You may feel that Layne's arrangement is a little choppy at times but it is a typical example of how Voice Play makes all their covers their own while staying true to the original.
I thought Nothing Else Matters couldn't be beat and then this one came along, followed by Creep. The project managers were Geoff (NEM), Layne (this one), Eli (Creep). To me, a great trifecta. Here I love that Layne's dad loaned them the car which he bought new in 1972, I believe.
Oh, all of us saw the little smile, Sir Hairless 😏 To hear Layne sing even 1 or 2 lines is a very rare treat , and when it does happen all us Voiceplay fans get the smiles/giggles/giddy excitement. I've have seen reactors bounce out of their chairs at a Layne singing part 🤣
3:40 "I'll try and talk about it; that's what I do in these videos ..." And we are so glad that you do!!!! Even when you look a little stunned by what you've just heard ...
“Full of surprises…” That’s one of the many reasons why I love them so much! And I really love it when Layne sings and when Eli “poops his pants”. The BTS on this one is really funny, particularly when J and Cesar sing into the fans like we all did when we were kids. The car belongs to Layne’s Dad.
This shoot they were being eaten by the bugs. The fog machine glitched and lost power to the lights. Filming at the loading dock behind the Oviedo Mall where Layne and Tony's PattyCake Productions studio is located. They went for the 1980s Miami Vice vibe.❤ Crockett and Tubbs.
@@Broomrider1492Well, they were running everything on one extension cord run out from Pattycake. And the car battery kept going low from running the headlights.
Your critiques are completely fair and I agree. As a musician, there's a certain structure you're looking for and even on a subconscious level, the human brain gravitates to and prefers structure and consistency. Being a child of the 80s, though, I think there's a generational perspective in the chaos of this song. The 80s were all over the place, so I think since they were going for a quintessentially 80s vibe here, the manic energy and constantly keeping you guessing what was going to happen next was actually apropos to the decade. Or I could just be completely overthinking this and Layne is simply a gremlin of randomness and we're just along for the ride with his mad genius. 🤣
I loved the Phil Collins version of this song. But I have to admit that I like the voice play version even better. Thank you for your review of this music. You always point out things that I missed.
Phil Collins is one of the best drummers ever. So to me this song is all about that epic drum solo, especially when you watch a live performance! The first half in the original is just that ominous setup of waiting for the drums to kick in. 🔥🥰 So I was missing the focus on drums in this cover. 😅 But I appreciate how percussive they made this song. 😊 Wonderful analysis SH! "Filthy bass", the light sarcasm and that voice crack. 😂❤
🎼 .. the harmonies are at such a high level. I am not sure who is my favorite on this one. I know that when Eli entered with his ROCK voice , I got the goosebumps. I think I need to see these great singers before I die. Great descriptions Sir
I really enjoyed this one, but then, I love a wild Layne arrangement! 😂 It's like a whole new song but captures the nostalgia of the original. Definitely one I've listened to a lot! ❤
I love that you called out the "ominous" feeling in the opening. I've always said this video makes it feel like someone challenged J to a street fight/sing off and the rest of the gang go along to back him up. This is also the song I recommend for newcomers to VoicePlay. It really lets you get a feel for all of their strengths without any one person dominating the whole song.
Ditto! Impressed by how you can find and describe so much in a "simple" arrangement. I can't follow it all, but I'm learning. Thanks! (Great shirt, by the way.)
Crazy this is one of my favorites arrangements and songs by them, I like how different and risky it is, it feels like fresh air. It has a bit of everything too, Cesar lows and highs, Eli's rock mid notes and high notes, Geoff's bass and chest beautiful sound, Layne singing and crazy with the beatbox, J-None with that high note before Eli, I believe him on this one was one of my favorites from the ones he's on. I'm literally in love with this performance. ALSO; in love with your analysis, they did go kinda crazy with the notes changing, I hadn't noticed but the demonstration in the piano showed that the second cord was totally different, I wouldn't have guessed by only listening. That is a bit unusual for Voiceplay, they got crazy arrangements but they tend to stay in layne (hehe see what I did there) with the cords of the original song. Contrary to you and some comments, I do feel there is a clear climax here, and I never feel like it builds and dies, I always feel it building to the point where I am in the front of my seat about to fall and then hell breaks lose. Anyways it's a pleasure to have another intense analysis to this masterpiece by you, it made my day, my whole week. I have been working so much I didn't have time to enjoy anything. But with this and today being Friday, with the whole weekend ahead, man what an incredible way to start it. Will e hard to top it. Hahaha. Hugz, Lupe.-
🫐🫐💙🎼 ... This was awesome , even though I have watched it 23 times already. Great breakdown , once again Sir Hairless. I truly like when all the members of Voiceplay sing on a track.
I like that Layne's arrangement has a kind of choppy, compartmentalized feel to it. The original song, while completely iconic, can kind of drag at some points, in my opinion. I think Layne's version definitely keeps the energy up and keeps you guessing, which I like.
Many other reactors watching this wondered if Layne could pull off the drum solo. Silly reactors! Layne pulled it off brilliantly, and we get to hear his sweet voice, too. Clear and sweet like a mountain spring! As an 80s kid, this is in my favorites. The 80s effects are so fun. I love it maybe even more than the original! (I've already established I tend to prefer group songs to solos, with some exceptions. And Geoff, well, he's a group by himself.) And I especially adore Cesar's withering glance to the camera in "I would not lend a hand!" Oooh, that man has sass for DAYS! Don't get me wrong, Phil Collins is awesome, and did you know he's Charlie Brown all grown up? That's my theory, anyway. LOL! Fantastic reaction.💙
This has always been one of my favorite songs, and I have always preferred Phil Collins to any of the covers I've heard, but I feel as though Voice Play enhanced it and I love it equally to Phil Collins' version. The "teasing" you mention is a part of the original (in my opinion) and raises the tension. This song makes me hold my breath, and I really feel the emotion and intensity - which is - again in my opinion - kind of the point. I've always been a little embarrassed at loving such a revenge song, but the intensity and emotion just pull me in every time I've heard it.
Looking like rock Eli is about to poop himself a bit. I've never heard it said like that of him before. I rolled over laughing at that one. Thank you so much for another great reaction to Voice Play. ❤
I LOVED this song! It was part of my young adulthood and we played it to _death_. I found VoicePlay's arrangement gorgeous and completely in keeping with the mood and impact of the original
Definitely enjoyed your comments in this one (Oh hi Layne, Eli gonna poop his pants... 🤣🤣)!! Ha! I really LOVE what they did to this song. For me it's just full of surprises and made this song so much more interesting than the original. Layne's brain is definitely a mystery and how he came up with all these crazy arrangements are just mind-boggling!!
"D1. Filth." 😂 SO glad you showed the choral album! I've only recently discovered your channel, but I was already thinking you must have a background in one of the big cathedral choirs. You've got that crystal clear tone when you demonstrate pitches. It's stunning. I hope to hear more of it as I get farther into the channel! Edit after homework: Cambridge choir(!)
Always glad that you stop before your brain explodes. I love everything they do, but Layne's arrangements do tend to be a bit more manic. They were recording this in the middle of the night, outdoors, in Florida's summer heat and humidity. Florida is also known for bugs and they were around , too. The headlights went off in the car, Layne was wearing his mechanic hat for a while that night.
Manic is a good description. Sometimes I wonder if Layne has ADHD and if that’s why I love his arrangemnets! The …squirrel!!!… moments keep my brain engaged. 😂
I do wish that before your reaction you had seen this clip from the pilot episode of Miami Vice, which is where most of my generation first heard this song. That is the emotional tone that Voiceplay was going for. It also explains the car, outfits and static filled VHS tape playback they used. It is a pivotal scene in the show, where undercover vice cop Sonny Crockett is heading towards a showdown. So your comment about listening to feel cool (or tough enough to do the job) fits perfectly ua-cam.com/video/-aMCzRj3Syg/v-deo.html
The iconic version of this song was performed in a live Paris concert. I suggest you watch "in the Air Tonight live HD" on Hard Force' channel. For whatever reason, Phil's official channel has a different live performance. It's still good, but not the iconic one, and doesn't have 121 million views. Anyway, the extended atmospheric intro is going to calmly knock your socks off. You might need a parasol. And you might want to count the syllables in the word "life".
This is my favourite Layne arrangement... this is a really repetitive song and the instrumentation helps the original along. VP only has their voices and some distortion... so Layne had to try and keep each verse interesting... Thank you for the breakdown (as always 😉) 🌹🕊
This is one of my all time favorites. (How many all time favorites is one allowed to have?) And I do wait for the Cesar talcum powder clap moment. I often wonder if I’ll miss it. You can almost feel and smell the heat and garbage.
Geoff talked in an interview about the use of silence in an arrangement. This is one of the pieces they’ve done where you can really see the effectiveness. Loved the “hi Layne!” Great reaction. I know fans hate to hear their group being criticized but I’m really curious to know more about the parts you weren’t such a fan of (grammar police, come get me!).
I know this song, not my favorite, but it was quite famous in its time. I like and know some Phil Collins or Genesis songs. The arrangement is different, but still good. 🥰
I’m a sucker for Eli’s beats, Layne’s singing, and Geoff’s vocals so this performance is enjoyable for me. I agree that it builds almost to an apex, only to die, build agin, and die again. I’m frustrated that, for me, there wasn’t the physical release of a climax - but it still brought satisfaction.
I think the issue is that it’s such a personal song that only Phil Collins can sing it with such menacing conviction. Great arrangement by VoicePlay but it just can’t capture the pain in the original version.
You always manage to say something in your reactions and analyses that makes me say "Yeah. . .that's it, exactly." This time? No, it wasn't the "poop his pants" comment (how disrespectful!). It was when you said this was the type of song to make you feel cool walking down the street. That's it, exactly--just listening to this phantasmagoric arrangement, watching this video, "hearing" the master, Phil Collins, behind it all, makes me feel cool. Because I get it. (I grok it?) I feel like I'm participating in the coolness of these five men working their wizardry to produce the sound created by Layne's eerily brilliant mind. (Can you picture Layne trying to explain to each one how he wants them to sound?) It's not an arrangement that's meant to flow. It's meant to make us uncomfortable. But in a cool way. BTW, you should watch Phil Collins performing this live (in Paris, I think) at (ua-cam.com/video/PEWP9nbqG9Q/v-deo.html). I'd love to see you react to it, but if not, at least you should see it for yourself. Not the same as listening to a studio recording.
I’ve been loving these acapella reaction. Then I remember your title is literally “classical singer”. I am wondering if you are into orchestral stuffs? If you do please check out Cody Fry. He’s an amazing talented orchestral pop singer song writer arranger. If somehow you do react to him please go check out his “I hear a symphony” “Underground” “Waltz for sweatpants” “Sound of silence” etc. He’s going to blow your mind I’m sure 🫶🏻

An arrangement like this is only made possible by familiarity, and trust - of 5 exceptional vocalists. Boundary testing...
The complexity is everything for me in this. And then the solo "mic drop" ending just slays me.
love when they unleash the Eli ❤

Miami VicePlay. There's a great segment from the show with the original of this song, and that's the feel they're giving to this version.

That wonderful synth sound in the beginning was actually sung by Cesar. (Yes, there obviously is distortion on it)
When they do it late in the song, without quite as much distortion, you can both see and hear who is doing it.
@mrkraemer77722 if you pay close attention to some of the opening shots, you can see Cesar moving his hands to the part he's singing.
