The Burr Trail - One of the Most Scenic Backroads in Utah

- One of the most scenic drives in the US may be a backroad! The Burr Trail. It’s in UTAH, so you know it’s going to be spectacular as you drive through the Capitol Reef National Park, towering red cliffs, striped varnishes and grand rock formations. The ground features intense contrasts of bright green pinion pines and juniper and brilliant yellow flowers of lower lying plant like sagebrush. We did it September of 2021 and the weather was perfect. For the most part, you can take a two wheel drive but sections near the end of the trip may leave you wanting a high clearance 4 by 4 with unpaved roads and accompanying issues with weather and water. Come along with us and see for yourself.
For us, the road trip kicked off in Boulder, Utah and ended at Bullfrog Marina.
To get to the Burr Trail from the west side, which starts in Boulder Utah, we took another breathtaking scenic drive. In our case, we drove from Bryce Canyon National Park via State Route 12. Note that Highway 12 has been on top 10 lists of the most scenic highways in the world.
The beginning of the trail features sand dunes formations that have been pressed into stone. Further into the trail toward Capital Reef National park are canyons - The Gulch, Singing Canyon and Long Canyon. Next up are the switchbacks...a half mile and an 800 foot drop.
As always, we enjoy plant based lunches during our trips. Vegan travel can be a challenge but we’re having so much fun with it and feel energetic.
