How to make Ibanez UB804 sound (more) upright? (ENG SUBS)

- Full tutorial on my concept of "bit more upright"/EUB sound with the Ibanez Upswing Bass. I'm not an upright player, and on this video I'm playing the instrument for three months (having played fretless bass guitar for six years), but it's fun!
Gear used:
Ibanez UB804 vertical bass
Thomastik JF344 bass strings
Zoom B6 Multi-effect
cheap 3/4 Gewa bow
cheap Ashdown Practice Combo (line-in only, preamp ommited)
Hidersine bass rosin

Really interesting and very well made! Thanks for the english text !
You are welcome :) Thank you!
Most of the sound comes from the hollow body and the scale length of the strings. If you want an electric upright bass that sounds like an upright, get a Yamaha SLB 300. Also, pluck with the side of your fingers to make the sound beefier.
I agree - that's why I state "more like upright", not "upright". Thanks for your input!
Hello,
In my case, I have an Ibanez UB805 and I'm looking for strings to get that sound.
Do you think I should use the 5-string Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flat Wound Bass Strings?
I was also considering the Rotosound RS885LD Tru Bass 88s.
Are both good alternatives?
What would you suggest?
Beautifully produced. Thanks so much for the subtitling! I just bought one of these instruments, and getting an upright bass tone is a goal for me. I have a Zoom A3 which I will try for the modeling. I don't know about the term "IR" refers to though. I assume it's something like what the A3 does.
Glad to hear that! IR stands for "impulse response" and it's a short aural information which emulates the acoustic response of bass cabinet or instrument's body. Zoom B6, Helix and many modern processors have the capability of loading custom IR's. There are also cheap, single IR loading stompboxes by Flamma (FS07), Nux or Mooer on the market.
@@WladekFoltynski So I guess the Zoom A3 does a similar thing, but with acoustic guitars (and acoustic bass). You can dial in modeling for all kinds of acoustic guitars. I'll try the URB model patch with the UB804 when it's back from the shop. Perhaps I'll have some success. Thanks again.
The right hand is key. It helps to play with the plucking finger ALONG the string - not across it, like when playing a bass guitar.
I tried Thomastik Jazz strings on my UB804, and they don't work for me, IMO they are great for electric basses, but are too floopy for an EUB, just my 2 cents.
Great video, though

In the closing clip (black and white), I see that you added some dots to the fingerboard.
I see there are some markings on the side of the neck?
Do the markings between the E and A strings help?
Omni Bass strings should do the trick
A ta 6 to Maruszczyk? Jaka specyfikacja?
@@WladekFoltynski Cool! A jakie masz tam drewno?
@@iksajotien kiedyś szukałem - teraz szukam bardziej "swojego" brzmienia, stąd kostka i dwa włączone pickupy. Drewno to mahoń i buckeye burl.
@@WladekFoltynski Brzmi świetnie!
How about the tone knob at the ub804 itself? How boost or flat did u set it at?
Great
Thanks much!!
Glad to hear that! You are welcome!
The Thomastik Strings are a bit thinner than the D'addario. But both strings are Flatwound w/ a Steel Core.
Hey! Thanks for the comment. They are different in sound, feel and tension: D'Addario's are flattened steel on steel, Thomastiks are flattened nickel on steel. Worlds apart.
@@WladekFoltynski Both strings have a steel core. How about the Omni Bass Strings? They're kinda in between Double Bass Strings & Bass Guitar Strings. They have a Stranded Steel Core so the tension is even lower.
Thanks, great video! I think I'll get, the 5-string, though 🙂
Więcej filmów o ustawianiu brzmienia dla bezprogowców porszę :)
Coś będzie jeszcze w lutym :)
I have an SLB 300, which is great for travelling, however a better way to go is getting a Neville whitehead SASE (semi acoustic stand upright electric) bass I have a four string and five string from him, both are outstanding!! Other than a full on double bass you can’t go past either of these manufacturers.
A foam mute helps too
Man you can also sound like guitar with the other bass
Haha - good point! Playing 6-string bass with a pick is a serious non-orthodoxy situation!
