrambler dialed in really highlights the lovely harmonic growl of this instrument. It's silky and badass at the same time.
@@LjubomirGorscak You could also tune it like a Cello an Octave lower by using 5ths Tuned Omni Bass Strings
So are those metal strings used on bass guitars?
@@ozibala They're flatwound strings
this is _funky_ with _italics!_
almost identical to the NS bass. My biggest problem with this style of EUB is there is nothing to press against your body like a real upright, so the thing just wobbles around while you play.
Absolutely! It's hard to play something that's moving around.
There might be an add-on to the body, like the Staff or Dean Pace Contra?
Excellent obsevation about most EUBs not having the bulk of a real upright. It can definitive affect your playing technique...
if you actually watched the video you would have noticed it was being held up by something so wobbling would be a non existent factor in playing technique
@@ubiquityphantom6354 if you actually watched the video you would have noticed the bass wobbling everywhere. thanks for playing though!
Oh my god I'd kill for one of these it sounds amazing
This is bass is definitely upright, and definitely electric. Unfortunately there is nothing I'm hearing tonewise that reminds me of an acoustic double bass.
The electric guitar sounds nothing like an acoustic guitar. An electric bass guitar sounds nothing like an acoustic bass guitar. It would only make sense for the electric bass to have a different sound than the acoustic upright bass.
Captain obvious to the rescue!
@@awllypollyas8292 Yeah.... that's the problem.
If we have an upright bass... we'd want it to sound like an upright acoustic bass. Otherwise why wouldn't we just have a normal electric bass (Fretted and unfretted models are sold for your preference)
This just seems like a gimmick than anything else. A normal upright bass with a pickup is preferable for most people if they need electronic amplification.
@@royalcat10 Except that an acoustic double bass is a real pain to store and transport. I played one of these this morning through a Fender rumble bass combo on both channels and it sounded fine to me. Not exactly like an acoustic instrument, but not the same as a fretless electric bass guitar either, it has it's place, which may not be where you want it to be.
@@mattblack156 That's what people like about electric uprights but it'd be great to get very close to the acoustic sound with a pickup without having to buyan acoustic upright and have to lug the massive instrument everywhere. It's why I was considering an electric since I don't have much more room in my house for bigger instruments but electrics just don't have the sound
That thing makes a beautiful sound!
It reminds me of when Robocop wakes up and he has no body he's just a head and some organs
I've been waiting for this to come out. But jeez...
Just picked one up. It's a great instrument. I like the similarities between Ibanez's UB804 and SR700 fretless. Same bridge pickups and with the same strings both are powerhouse instruments. I'm just learning the upright, and am blown away by Torigoe-san's chops in this clip. Great playing Keisuke and great instrument Ibanez!
Gorgeous bass sound! Wow! ♥️✨Ridiculously good with the bow and the reverb added🫶
I bought one two days ago. I love it. The sound on this video doesn't do it justice as he's playing it in its upper register and not demonstrating it as a bass. It has a sound somewhere between an electric fretless bass guitar and a double bass - more resonant, with a "woodier" sound, than a bass guitar. The big advantage of this over an acoustic double bass, or even other electric uprights, is that I can get it in the back of my Ford Ka!
No more straining your back with a Double Bass in the case
Is a ford Ka a model or are you from Boston?
@@jed_shred_guitars The “Ka” is the smallest model of Ford you can get in the UK. Though now I have a different car. It’s slightly bigger but I still can’t fit an acoustic double bass in it.
@@mikenash7049 Yes and the UB804 is way easier to carry because it's basically half the size of a Double Bass. It takes Standard Long Scale Bass Guitar Strings (Like XT coated Strings) which is the biggest advantage.
Ibanez... Always giving me a brand new reason to be alive
Ibanez Guitar Round wounds respond well to my bow so Round wounds will work. I was jamming on your BTB747 7 String Electric Bass Guitar an I played Whitney Huston's version of our National Anthem on it with a Pick through distortion and it rocked so 7 String version coming soon.
For those complaining about the tone just put a foam "mute" under the strings and mess with the amps eq a bit and youl get the same feel as a proper upright
well done congrats have a drink to u for sure might even get one of these this year maybe something a little different
Great job on the upright there Jaco my question is.. does it Doom?
Put it through a Big Muff, tune it down to drop C or something, and bow the hell out of the low string, see if it dooms!
Awesome !!!! love it ! now about the right price !
mine will be in Friday!!
Watch out all of you guys, i just got one of these to practice, and what a huge deception :
PROPORTIONS OF THE NECK AREN'T LIKE A REAL UPRIGHT BASS ! The neck is much smaller (almost 20cm for from 2 same notes compared to a real one), so you will have te relearn all positions. This is a fake call to name it an "upright bass" . Don't buy this thinking it is an upright bass,it is absolutely not.
Ibanez Guitar Can you please make me a 5 String Version?
Are you really going to lose so much on a four string. As Jaco used to say “if you can’t play four - you don’t need more” (ie people who haven’t fully explored four strings jump to 5/6/7/8 strong bass)
@@CarlChristensen64 I'm not going to loose so much, I'm going to get more range
@@RockStarOscarStern634 that b string tho.. with no downtuning
@@vannjunkin8041 Actually the Low B String isn't floppy at all. On a 5 String Upright Bass it's going to be rather tight.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 agree it is not floppy at all I've had a few
34" scale, 42mm nut-----so it should be a fairly easy transition from fretless bass guitar. I am interested!
Amazing ....
i like the sound
rooftop90 it's not necessarily a bad sound but it doesn’t sound like an actual upright bass because it lacks a bass end to its tone
cool sound
Wow.
Um, what? I just got exited.
Love it!
I need a bass like this for my Celtic Metal band!
Very nice.
Sounds so great ! Really good demo!!
There's a 5 string version called UB805
I believe this exists now
@@alousypeach The UB805
@@RockStarOscarStern634I really wish I waited just a bit longer before getting mine
that was fucking incredible!
Brilliant !
Gotsa try this one!!! Hopes are high. Very 😎
Great playing bro!
鳥越啓介さん!
Muito lindo. ❤️
Very beautiful
鳥越さんめっちゃ格好良い。特にボウイング!
Does it only come with a German bow? I'm a French bow student... Never could enjoy those german bows...
It doesn't come with a bow. The guy doing the demo was just showing what it can do
Is it the very low height of the strings and the type of strings ?
I think Upright Bassists would love it if only they could find the D Harmonic on the G String more easily. It should have 3 dots.
Can you make it sound like a real bass too?
What would be the best kind of bow to get for this?
It depends. Traditionally bassists play German grip (underhand) bows. Though a there are people (usually cellists who switched to double bass) who play French grip (over hand). The guy in the video is using German. I learned German and prefer it. I feel German let’s you dig in more.
Pernambuco wood bows are good for beginners. They sound good and won’t break the bank. More expensive bows cost multiple thousands of dollars.
Lemur music ships everywhere and has really great bows. Don’t forget to buy rosin too. Kolstein bass rosin is great all round rosin.
Ibanez Guitar Can't you use Round Wound Electric Strings?
you could, but it definitely wouldn't respond well to a bow...
@@ts4gv Actually my round wound strings on my bass respond super well to my bow because the rosin is super sticky.
Ok so this bass can sound like a synth and electric violin….. but the question still remains, can it sound like a bass?
I just got one and the strings it comes with are awful. What should I go with? Was going to throw my go-to d'addario heavys on it but want a second opinion
I'd like to ask to check by large monitor on making of the sounds.
The bottom is too heavy.
I bet you could EQ it to sound pretty damn close to an upright bass
Ibanez Guitar Why not a 6 String Version? Your 7 String Bass Guitars sounded good when I played them so let's make a 7 String Version too.
OMG
Can anyone tell me what this tune is?
What bow are you using ??? Mine doesnt seem to work its a bass hair german
David Blais I also use a German and it works just fine for me
@@osmi2125 found out the problem.....first time player and the salespeople never mentioned putting rosin on the bow :s noob move
男前やな
Haha okay I put on my earphones. It does sound horrible. Like a synth. And it’s so thin it sounds more like a cello.
Tried almost everything, only the Yamaha Silent bass sounded closest to the real deal, not even NS design.
I say for the price, Ibanez sounded and played good and have its place. If you are a fretless player only, Takamine ones sounded better.
No brasil vai custar uns 15 mil reais
Ou até mais amigo .
I just wish there was a way to get around the weird piezo tone
Sounds great and I definitely need one, but the player is out of tune most of the time. The double stops are really annoying.
It's a great instrument but I don't really care for this sound, I don't like the distortion / clipping, it sounds really garage / trashy.
Cómo se puede tocar con arco si ese contrabajo no tiene puente … o si se puede solo que es más difícil de ejecutar 🤷🏻♂️
too bad that with the bow we don't get to hear the E and A strings with clean sound...
Why use a fuzz with it???
An Ukulele bass doubd more like an acoustic upright than this, this is an upright fretless which is fine to bow
Sounds ok not great and I see potential problems with this thing. No bridge to support bowing. Kinda moronic to put in a bass guitar type bridge rather than a true bridge. The fingerboard looks quite porous that with use will be become difficult to play.
Yep, first thing that clashed was the weird bridge choice. I guess they created the curvature/radius on the body itself. I don't have positive feelings about it, would have to check it in person and play. I do love Ibanez though, they brake my heart doing weird stuff like that lol
Well, it obviously does have the correct radius. What's yer problem??
Yaaaayyy another thin, plastic sounding electric upright bass! Exactly what the bass community needs :D :D :D! -_-...... Also I do not get how the video got off the editing room sounding like that.
Μike have to agree with you, no body to the sound at all. Shame, I was quite excited when they announced this.
Listening on headphones, it doesn't sound thin or plastic at all. Ibanez will sell a ton of these if the price is right.
G I was listening through speakers and it sounds horrible, difference of opinion I guess. Just like the NS the piezo system is very lackluster to my ears
I agree on it not sounding great in this video, but thre are other demos where it sounds very good. Having an affordable electric double bass that doesn´t look as cheap as the NS Design competition is great news in my opinion. And I trust Ibanez with quality when it comes to basses.
It really doesn't sound good bowed, still yet to find an electric upright that does
I never can understand why demos of instruments anymore are really just showcases for the dude playing them. I don't want to hear your looper pedal; I don't want to see all your mad skills; I just want a demo of the basses settings with a different playing styles.
Russell Griffith so you care about playing styles? Dude
Agree. The guy didn't play a single long note, didn't vary light to heavy touch. And should have changed some EQ to see thow the bass responds. I love Ibanez but this review sucks.
It’s a promotional clip, not a video review. It’s a commercial.
So damn true lol. Just what we all wanted to see a tremolo staccato solo virtuoso ..
@@toady460 Even more reason to present the instrument it its best light. This was awful...
Get a load of people in the comments with ZERO imagination.
It sounds like a double bass with a head cold
Get a better player for your next demo. I was having a really hard time telling whether the sound was any good because the player couldn't stay in tune, and he kept making the bass squeal with the bow
When he played with his hands it kinda sounded like QOTSA
Nice playing. Disappointing sound.
Great playing , but it sounds just like my fretless , want something to sound like a double bass
sorry, this does not even come close to the sound of an upright bass- there are other brands which do, but at a far heftier price..
love a demo thats out of tune :)
Cool instrument (I want one), but it sounds nothing like an acoustic upright. Kindly stop trying to gaslight us with marketing BS, Ibanez.
