Great Pyrenees are actually guardian dogs, not herding dogs. They have no desire to herd. ;-) They are meant to fight predators. The Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, etc. do the herding.
Pyrenees don't fight predators either, unless they're forced into it. They bark. A LOT, and they're big and intimidating and in that way they fend off predators and protect the herd.
But you're right, they're NOT herding dogs.
They're also below average on the energy scale. One short walk a day is about all they need. A trip to a dog park for about 30 minutes is more than enough to settle them down and sleep the rest of the day. They'll sleep all day anyways, but then they'll be up all night barking if you don't exercise them during the day.
And because of their notoriously stubborn behavior, they're also not easy to train at all. They can be trained, to be sure, but they require a lot of patience. It's quite typical of a Great Pyrenees to go for a walk with you and then lay down and try and take a nap and at over 100 lbs, it's not easy to get them up and walking again once they've decided to lay down.
They're very placid dogs for the most part, and very patient themselves, and great with small animals it considers a part of it's pack, but they've been bred to do their job of protecting their herds on their own for as much as months at a time, so they will predate upon other animals not apart of their pack. That means they'll be wonderful with your cats, but they'll try and eat the neighbor's cats, squirrels, birds, you name it.
@@RicoLen1 Pyrenees will fight anything that threatens its flock, hence spike collars.

Great Pyranees are livestock guardian dogs, not herding dogs. Secondly, Great Pyranees actualy have above average intelligence because they are very independent. Thirdly, Great Pyranees are very famous for being EXTREMELY hard to train. Also, their affection level should be way higher. Great Pyranees are also some of the most kid-friendly dogs and should deserve a higher ranking.
Great Pyrenees "Higher energy"...? I don't know, my 2 are couch potatoes!
My Golden lived 13 years and I exprcted more. I heard of one making 20.
That's actually pretty good for a golden ,and unfortunately their life span is way to short.. best dogs in the world ❤❤
