@@Underdrummer Oh, so don't bother wasting time watching the video, just read your answer in the description. Got it! It just seems counter intuitive, I "watched" the video to get the answer I needed when I should have "read" the description. I am sure everyone reads the description on videos before watching them. Obviously! 🙃
@@devinthunderstrike If you don't have time to read the description and put in a little work yourself that's a YOU problem. How much did you pay for the 6 hours I invested in making this video? Argh, the audacity!
Thanks a lot. This is something that I've wanted to do for quite some time. You've made this process much more simple than what I had originally imagined.
This was INCREDIBLY helpful! Thank you for the video. So much easier than trying to scrub through and visionally spot the chapter breaks like I was doing. :-D
Thank you so much for the video! I've tried using Audacity to split before but could never get it to work properly. This made it seem easy. Now, I just need to chunk down a couple of 30-ish hour audiobooks I have left in the series to which I'm currently listening (going to try for hour long "Chapters").
39kelevra, you're welcome! Hour long is a good length. Which may include several actual chapters. I had to do plenty of reading and planning to create this tutorial. You are right, it is not very user-friendly but the price of Audacity is nice. Glad to hear this helped you out and thank you for taking the time to comment. Happy listening!
Hi! Hoping you’ll see this. I’m using the most current version of Audacity (as of Nov 2021), and I cannot find Silence Finder anywhere…is it called something else now? 🤔 Also, I wouldn’t want to split into chapters until I’ve edited all of it and gotten it to pass ACX check, correct? I’m working on editing the 6-hour audiobook version of my recently published first book - and I’m rather in over my head 🥴😆
Words of this Life, in my video description lives this: If You Don't Have Silence Finder as Option Under Analyze Choose Edit, then Preferences, choose Effects on the left. Make sure "Nyquist" is checked, click OK then restart Audacity. If that does not help, reinstall Audacity
Words of this Life, you know more about this than I do it appears because I do not know what an ACX check is. But if it has to do with sound quality then I would say yes. Do all that before splitting up your audio into chapters. Best of luck with your audio book.
@@Underdrummer Ah, ACX is the platform used to record audiobooks for Audible. So there are requirements that have to be met for it to be acceptable. It’s still over my head but I’m getting there lol. Thanks again.
Nicky Alan - The Bedroom Guru, Edit > Preferences, choose Effects on the left, put a check (tick) in "Nyquist", click OK then restart Audacity. If that does not help, reinstall Audacity from, audacityteam.org/download/windows
@@Underdrummer I was trying to split a book into chapters, but then I figured out after that I didn't really need to use audacity to do it afterall. I have OpenAudible and I was able to have that software do it all for me automatically. But it's a good tutorial you have that I may need to use in the future if I want to edit music and other sound files. I know someone who will be using your tutorial here soon. Thank you!
Sir Galahad, I don't see an 'Import Multiple' option but that doesn't mean a similar option doesn't exist in Audacity. Just as a test, I imported 4 audio tracks. Audacity imports these as 4 separate tracks. I then copied the 2nd track and pasted at the end of the first track. Repeated this for tracks #3 and #4 to create one long audio file. The reverse of my video. Let me know if you find a better solution. I'm sure there is one. Audacity is a great, free program but with quite a bit of a learning curve. Thanks for watching and sharing.
@@Underdrummer Wow thanks. I have 22 hours of audio (a friend ask me to narrate a book). Audacity is amazing. He's putting it on Amazon, but I was thinking about producing a copy local for my own use.
Thanks for the very helpful video Underdrummer! Is there a way to delete multiple labels quickly (selecting multiple labels and then deleting them at once), or do you have to do each and every one manually?
After breaking up the file and you're ready to export. If the original is mp3, do you still need the LAME program to export as mp3? Or does it export the original as it was with editing. Thanks for the great video btw.
Hi some guy, you are welcome. I believe you will still need the lame.dll in order to export as MP3 regardless of file format of original. Hope this helps and thanks for taking some time to comment.
coda creator, sure you can do that if you are making your own recording and then adding chapters to it. My issue was adding chapters to a file that had already been recorded somewhere else.

Or, while recording, set a certain number of seconds of silence between chapters that is longer than pauses, deliberately.
