Built an 11.0:1 446 with an UltraDyne solid roller, 290 seat, 265@.050, .630 lift tight lash. Used Morrel roller lifters and ran it on the street in the Memphis area for years. Build it right, tune it right, have fun. I know yall will get it worked out 😊
I enjoy watching both of you. I'm working on a 396 stroker now to be a 434 big block. I like how you guys mentioned the steel head gaskets for the quench I will be .040 with the pistons and rods I'm using for my kit. Thank you again and keep posting.
I remember back when id just coat both sides of the gaskets with plain ol 10w30w back before we had fancy MLS headgaskets,……was i the only one doin this or were there any others??…..i actually learned it from a old ford buddy
I won't use a long water pump on a small block or a big block. Case in point was my friends L--78, 69 Nova with a Muncie 4 speed. No matter what we did, when the engine was spun to red line in first gear, the alternator belt was thrown off. I tried every style of belt that Gates made at the time and got the same result. The pulleys were in perfect alignment and nothing was loose. A friend of mine with tons of experience gave me the answer. He was a super enthusiast, engine builder and a Chevy flat rate mechanic for Ashley Chevrolet in Baltimore, MD and he only worked on engines, manual transmissions and rears. In 1968, Chevy switched to larger mains on the small block and placed long water pumps on small blocks and big blocks. He told me to get the earlier brackets and a short water pump. It meant the alternator had to be moved to the opposite side and get the proper brackets, belt, pump and pulleys from a 65-67 big block. The alternator wires were longer than needed to make the swap and it only took me maybe 2 hours to complete. When finished, it never threw another belt. I do not know the physics behind what the long pump was causing, such as vibration, harmonics, flexing or whatever. All the belts are farther away from the block. All I know is that Willy Geelhaar knew something many don;t and he steered me in the right direction. He was the fastest mechanic I have ever known and never had a comeback because of his work. If you have belt issues and cannot solve them, keep this in mind.
1970-1978 was the ugly chrysler blue. some of us called it boat anchor blue. turquoise blue is the color pre 1969 for plymouth. they called the older plymouth engines comando was standard super comando was the higher performance. the dodge used the hemi orange paint and were called the magnum series.the early chrysler big blocks were called tnt on a pie tin on the air cleaner. hope these quotes help. happy new year to you guys. how much snow do you have up over yonder we dont have much but a dusting. stay warm.
What a great New Year's gift. Thank you Allan and thank you Bill. Graduate-level engineering stuff, except they don't teach it in any formal schools. Happy 2025 to all.
That LS is very similar to the one i have in my nova thats in my lil picture next to my name, just mine is a 408” its a holley system car as well and it is great…also ran a holley system on the LS in my ‘73 c10 shortwide bed that truck has a centrifugal and 6.0 though….those terminator X systems are really simple even for us old guys to figure out….on my sons ‘67 mustang i went with a ACE’s killshot TBI efi system and it is really great despite what others think of the aces system….alot of the problems with aftermarket EFI is self inflicted and 98.3% user error……once you do one its like riding a bike and each other one gets that much easier up untill your pretty much able to walk someone else thru it because its all common sense…..which most of us older folks have considering were still around enjoying this terrific time in automotive performance
Hylomar spray, who makes Howard's lifters Johnson? there are two johnson get the one that supplies Crower, Isky and I think Jones... Iskytool tm I have one set of Erson 1.75 rockers left, some work to install especially with 3/8 pushrods, (the dies are gone) Happy new year
Thanks -- Al for another good video ----- Make sure to say Thanks to Bill for showing what's going on in his shop ------ If you have the time ---- it would ----- REALLY ----- be nice to see that 440 start-up Saturday ------ Sure sounds like Bill has had to change the configuration of that motor ---- hope it was worth the work ----- If you can be there ---- would be nice to hear that thing fire off ---- A good tip from Bill there -----That 1094 Head gasket from Carquest for twelve dollars ---- will have to remember that ----- Thanks again ---- Hope you have a good weekend ------- Rodney
Pontiacs sold fore Canadian market in the 60's and 70's almost all had Chevy engines, Small and big block, So seeing 427 engines in Full size cars in Canada was ver common.
Sorry I stand corrected he placed 14th w a score of 2659 or 636hp and 614 Tq, It is under SKMFX engines, there was also a 436 Small block mopar under the name of Robinson, I thought that was him. My mistake.
The factory Victor 440 heads have been able to produce 710 Horsepower. by C.C. magazine when first production of then 2008. on 466 11.0;1 huge camshaft and SV intake. i would not bother buying custom heads best bet is a stroked 400 block for 500 plus inches . I beleive they have made over 800 hp . by Simspsons speed shop youtube channel not custom. also T.F.S. Max Wedge ports . use off the shelf camshaft and over .600 lft for the street short duration 0.50 245+-
Why in the world would anyone want to keep "smog heads" in a SBC re-build? He's gotta do what the customer asks but in my experience those heads are JUNK and they have no place on any engine today. Expecting 360HP out of an engine wearing them is pretty optimistic. If I'm wrong and the build up can get to 360HP you probably have enough in the short block to see well north of 400HP by simply using virtually any other head that is commonly available. Yup, those heads are garbage and they are indeed...... THAT BAD. Meanwhile....how cool is the idea of 427 Chevy as ORIGINAL to a Pontiac? I've never seen an example. I'd love to know what model it came out of. Back in the day I remember a couple of early model Trans Ams and GTOs in my area of Southern Ontario with Big Block Chevy swaps but they were "swaps". They weren't build that way at the factory. I'm betting the buyer of a new Pontiac performance car wanted a Pontiac engine so this "strike related" odd ball was never gonna happen. Yet, a Catalina or Bonneville buyer probably wouldn't have cared as long as his car had at least similar performance to what he expected from a car with Big Block Pontiac.
id never in a zillion years ever run any of that made in mexico stuff for anything making power ! its rockwell hardness is like a stick of butter its really sad how poor that metal is !

Thanks AG. Always something interesting at Bill's shop.
You older guys have a lot of knowledge . i'm a older guy and have a lot of respect for you
Always a great visit and thank you for another fun video!!!
Al & especially Mr Bill- Thanks for the interesting tour and a look at life as an engine builder!
I have a 440 in my 73 Challenger, I would love to see that dyno test.
Loved the video AG!! Great content!👍👍👍
Good show, always good to see Bill.👍👍👍

I’m with Bill in using Hylomar spray on the steel shim head gaskets. I use it regardless if the heads or deck have been decked. 👍🇦🇺

Thanks for the info, much appreciated 🙂
good story on that ol pontiac!

There used to be General Motors Institute of Technology and Chrysler Institute of Technology...
I really enjoyed this vid
Love to see the mopar on the dyno😊

Thanks Trent, you have a very nice Nova.AG
That lsa on the 414 is gonna make nasty torque and hp with ls3 heads

Morel makes Howards lifters.

Thanks Vintage, Alex and I are planning to video the dyno tomorrow. AG
Do ya think worn lifter bores r contributing to a lot of the solid lift failures?

That LS would’ve done the job fine for crawling without the blower.
Good stuff to know.
Mopar muscle!!
👍🏁🇺🇸
440’s strong runners. 69 six barrel with 4.10 gear a purple shaft will run high 11’s.
Key to that head is not cfm, that port shape has some velocity I would bet on it.
Can't run needle bearing lifters on the street.. I learn something new everyday!
If it's a solid lifer it's not a good idea.
Bill mentioned Carquest shim head gasket.. What part number ? Thanks
Bill, can you respond to this please? AG
740 should be easy on that ls.
Why can't you run a needle bearing roller on the street?
218/224 108lsa ? And you said 350hp with emissions heads on engine dyno so minus 100 for 250hp wheel ?
Someone is blowing smoke up your skirt, in 14 Robinson had a 436 in small block in the EMC and it only placed 19th.
So tell me where these were from please,
@@billlittle4285 They may have been from Robinson , but they were not on a 14 EMC entry. Look it up?
Sorry I stand corrected he placed 14th w a score of 2659 or 636hp and 614 Tq, It is under SKMFX engines, there was also a 436 Small block mopar under the name of Robinson, I thought that was him. My mistake.
That guy in the background not know you're making a video?
He's a curious customer, I'm not going to kick him out lol
I eould use 270 trickflow heads and never trust those heads
That Mopar is sketchy.

Super Stock racers that win, have raised ports. My Pontiac runs 9.90 stock port volume and turning 8800, with a Qjet 😎
