  • In this 4th video of the series I continue processing the material from my stock pot to recover any gold and platinum group metals it may contain. I get a fair amount of palladium in this video, plus few surprises along the way. Watch and see. Please visit the Urban Gold Mining section of my web site at mdpub.com/UrbanGoldMining/ for more information.

If you still have that residue that you suspect was silver chloride, pour some ammonia on it and see if it dissolves. Silver chloride is soluble in ammonia.

Take a sample of the green crystals and test them with stannous . If they are PGM salts they will react accordingly.

I love those foreshadowing notes XD They add so much to your videos!
I think sreetips had in one of his videos information that depending on the composition of the mixture, the nitric boil can drag platinum a bit even without aqua regia.
Your videos are so relaxing. Great watch!

at 00:42:15 I'm pretty sure that's a hexachloroiridate salt; I tried dissolving iridium with poor man's aqua regia (potassium nitrate instead of nitric acid) and ended up with a similar compound in the past.

To be honest, I wouldn't waste any more resources on that 2nd solution. As you said there is not much concentration of any precious metals, and the crystals are probably mostly ammonium chloride, you can put it all back in the stock pot. Save the palladium filter paper till you have more. Important thing was you got the gold out. 👍

yep like i said in the last part i would of used pure zinc with all of your liquids then all of your PGM'S would of dropped out as a black powder then you could of done nitric treatments till nothing goes into solution that way you would of separated the Palladium from the platinum
also, streetips is very useful to watch when it comes to his stock pot he is very informative

I really do not know the theory very well; but looking at a reactivity series chart i would have thought zinc would also precipitate iron, cadmium, bismuth, copper etc. as well (assuming such are present. like I said 100% tyro talking. 😁😀

      Id keep testing.
Confirm copper with ammonia in the spotplate.
Maybe rehydrate the crystals, cement on zinc or aluminium. Clean up with hydrochloric, Get it back in solution and do some tests.
Im totally winging it, but noone else has said anything yet so here is my two cents, and you're kinda winging it too, just with style. And more knowledge. And practical experience.
      Ha.
      Good luck man.
Maybe dont expect a yield this time, just lessons.
And probably dont expect to separate the PGMs individually this time round.
Im not doubting you, for the record.
Im glad you shut that fume hood door as quick as you did during the boilover.
To set aside the palladium precipitate until you accumulate more, or continue with a learning experience is another question.
I hope you're mostly enjoying the experience whatever you choose.

Iv had a bit of luck lately, maybe that was the universe rebalancing.
I dont mean to condescend but be careful, whatever you do. You know the dangers.
Somewhere Ammonium Chloride comes into play, unless youre substituting and i just dont have the knowledge to see it. Though i think that is for the separation of the PGMs.
