Gemma, the prison, blues music, you played while cleaning that metal bracket seemed extremely appropriate! And Simon, it’s said there are two types of fools in this world. Those that loan tools, and those that return them!😂

A Captain on a wooden sailboat in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, would liberally scatter rock salt, used for deicing roads and sidewalks etc., over the wooden decks when it would rain. The fresh water would then be turned into salt-ish water and not be so hard on the wood. Perhaps you could entertain something similar?

The orange mallet is a dead blow made of a soft material and vulnerable to damage from using it on sharp metal objects such as bolts. Using the mallet on wood is ideal. I've been using them for years used properly they are great. Love your boat project.

I grew up in the country. When the rainy season hit, the bridges over the creeks would wash away. The locals would hop on tractors and go look for them. We finally chained them to anchors so they wouldn’t go that far

The glue takes hours to dry so if the bolts are installed while glue is still wet it doesn’t matter. Then tighten the bolts and glue will dry by the next day and everything is glued and screwed together making a strong joint.

You could do with a pressure washer grit adapter to aqua-blast rusty metal. After that, a soak in phosphoric acid will stop any flash rust and hidden pits causing trouble.
Unlike dry angle grinding, minimal health risk and working outside = easy clean-up.

When I've done restoration projects involving cleaning rust from metal parts,I've always then had them hot dipped galvanised. That makes them absolutely bombproof against further corrosion. Where needed to paint to match other parts,I've used an etch primer followed by the paint colour-but it's the galvanising that provides the massive long term protection.

I truly appreciate all your skill and hard work. Please buy a very efficient diesel or gas generator. U will never finish this work without enough power to run your tools. What is the sense of running tools on batteries if you are going to run the ship on its original motor which has no emissions whatsoever and will overwhelm what ever clean energy you used within the first hour or two of it running. You see none of this makes sense and you are not accomplishing anything - climate wise.

In the 1950s, that stretch of coast near the road you drive down to the sea used to be a lovely sandy beach that we children played on for hours. Aged eight, started to sail out into the Estuary from that exact location of the boat yard when it stored the Dee Sailing Club dingys. Now it is all silted like at Parkgate but at least the tide still comes in.

When, and if, you have a few minutes to spare and four pieces of plywood to spare...
Cut the layer to the shape of your boots +3-5 cm. Take some rope to make them fit as an extra layer under your boots.
And you will have a moving platform to walk on the mud..

Why not build a frame shelter around the top of the ship wityh polyethylene film ( 4-6mil thick) covering. It will help keep the wind and rain out of the ship. It doesn't have to be perfectly dried in... just enough to make it more comfortable to do work.

Enjoying your stuff... but please, at the one minute mark Gemma puts her hand a bit near the table saw blade. Getting a bit to casual with a saw blade is a invitation to disaster as over 30,000 people find out in the USA each year.

Visegrips for 13th birthday, thats not bad.
In the mid 70's when I turned 1, i got a shotgun and a chainsaw.
Got to get firewood and something to eat.
Gorwin up in the bay was a lot different that town or city.
At 13, you were no longer a boy, almost a young man, treated as such, and expected to do the work for your size.
Never ever loan out tools, not even o family, they can bring what they fixed or buy their own tools.

I'm not sure if this has been thought of before...you could make Jemma a nice little flip down step/stool platform for her to stand on when she's working at the bench...just a thought😊

Are you sure those folded steel braces are good enough to reuse? That was a lot of rust for something with the load they have on them, they look to have lost 50% of their thickness. If I were to reuse them, I'd be doing a more complete job of rust removal, a bath in molasses/water mix for a couple of weeks will remove all the rust entirely. I'd then be using a two-part epoxy anti-corrosion coating designed for a marine environment, not spray cans. Those are going to rust again.
More importantly, a P2 mask is not really enough for all that iron oxide dust, it's terrible for your lungs. The fact you have the rust dust around where the edge of the mask sits shows you are drawing it in, past the edges of your mask and breathing it in.

Gemma. Please tie your hair up tight while you're grinding. You're running a risk of getting scalped if you're not careful. I think we'd all prefer you stay as intact as possible. Sarinda ain't gonna paint herself and who's gonna keep Simon in line if you're not there?

Please don't take this as a criticism but if that grey paint you spray onto the metal pieces is just cold galvanising then they will need a rust convertor on first. Although they have 95% of the rust removed the remaining 5% of the rust will flourish under the paint. I remain impressed with your level of dedication and quality of work going into this project, keep at it team!
