The most compelling aspect of McGilchrist’s work is its beauty. What a visceral, meaningful correction beauty can provide! Solzhenitsyn (in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech) rightly asserted: “…if the all too obvious & the overly straight sprouts of Truth & Goodness have been crushed, cut down, or not permitted to grow [as is obvious in our day], then perhaps the whimsical, unpredictable, & ever surprising shoots of Beauty will force their way through & soar up to that very spot, thereby fulfilling the task of all three.” McGilchrist has done with beauty what many of the great minds of our time-in their relative approaches to Truth & Goodness-failed to do.

One version of the 'lost key' story is: After searching for a while the helper asked: Where did you drop it? And the one seeking his lost key, answers "in my own house". Then why are you looking here under the street lamp? "Because there is more light here than inside my own house." This 'losing the key inside my own house' adds a further element of 'the key is lost inside each of us' yet our attention is always directed outward toward experience that is given to us by the light of the five outer senses and the concepts or structures of consciousness based on the light of the five senses. Our consciousness receives the light of the five senses that gives us the impression and later the general concept that we are in the body. However it is also true to say that the body is an appearance in consciousness. Yet until we can have a direct experience of this, it seems impossible and carries no real weight or meaning for us. William James referred to the consciousness of the infant as a "blooming, buzzing confusion". Developmental studies of Piaget and many others these days have shown that initially the infant consciousness is completely undifferentiated. Then over 0-3 years of interaction with the environment (note here that the body and its parts such as the hand and mouth first are implicitly used then later word labels are applied to them). Several points to consider are: Interaction with primary caregiver and the environment as a whole yields the implicit view that caregiver or mother is "out there" in that separate body and I am 'in here' in this separate body. These impressions form a structure or template in consciousness that gives us subject-object knowing that comes to include self 'self vs other knowing. This is a developmental revelation that is a necessary structure at this stage of seeing and knowing through the subject-object mode. However this stage or structure through which we via the subject-object dichotomy are knowing is also a limitation or structure developed in consciousness. It is a limited way of knowing. What would it mean to us to realize that our body is an appearance in consciousness? Can there be direct experience of undifferentiated consciousness and come to realize that consciousness is primary and what we call time and space are constructed perceptions that are needed and very handy yet they are not fundamental. Rather they come out of the subject-object mode of knowing. So where did we lose the key? One way to say it is: we lost it at a very young age when we became identified with the subject-object mode of knowing. While this identification was necessary developmentally, as an adult we may be able to see deeper. Rumi tells us the 'body' is a guest house and that if all arising perceptions are welcomed with wonder (including the perception of the physical body itself) without our insisting that these perception, thoughts, concepts are fixed and final based on our subject-object dichotomy, then we are on the way to 'finding our lost key". Rumi "Darkness is your candle. Your boundaries are your quest." Darkness here is the complete wonder of not knowing such that we are not imposing subject-object knowing on our experience. Boundaries in the wonder are useful and needed to function in time and space orientation yet we also can and need to subject them to complete wonder when they arise in our experiencing if we want our 'lost key' to be revealed to us. It seems to us that we can only see and learn 'in the light' of subject-object knowing. However our lost key can only be discovered in the "darkness of wonder" in which the subject-object mode of knowing is seen to be secondary and 'after the fact' of true wonder.

Depends what you mean by mindfully, it's quite a nebulous construct. For example, in Zen Buddhism there is a heavy emphasis on spontaneity.
It's a strange proposition that seeks to push mindfulness into the category of mindlessness.

We are all on our way to becoming dust. Jesus christ is the way, the truth and the life.
Jordan peterson finally gets it.
lol
The second law of thermodynamics is that the world is breaking down and getting more disordered. Life breaks this law. Jordan Peterson is a phenomenal teacher and speaker. His problem is when he starts talking about stuff he doens't really know. He's very ambitious. Has known he's wanted to be a politician since he was 13.
@@jlmur54 Whatching Jordan Peterson’s very honest and recently humble videos gives a rare view into a personal journey. This talk points to the construction of meaning where language and humor are at the cutting-edge. Interesting.
@You are correct But Agreed. And he doesn’t inform his listeners to this fact. Which is a shame. He could really be a force for good if he could remain more objective, in effect.
Jordan peterson A warning to the world. A wing and a prayer. You Tube.
