- In 1964, Elkinsville, a small town located in the Salt Creek Watershed near Bloomington, was forced to relocate in order to build the Lake Monroe Reservoir.

My name is Billy Elkins my fourth great grandfather was William Elkins.Yes I have been to Elkinsville.
your family had good taste ..beautiful area to settle down before the man took it away
Wow!! He was the founder
How many Indians did your racist ancestors kill for this land
My 4th great grandfather is William Elkins as well.
My Grandparents Herschel and Dorothy Stines old farm is now covered by Lake Monroe reservoir. Have many childhood memories of the old place and family
My name is Charles Bohall.. My great great grandparents were citizens of Elkinsville. As much as it was a bad situation. Its neat to see how deep rooted my family name is in Indiana...
Love it out there in Elkinsville. The whole place is awesome. I hike there almost every year. You find quite a few interesting things around Elkinsville cemetery and post office. Great fishing too
Glad you are enjoying the land that our families lived on for hundreds of years. It is beautiful. I try to go make it out annually, but it is bitter sweet. Seeing my relatives stones and the land turned into nothing but a hiking destination
@Premium Colin Yes sir I understand exactly what you are saying. From what I was told from someone was that in early 80s the state revealed that most homeowners actually were not in the flood plane and therefore shouldn't have been forced from there homes. Story is cool but I always pass and go to Elkinsville.
WOW thank you so much for doing this for others...its amazing to see what a wonderful community was built washed away..but really it was still there all along : ) happy days
My great grandparents, Ellis and Olive Crider lived on the other side of Browning Mountain in a village called Youno. So Sad eminent domain took the farm. It was well above the level of the lake
My family name is Wilkerson and my family's relatives lived there till they were removed
Legend says that Indiana university dumped their cyclotron waste in the Elkinsville dump before the Corp of engineers flooded the dump. Out of sight out of mind. 😢
i'm city folk and wanted to see the hill, mountain what ever you want to say it is .. and i had not clue where the trail was or even started ..till we seen the man in the video .great guy put us right on the start of the trail and told us where the henge was ..we went on our way and found it just as he said ..thank you sir ..i want to see the old homestand one day ..i've been back 5 times and never seen it ..
How do I get ahold of this guy? I would be very interested in talking to him or anyone in this town or salt creek valley. My grandpa grew up there and don’t have a lot of info on that side. Theodore Meadows.
Yal meadows too😊
Bev from Mitchell ind . But grandpa and grand pawas around
My question is, how many taverns were lost!?
Is Elkinsville on land leased by the Army Corp of Engineers? Is it legal to carry a handgun if we come to visit the area?
Was it legal for them to take our land? Just respect the land, the spirits do most of the justice out there. I've yet to see one LEO in 30yrs. Great grandfather and a few others are planted in those woods.
50 thousand acres of contiguous land would be yellow wood brown county park and Hoosier national. It’s the Colorado of Indiana prettiest area in Indiana. Rattle snakes bobcats and coyotes
