Nice one John. Having now seen your vlog which covers all I'd need to know to consider fitting one, if I was refitting a van, I'd fit one of these. There's much to say about cassette toilets, but the main issue for me is the limiting factor of capacity and the need to have a suitable place to empty and clean the cassette on a frequent basis. Where as with this that crucial factor is far less limiting, and ideal for extended trips away from conventional waste facilities. With regard to compostable bags, we've tried these in our compost heaps at home, and they take months to even begin to break down in some cases when used for vegetable peelings etc, but some we've found do leak fluid after about a week, so we use a plastic bin to hold the bag until its full and ready for disposal. But the bags do seem to hold together for much longer than one might suppose in dry conditions. 👋

Informative and funny, loved the vlog. We lived on a narrow boat for 8 years and the conversation with other boaters always came around to toilet talk, only people that live off grid eh😂. At the time we had ours we were allowed to pour the urine in the hedgerows because it is classed as a natural fertiliser and the poop we were allowed to put in a bin, bagged of course. After all what do people think farmers spread on fields😂🤣😂

Hi John, Thanks for being real about toilets. I built my own separating toilet for my van to cut costs. I purchased a pre made plastic urine diverter. I used a 5 gallon bucket for the poo. The front of it is cut out to match the shape of the urine diverter. The interface is pretty good, no leaks yet. I use grocery bags with shredded paper inside. In the bottom of the bucket I put an upside down metal cake tin to raise the bottom as the grocery bags are a bit short. I have another 5 gallon bucket with twist on lid to store the poo bags in case I can't dispose of the bag immediately. It's also a good place to put doggie poo bags and kitchen garbage as well. I don't have a fan either. I chose this set up because I have a bad back and didn't want to lift heavy chemical toilet cassettes.

I think these are a great idea but just can’t understand how they are quite so expensive. I’ve been looking at a Trelino compost toilet as we need something smaller for a VW T6 and again they are about 4 x the price of an equivalent sized Thetford. Just wish some of the UK companies would get on board the Compost design and make something which is more affordable.

Great review as always. Apart from the clonking sound when lowering the lid seems like a good product. Maybe they could have made the poo sliders on a button or swivel knob, rather than relying on it opening when you sit down. With regards to the fan, maybe try researching a quieter one, or find a way to sound deaden the areas around it. Really like that it can be moved around, if you so chose to change your layout.

Thinking about getting something similar for our new van so we can use the "dog bins" rather then play "hunt the elsan point". Couple of thoughts on the fan. Option one, wire it to the 12v power with a switch and a 555 timer PWM speed controller (more efficient than a say 5 watt resistor which would waste power by turning it into heat). Or option 2, add a small £15 2-3 watt solar panel on the roof so that the fan only runs when its getting solar. We used the latter method on our old van with a couple of 12v PC fans in the fridge vent, that way you don't generally get the fan noise at night (also works as a pretty good alarm clock......).

Use every available opportunity for poos at garages, cafes, public conveniences etc. Rules are made for breaking, so sometimes there’s a spicy curry exception😅 So many people are so squeamish about natural bodily functions and products - you’ve just got to deal with it. Incontinent in-laws live with us and their pads go in the Black bin - No difference here for the Separett Tiny. Thanks again for a down to earth review.😊

All very interesting and something we looked at closely for our camper. My conclusion was firstly there are a lot of little angles and hidden traps to clean, more so than with a cassette toilet. Secondly I don’t think sewage should end up in landfill rather than going to a sewage works specifically set up to deal with human waste. I know there are already millions of soiled nappies in land fill sites, a practice that has become an accepted form of management when it shouldn’t be as there is no alternative. For me separating toilets or composters are fine if there is easy and frequent access to a compost heap, very seldom the case. So for these reasons I will be sticking to a cassette loo until other waste management has improved.

@@GadgetJohn Smell can still be eliminated at low fan speed if the exhaust path has minimum air resistance and avoids back draught. Also a home made pan cover for use when the fan is running slow. A small opening that is set so there is a very slight negative pressure in the pan at minimum fan speed. Yes, there are specific bins for dog poo. There are none for human poo, the contents of a composting toilet are quite considerable, and no local authority have the means to deal with it. I understand the attraction, chemical toilets are vile, but, generally are emptied into the sewage system where it can be dealt with appropriately. Imagine a bag of human poo bursting on a bin man? You need land to use these properly, it needs to dry out which then creates compost. Biodegradable bags need sunshine to break down.

Most bins are barely handled by bin men these days, wheelie bins biffa etc them been impacted by a split bag very likely.

I think it might be worth checking with a local council the legality of dumping human waste in a bin and also with waste segregation which bin should it go in ? Just as a side note, when transporting a human waste sample for analysis it’s classed as “Infectious Substance”. I don’t have a problem with using this type of toilet, just the problem of correct disposal.

@@GadgetJohn Sorry I didn’t make it clear, I didn’t mean that everyone should contact every region they go to. I meant it would be interesting to find out the general rule/law in use in the uk about dumping human waste in general rubbish bins. Not having a go at you or anyone else, just saying that that would be my only worry about using this type of toilet. Sorry once again if I have offended you.

It all seems so incredibly complicated, I just wear a dog outfit and can get away with having a poo in the woods or a park. Go back later to pick it up and bin it. Choose the right outfit for your build though, a Great Dane in my case. 🤔🤔🤔😃

So when you stand up or sit up to wipe your arse the flap closes so you cant throw the toilet paper down 🫥

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn  6 місяців тому

If you stand up before wiping that’s an odd technique, but leaning forward to wipe still leaves the flaps open to drop the paper in. It’s all explained in the video.

Also consider having a small bin using dog poo bags for your toilet tissue as it does take up the space so therefore makes the bags last longer .....

I’d rather not fill the bag with just poo, the paper helps dry it out to remove the smell

Seems an awful lot of compromise, to overcome an issue that could be largely mitigated by a cassette toilet and buying a second cassette. No swivel feature either. Not for me, but a great review

This looks like a germaphobes nightmare!!! As annoying as finding Elsan points are I think I'd rather have the annoyance of that than having an open bag of poo in my van!! The smell is bad enough having nappies in sealed poo bags or dog poo in a sealed poo bag. I'd be guilty of bagging any poo as soon as it was produced to get rid of the smell. With that being said, if it works for others then fair shout.

I am amazed, that at a price of some £700 (WHAT??!!) this product is so poorly made.
There is no soft areas inside the casing to stop the two containers rattling.
There are electrical wires on the back, slapped on with some nasty tape? A dedicated directional channel would be nice!
There are Crocodile Clips on the end of the 12V power source wires?? Really?? Who on earth developed that idea?!
How about a 5525 or a 5521 or an XT60 connector for the power source connection?? Never heard of those?
Where on earth did the manufacturers think, that the customer is actually going to "clip" these crocodile clips to? In a vehicle build, where everything should be secure, neat, rattle-damage free and above all safe?
    What a JOKE!
The fact, that the urine bottle can not even be connected to the 12V power source separately, is another oversight.
So a flashlight will be needed, a very bad sense of smell, or a good nose clip and a very sharp eye to estimate the amount of urine in the canister through a very tiny hole.
    Yeah, sure.
And don't get me even started on the fact, that this vastly overpriced "toilet" has only 4 tiny and flimsy screw holes, to fix it to the back wall.
Why not a clip-on fixing, which would allow for the whole thing to be removed for cleaning and/or repairs?? Or some kind of bayonet fixing for easy removal.
The best one for me is: "Sit down and hear a bang!"
    Really?
So, are you forcing me to wake up every other occupant in my vehicle, if I may just need the toilet in the middle of the night?
    Perfect!
Never heard of impact-foam then, have you WooWoo?
    What a great idea😡
At best, this is a very poor attempt to make us more environmentally friendly.
At worse, you will buy a rattly, poorly thought out and vastly overpriced toilet, with features that are more a hindrance then being helpful.
