Wow Ron!! This video is excellent, but only to be exceeded by your masterful craftsmanship!! I just bought my bike and will be building it and you’re my first stop to learn how to build a tank!!😍
Barbie, my first reply was hasty, since I was replying to a number of comments. I didn't realize who I was 'talking' to. I hope you are well, and I look forward to seeing the beautiful tank I know you will make! Be sure to send me pictures.
+HaxoResc I have had several classes in Boras, Sweden, and I visited Oslo on one of my trips - it was beautiful! If you can find someone in Norway who could host a workshop for me next year, let me know. I'm considering putting together a workshop tour through Europe and Scandanavia.
geeeeezzzzz nice work I've always wanted to make custom stuff like this. I just do general fab spiral staircases ss Bench Tops brass handrails. but never anything like this in Australia I don't think there's many places that do this type of custom work. I wasn't sure about having wing nuts seen on the top of the tank but then they showed the bike and the finished product awesome job
im honored ,,, i watch loads of your videos , your a man with a gift for tin bashing. you keep posting , and like thousands of others , ill keep being inspired by watching , the videos you post improve my work on a daily basis. I truly thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Yes, of course a tank can mount from the bottom - in fact, that's a much more common way to mount a tank. The goal for this tank was to feature the fasteners as a design element.
Randy, They are called 'Rotabroach Annular Cutters' and are made by Hougen. You'll find them online pretty easily, and they are a superb tool for cutting holes in sheetmetal!
I don't know where you can find a tank like this one. Here's a source for a wide selection of more traditional tank designs: www.lowbrowcustoms.com/collections/motorcycle-gas-tanks?page=1
How can I get into this type of work?? I really like metal work like this but all I can find are schools offer specific welding courses or blacksmithing.
Brazing sheet metal requires lap joints. I use butt joints for my tanks (and corner joints for the tunnel). It would be quite difficult to configure a custom aluminum gas tank to utilize lap joints.
Very nice taste and styling. I didn't have the money to attend your class when you were in the Netherlands a while back but I'm gonna buy your dvd's for sure. Can't wait to find a garage unit so I can do this as well. Or at least try to lol.
Ok Ron ! can I use the english wheel wich iron sheet metals ? work fine it ? See my video , is a project for my school , the childrens of 15 years old make all the electric wiring of a conventional car in it. In the future , I make all the body parts wich steel metal sheets. For this I quistion you if the english wheel work good wich STEEL metal sheet of 1,0 mm. Thanks ! Master !
I'm looking for someone to make a bunch of aluminum motorized bike frames and tanks that I would sell on my website or to bike shops. If I sent you my steel frame and tank do you think you could make cheaper aluminum copies for me to sell? I just need frames and tanks. I would complete the bikes and motorize them myself.
I'm increasing the size of my 13ltr on my fmx650 as I've fitted a mikuni tm40 racing carb, mivv gp cans, dna filter and airbox mod. It was doing 110mls before the mod 85 after.. I'd like to get 150 lucky I'm a tig/stick and mig welder so I can do the mod at work with no cost to me.. Unless I ruin it and have to buy new tank!
Stainless steel is not generally used for motorcycle gas tanks, because of the difficulty of forming the material, and the fact that stainless distorts a great deal when it is welded. I used 1008 drawing-quality (mild) steel for the tank in the video.
The metal master created a very nice tank. The commentary did not do justice to the artist, should have just shut up and allowed the artist work. Thumbs up for the artist but a big negative to the commentary.
Norman Dyck - Thanks for commenting on my UA-cam video. I was very honored to be selected by the How it's Made program to show how I make a motorcycle gas tank. There is always more than one way to do a job. I use the techniques that I've had the best results from, but I'm not going to say this is the ONLY way to make a tank!
This type of work is exactly why I bought an Everlast welder and am learning how to weld. Fantastic work. I love it.
Yes, TIG welding opens up a lot of possibilities for doing top-quality work!
Wow Ron!! This video is excellent, but only to be exceeded by your masterful craftsmanship!! I just bought my bike and will be building it and you’re my first stop to learn how to build a tank!!😍

That’s so cool that you were featured on How it’s Made. I can’t believe I’m just seeing this video now
It was a great honor for me, indeed!
Hi Ron, Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I will buy your DVD collections. Great tutorials. Best Regards from Romania ( Europe ). Alex
Glad you like them! Don't forget that you can rent, stream, or download my videos, which eliminates the cost for shipping DVDs. covell.cinevee.com
That was a gorgeous bike.... Great job Ron.
Thank you kindly!
@@RonCovell - You're Welcome Kindly¡! LoL
Beautiful work. I've always wanted to make tanks with my powertig welder. You make it look so easy.
I hope you try your hand at it!
Cool! You are on TV! Great work too!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I have 44 UA-cam videos, so you may enjoy some of the others, too!
Amazing to see you do this Ron! Wish you could come to Norway and have a class! :D

@@RonCovell Will surely check them out, sir. Have a good day!😄
Is it possible to mount the gas tank and have it screwed in at the bottom of the tank instead of on top?
Yes, of course a tank can mount from the bottom - in fact, that's a much more common way to mount a tank. The goal for this tank was to feature the fasteners as a design element.
Oh ok gotcha but you use the same method to screw it in on the bottom just like the top?
Well, there are quite a number of ways of mounting a tank from the bottom. Here is one good one:

Alright sweet thank you so much
At 1:40 you drill holes in the tunnel. What is that tool? A rotobroach? Great video!
Yes, it's a small Hougen Rotobroach. These tools are unexcelled for making holes in sheetmetal.
Ron Covell thanks!
What is the hole cutting tool @1:44?
The tool is called a Blair Rotabroach, a type of annular cutter that works well with both sheet metal and plate, and they come in all sizes.
Good work.... Please tell me name of machine which used in making fuel ⛽ tank....
The machine shown at 2 Minutes 16 Seconds is an English wheel.
Ron, where can I find the drill bits you used for the mounting tubes?
Randy, They are called 'Rotabroach Annular Cutters' and are made by Hougen. You'll find them online pretty easily, and they are a superb tool for cutting holes in sheetmetal!
Hello, can you please advise me on what type of metal was used for this?
I used 1008 Drawing Quality Steel
ok thanks
Hi Ron, one question...
what kind of steel is it? is that alum or stainless??
and what is the thickness of the sheet....
thanks
The material is 18-gauge 1008 (mild) steel.
thank you for good idea
Glad you liked it!
How would i find a tank like that what style would it be considered
I don't know where you can find a tank like this one. Here's a source for a wide selection of more traditional tank designs: www.lowbrowcustoms.com/collections/motorcycle-gas-tanks?page=1
@@RonCovell thanks
he pants it 4:48 :D
Ron Covell said in a show he could not paint hihi :)
Nice work ... hope Ron will give me personal lessons.. xD
3dmoddeler I did not paint that tank, regardless of what the narrator said.
What kind of welder are you using?
+Ethan Allen I used a Miller Dynasty 200 TIG welder for the tank.
+Ron Covell and can i use that same welder all things aluminum such as the frame and fenders?
Ethan Allen Yes - the Dynasty is a great all-purpose TIG welder!
Plz specify the plate thickness used for this.
I used 18-gauge ( 1.27 mm) steel for this tank
How can I get into this type of work?? I really like metal work like this but all I can find are schools offer specific welding courses or blacksmithing.
If you go to my website - www.covell.biz - you'll see a number of DVDs, and a listing of my workshop schedule
Can you make a custom 5-6 gallon tank for an Indian scout motorcycle?
Thanks for asking, but I don't do work for customers anymore.
@@RonCovell know anyone good who might be able to?
What is the material and thickness of the plate?
18 gauge cold-rolled steel
does anyone know what gauge metal sheet that was?
I used 18-gauge (1.2mm) steel.
Well, it looks easy. Can you make a tank by brazing aluminum? (not welding)
Brazing sheet metal requires lap joints. I use butt joints for my tanks (and corner joints for the tunnel). It would be quite difficult to configure a custom aluminum gas tank to utilize lap joints.
What kind of motorcycle was that? I love the brass parts on it.
It's a custom-built bike, with a modified Harley-Davidson Sportster engine. Joe McGlynn, the founder of Crime Scene Choppers, built the bike.
Very nice taste and styling. I didn't have the money to attend your class when you were in the Netherlands a while back but I'm gonna buy your dvd's for sure. Can't wait to find a garage unit so I can do this as well. Or at least try to lol.

Aaaaawwwwyeaaahh I'll save me some money :D
The bob villa of metal fab love it
Thanks so much!
What kind of metal sheet you use Ron ? Alumminium ? or iron sheet metal ? Ticknnes ? Guillermo from Argentina !
Guillermo, I am using 18-gauge (1.2mm) Steel for this gas tank. You can see me working with aluminum on some of my other UA-cam videos

Sam, I don't do work for customers anymore, but there are lots of talented people you might contact for the work you want.
Ron Covell Thanks!
What year was this episode aired? Nice work, by the way.
John, This first aired in November, 2012.
how do you test tank for leaks??
The tank is pressurized with a couple of pounds of air, then brushed wth soapy water. Look for bubbles, which indicates a leak.
I'm increasing the size of my 13ltr on my fmx650 as I've fitted a mikuni tm40 racing carb, mivv gp cans, dna filter and airbox mod. It was doing 110mls before the mod 85 after.. steel is ss316?
Stainless steel is not generally used for motorcycle gas tanks, because of the difficulty of forming the material, and the fact that stainless distorts a great deal when it is welded. I used 1008 drawing-quality (mild) steel for the tank in the video.
Ron Covell sheet thickness?
I used 18-gauge steel for this tank. Some people use 16-gauge, which is more difficult to form, but is definitely more durable.
sir can u make a gas tank using only acytelene,im a big fan of yours
Yes, you can use oxy-acetylene welding for motorcycle gas tanks!

Ron Covell Thanks Ron you are very talented.. I'm just frustrated with what my project entales
Would love this guy to make a tank for me?
Hey - maybe you can make your own!
Ron Covell I’ve never welded before! I think I could make the templates with the right tools but the welding would be tricky for me!
Well, you have to start somewhere!
I don't understand trying to make the tank look smooth, when the rest of the bike is an aerodynamic disaster. Looks, I suppose.
