Tori, I don't know if you realize what a wonderful thing you have done for people like me who have loved Karen and her voice for close to 50 years. I never thought I would ever hear another angelic voice like Karen's again except for listening to Carpenter's albums and her recordings online. And then you came along. I don't think that life contains enough special and meaningful moments. But your voice is definitely an exception. Thank you.

There will never be another Karen Carpenter. That being said, this lady definitely has a beautiful voice that is similar to Karen’s. Not quite the fullness and depth of alto but still beautiful!

Tori is an alto and can tippy tap right on the Contralto range. But Tori can swing up way higher than Karen sang. Witness her Olivia covers on her channel like Sam and her newest, Suddenly. Just delightful.

I closed my eyes as you started to play the video and it was like was transported back to my childhood in the 70's, listening to Karen Carpenter.
All I can say is WOW!!!! I loved Karen Carpenter back in the day and I still love her to this very day!!! She not only had the most pitch perfect voice I ever heard but her voice was so rich and smooth that no matter what she sang I always wanted more!!! I was fortunate enough to have been able to see "The Carpenters" 3 times And those memories are etched in my mind forever!!! I had to restart the video and when I did I closed my eyes and I could swear that I was at one of their concerts!!! While I know that there will never be another Karen Carpenter, I can honestly say that God has blessed Tori with Karen's voice from heaven!!! Tori is an angel sent down from heaven above!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤ her!!!!!!!
Karen had a full, rich lower voice but this woman is great.
@@had64198 if you listen to the side by side video you can hear that Tori is actually on average a little lower/deeper than Karen across the entire song. Karen has “The Basement” and I liken Tori to a few steps down that staircase. Tori on the other hand can sing higher in her range exhibited by her covers of Olivia songs like Sam and Suddenly (her newest). As you said, she’s great! Look for Eduard2004’s channel he did 3 videos mashing up Tori and Carpenters.
Sebs! You mentioned Tori singing in Karen's contralto range. She just released another cover with another producer, "Suddenly," in which she sings Olivia Newton-John's part. And you know Olivia was a soprano. She killed on that one too. It was a gorgeous rendition.
Tori's voice is so rich and smooth. Beautifully performed.
I can't tell you how many weddings I attended in the 70s where this song was played!❤️ If you can't have Karen, this is the next best thing!

Hi Sebs, wonderful reaction and observations regarding the efforts put into this amazing tribute. The video production so aptly showcases many of the musical elements employed in the original arrangement, particularly with the vocal layering and harmonies. Tori is undoubtedly the icing on the cake because, while no one will ever match Karen, Tori's warmth, clarity and angelic tone goes a long way towards embodying Karen's spirit. Not sure though why some commenters feel so compelled to advise Tori against "imitating" as they call it and not using her own voice. She 100% is using her own voice, and besides, this rendition is a tribute, specifically designed as stated to sound "as performed" by the Carpenters. Perhaps because the production and performance is done so well, people wonder why she isn't doing more original work (even though she has) and that she needs to separate herself from "copying" (I call it covering) music she loves. I'm not sure why she can't do both. From what I have gathered, she appears to be an intelligent and very well grounded individual who is, with a little help from those who are close to her, very capable of navigating a path that best suits her needs and aspirations. She has an incredible gift to share.
Karen had a once in a lifetime voice but this young lady comes as close as possible, beautiful singer

I once got into an argument online with someone who said Karen Carpenter was the best female singer ever, and I listed half a dozen other females who covered a greater range of musical styles. The response was "It's about the VOICE!" I listened again, and realised that even compared to a great vocalist like Barbra Streisand, Karen's voice is warm and soothing like nobody else.
So now, I'm really glad to hear such a moving and authentic tribute to Karen Carpenter - the best female singer ever!

Ahh, those people did such a nice job. She really does have so much similarity; what a lovely emulation. I can picture her as a kid, teaching herself by singing along to Carpenters records.
Thanks Sebs. I told you that would be a fantastic rendition of this song. Tori does have a voice that is timeless and is so close to that of Karen Carpenter. But she also has a couple of originals and has just released an Olivia Newton-John song. It's interesting because she has her own voice that sounds much like Karen, and you hear that influence even when she sings other artists. I'm glad you enjoyed it and hopefully many of the viewers here will as well. By the way if you are not really familiar with the original Carpenter song, you should take a minute or two and listen to it as you will appreciate what happened here even more.

She's got a lovely voice but she needs her own songs! Doing covers of other's music won't get her anywhere and she needs to show that she's an original not a copy cat. She needs to show that she is creative enough to write her own music or has her own songwriter. I think she's great but record your own music and you'll eventually find that hit.

Last spring Torri Holub Sing this song at a jazz club called Crooners in Minnesota. Apparently, it was her first time singing in front of a live audience. the only accompaniment was a piano and it looked as though they just handed the music to the pianist, so there was no practice ahead of time. It's on UA-cam. You should watch it, she sounds just as good playing live as she does in this video.

I’m Joe a friend of Ron. I’ve been on the Tori bandwagon and requesting reactions since last October. She’s amazing and this is just one highlight. A damn impressive highlight with a ton of credit to Jim for putting it all together. Hopefully he stops by and can give details. I know he and Tori are busy. Close To You is in the works as a follow up. I agree she’s under valued on UA-cam. On The Gram her top 5 short videos are over 10M in total. TT may even be higher and 180K subs on that one. She’s made some impressive friends including Richard who she met in April when she performed at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary. I don’t know what to recommend you see next but I’ll go with her newest and if you see it you will blow your mind.
She has made two songs with her UK collaborator Dan Wesley. The new one that dropped on Monday is “Suddenly” from Xanadu. It’s a duet originally by Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richard. I’ll let you guess which part Tori sings. She also for the first time in a long form video, did something that she only previously did in her short videos. This is her natural voice, no autotune, no pitch correction. Wings of Pegasus, Fil, analyzed WOJB last March when it dropped, by my recommendation.
Also a very important technical issue. I can’t find this video by search (at least right now) as you don’t have Tori’s name or Carpenters in the title. Carpenter is but isn’t catching for whatever reason. If it’s in the metadata it may catch later. Right now I used Ron’s link to me. Your subs see it, I didn’t. Will sub now. But for a raw search it’s a fail, I’ve seen this issue before and I know people search Tori and Carpenters. Welcome to the Tori rabbit hole, not too deep yet but there’s a lot right now to feast on and three more items to drop in the near future.

Sebs I forgot to note. When you were sliding through her Instagram page. There was a picture on the right column of Tori in a blue t-shirt standing next to an older man in a dark pullover… Richard Carpenter! They officially met at the 55th Anniversary Celebration, in April.
It's more than just the voice, she needs her own music, she needs to find that song that puts her over the top and makes her famous. She will not obtain that by recording/doing a cover of other singer's great hits. She needs a song she can call her own, the Carpenters music and Olivia's music isn't hers. She needs originality, not a copy cat. I love her voice but she needs her own songs, picking people who are already famous with great songs and doing a cover of their music won't get her anywhere if she wants to be famous and successful.
@@suzanneprock7286 she has two originals now. A self written one coming. Using Carpenters as an example. Their first original hit was Goodbye To Love 3 years in. So covers are a way. I agree more originals will help greatly. Just don’t discount a great cover that brings attention. Also, look at her numbers on I and TT, UA-cam is an also ran. Granted those channels don’t have full songs. Her top 5 on I is over 10M combined. Not too shabby.
Dang- she does sound like her! Karen's voice was ever so slightly lower and a smidge raspier, but in general- I'm not sure if I heard it anywhere else that I would be able to tell the difference. I mean, I lot of people have no idea who the Carpenters are but I used to listen to her just after she passed away.
@6.09, that really was a great cover,and yes, it was so clean and crisp with none of the modern vocal runs and ad libs/ scatting etc. Just pure if that makes any sense whatsoever.

Makes a lot of sense to me as I’m an OG Carpenters fan. I was at the 55th Anniversary and saw Tori perform live. What a treat! She has some amazing content. Some of which are on other channels but she links most of them.enjoy!

She already is. You just watched ONE video. A very good one no doubt. Just look at her channel. Lots of songs and styles and does justice to them all. She covers The Beatles, together and separately. She doesn’t sound like John, Paul, George or even Ringo! She was a Beatles fan first. Found Karen/Carpenters when she moved on to the 70’s. Karen is her hero and she’s a Carpenters super-fan. Multi-instrumentalist also. Oh and she can engineer her own videos and has done many. James did the engineering on this one. Yet, no pitch correction! Proven by Wings of Pegasus, last March.

She may be a new artist but she is an old soul. Next up, a new "Carpenters" song written for Tori, called Something to Believe in. It really is. She also does and impressive Olivia Newton John. One other thought, Tori may not be the doppelganger of recorded Karen, but in every live performance Karen wasn't the recorded version either (hate to break it to ya)

Great reaction. I have heard several ladies that try to sound like the Great Karen Carpenter, and a couple of them were close, including a Japanese ladie the did a song in front of Richard, and she was close. Then comes Tori, and she isn't trying to sound, but sounds 99% like Karen. The backing in this video only makes it better. Karen has to be pleased.

I've seen Karen live, at her best. She hits me like no other woman with that vibrato that changes octaves. This lady has that same ability. Thank you for turning me onto this vocal delight.

She has a beautiful voice and is a wonderful singer, but she is missing the deep alto that Karen has naturally. She is a second soprano with a wide range I believe, whereas Karen was an alto.
To my understanding, Karen was a Contralto with a 3.5 octave range. I believe Tori is an Alto she’s close but not in Karen’s “basement” but can go way higher to cover Olivia. Check out her recent short of “Sam” and brand new full length “Suddenly.”

This young lady is good, but certainly not Karen reincarnated. That's an overstatement. She needs to stick to doing her own work and enjoy her own kudos. Covers are always fun, but never better than the originals.

No one can duplicate, physical impossibility. Come close is a whole different thing. A human cannot sing the exact same phrase/song twice, ever. One and that’s it. Try again and see what you get. She’s amazing at what she can do.

Leonid and Friends has a great cover of Superstar. There is almost always going to be pitch correction on these.
I have heard the Leonid and Friends version. It is very good although I still think that Tori captures the essence of Karen even more. I'm not sure of the Leonid version, but there is absolutely no picture correction on Tori.
If you are familiar with Fil and Wings of Pegasus. He did 2 episodes on Tori and this song in March, when the song was new.

She and Jim use similar layering techniques to the exact same ones the Carpenters used. But if you still have doubts, she has a couple of live videos on her site, and at least three "Karen" songs, written after Karen passed away.

This was Jim’s project but Tori is quite the capable engineer, she’s essentially channeling Karen & Richard. On her videos, she does her own layering. She’s amazing on so many levels. No one will ever be Karen. It’s a physical impossibility. Close is a totally different thing. Just like Karen could never repeat any vocal performance again. It’s how vocal cords work. Every time you speak/sing you will get a different result. Tori is close in tone and range and phrasing. She cannot, nor can anyone else be exact. Tori can’t repeat her own performance ever again, either. It’s one and done. Close, yes, exact no.
We have the technology to see the results as a graph, they will only line up when they are from the same recording.

What on earth do you think she is miming to? Or who? Are you not able to see that the audio is out of sync with the video? That issue is down to Sebs' editing, nothing to do with Tori. You've picked the wrong target here, because this girl is pure class.

Not true. She has been evaluated by several reaction channels technically. It is all her. If the timing were off it had to do with the video presentation here. I've not seen that in other videos. Besides the fact that her voice is slightly different than that of Karen. But not by much.
Not lip syncing you are seeing many of the takes in each box. There were many more, this is what fit the video. About twenty voices with Jim’s in total. Wings of Pegasus analyzed this in March, natural, no pitch correction or autotune.
See the technical explanations given by forensic musicologist Wings of Pegasus. Fil has done a detailed analysis of Tori and found her to be the real deal.

I agree the audio is out of sync in this reaction video. However, that has to do with the editing of this video. If you watch the original video you will see that the sync does match.
Learn new music artists and songs
She's okay, but she is missing an entire level of depth and effortless power that Karen possessed. Don't forget that half of what you are hearing as "identical" is the arrangement and the harmonies. The total production is a greater resemblance to the Carpenters, than Tori is a resemblance to Karen.
I would fully acknowledge your point about the overall production, including the harmonies, as significantly contributing to the similarity with the original track, but to characterize Tori's vocals as simply "okay" is pretty disingenuous. Even other commenters who are adamant about the differences between Karen and Tori's voices are willing to acknowledge that she has a beautiful gift in her own right and Fil from the Wings of Pegasus YT channel has thoroughly analyzed the similarities in tone and pitch precision that she shares with Karen. NO ONE will ever match the beauty, elegance and clarity of Karen's voice, but l am more than happy, along with countless others to celebrate the amazing effort of a 20 year old woman in today's world who is a devoted fan of the Carpenters and pays this kind of tribute to them with the beautiful gift that she has.
