  • This is a tutorial about how to play the fill I used in The Boys of Summer by The Ataris (originally Don Henley).
The drum cover (with music) is here: • The Ataris-The Boys of...
Sorry for the errors on the drum transcripts - I can't get Logic to transcribe exactly how I played it, and there are weird rests everywhere. Oh well, hopefully it's useful anyway.
Thanks for watching, and I'd love to hear your feedback!

So, I watched this tutorial about five times, took notes and after a half dozen tries I nailed it. The teacher in you is strong, young Skywalker. And might I add this: your sound is f**king amazing. Wow. What mics are you using? I have noticed on some of your Tool covers that your sound is better than DC's original recording.

Hey John! I've decided to start learning drums too, and to become more than Dads mascot. Although your tutorials receive lower views than the actual covers, I think they make your drum covers and channel a step above the rest, which serve mainly to show off and not share. Its always interesting seeing the parts broken down and explained... another great addition. Keep it up.

Interesting use of 4/2 ... I use that fill all the time but have never really played with moving it around the kit. Usually just use snare but I will definitely try it out haha.

@Will Bloodfarm Haha, I'm glad to see you and Max having some fun together at the new house. Looking back on when I learned these mixed fills, I can't remember if I had actual training from a DVD, or I just picked it up. But regardless, I do it R-L to continue the pattern followed by my hands, and like you said, to be ready to use a kick with a crash if the fill ends that way. Interesting that you use L-R. I'm sure that works fine too.

That is great, so glad this video could help! This fill is very versatile - you can find lots of songs to use it in. I'm using Audix D-series mics, love those things. They make my entry level Gretsch toms sound great.

Sorry about Max bothering you on your tutorial. He takes ages to type.
Anyway, stupidity aside, I also enjoyed the tutorial. Interesting that your 4/2 hand/feet fill and 3/2 fill showed me that you use your right foot 1st. I use my left first for hand/foot quadripulets and such fills... Any reason that you do that, or is it just a personal choice thing - Im guessing its just personal preference, except that for the end of fills, the right foot would be ready to deploy first right?
