I think there’s a timeline for each phase. When you’re very young you can be single and be a heartthrob but after a while as you get up in age, it looks very good for brands that’s you’re married and have stability at home. Makes selling your brand a lot easier when you’re seen as a role model in the eyes of parents who buy their kids their favorite basketball player jersey or sneakers etc. Additionally, when you’re a single player for too long, it’s way easier to paint you with all type of charges because you’re seen as reckless or carefree etc. Both can be true at the same time but it’s all about phases and how you handle distractions.

In order to become the face of the NBA, the commissioner has to support you, a majority of the owners have to support you, big media has to support you, and you have to have a style of play that sells tickets, views, and jerseys. Magic and Bird were a test run for David Stern. Nike and Davis Stern paved the way with MJ for what it takes to be the face of the NBA. Tim Duncan should have been the poster boy for the NBA, but his game was boring... effective, but boring...

That doesn’t tell the whole story for Duncan. The real reason he wasn’t the face of the league is because he was reluctant to take major endorsements outside of adidas. He wasn’t on our screens unless it was a spurs game.

Context is key. I wish they played all of Shannon’s take. He asked specifically does being a model citizen at home make a case. I wish ppl used the full clips. Even ESPN had gotten better at pulling clips where if someone talks it’s not a 10 second clip it’s 30/60 seconds.
That’s why when I see videos online I’m always saying I wanna see more b4 I respond. Snippet will never get my opinion and Shannon take was taken out of context but unless u watch the show u would never know.

Having a stable relationship was the foundation that allowed those legends to focus on becoming the undisputed face of the NBA, but PR and marketing-wise your relationship status has little to nothing to do with you being the face of the league. Did it help that Ayesha became a famous chef? Yes, but Savannah and Vanessa were fairly private but LeBron and Kobe still were the undisputed faces of the NBA because they embraced the spotlight by starring in all the commercials and became media-trained, charismatic speakers to make the commercials good. But none of that would matter if they weren't also good and entertaining that even haters couldn't deny their face on the posters.
The problem now is that the best players of this new generation (Jokic, Embiid, Luka, Giannis) are not native English speakers, they have minimum media training, they do not want the spotlight, and none of them have the highlight package that previous faces had. It's great for basketball purists, but not great for casuals sadly those are the people that pick the face of the league. I genuinely can't see anyone but Anthony Edwards taking over, but that will only work if he gets more media training and becomes an undeniable top 5 player. Otherwise, it'd feel too forced.

He then needs to be one of the best players in the league and has to make deep Playoffs runs. And as Stephen A. Smith puts it, "box office", meaning he is the show, he is the name that draws in the masses who buy tickets to see him perform at his best.

The NBA doesn't promote wives. Taylor Swift was shown more in one season than Savanah been shown in Lebrons career. The NBA promotes to women and basketball fans.

RJ and Gil are obviously correct in this argument. That married shit dont matter for real. You got to be great and have everyone want to be you or like you. That married shit only for a segment.

Not everyone in the world knew or knows who Shaq, wilt, even Kobe are. I should know because I’m not from the us (France), and the only one that really transcended the game of bball on a global level was/is MJ. Like even my mother knows who MJ is. That’s what makes him a category on his own.
Then next tier you have Lebron, and to a lesser degree Kobe.
    Then the currys and Shaq
Then that’s it imo. Magic was before the wild globalisation, so of course it’s a factor - as for MJ, who arrived when the world echo chamber was ready to function fairly good
