I'm a PA boy born and raised. My mom's side of the family was PA Dutch. My Mom and my Great Grandma made Black Walnut Cake alot. It is one of my most favorite cakes. We always rolled some Walnuts with a rolling pin real fine and dusted them over the icing. My wife's Grandma also made Shell Bark also known as Hickory Nuts cakes. It's a lot of work because the shell is really hard to crack. You need to use a hammer and then you need to use nut picks to get the meat out. But it's worth all the work. I make Black Walnut Cake but I'm too lazy to make Shell bark cake. 😂 Too much work. Thank you for making this video. It was awesome. I will admit though I'm a Southern Boy (66 years old) at heart. I love eating and making Southern food.
I made this cake this weekend, and we enjoyed it so much, but I added a 1/4 cup more of sugar, and I added 1 teaspoon EACH of cinnamon, ginger, and clove, I took it to a church dinner, and it was well received, but think next time I will add some applesauce to make more moist. This is just an add on idea, thought you might like to try. It was delicious! Stella Love your channel.❤
Looks delicious! I've been looking for this recipe. My grandmother use to fix this! I'm excited for this recipe! I love black walnuts! I'm also in Eastern Kentucky! Howdy neighbor! 👋 😊
Black walnut cake it's a tradition in our family. We have to have it on Christmas morning with a cup of black coffee. We don't put icing on ours. We eat it more like a bread. That tradition has been going on for like four generations now
I LOVED black walnuts too!!! That is the best nut ever!!!!! I have diverticulitis now and can't eat them any longer though. The cake looks delicious!!!
I love Black Walnut Cake but my favorite is a Spice Cake that my Mom made from scratch. She used this as a base for her Fruit Cake she made at Christmas time. It’s the only Fruit Cake I would ever eat. She had people order her Fruit Cake every year.
I grew up in molus. I use to hunt deer in tanyard holler. It's nice to see people from my Era actually making it big. Love your recipes. I live in Blountville tn now. My fiance makes your dressing for every good eating holiday. Thank you for being you.
Love, love, love black walnuts. This brought back memories of digging out the meat from those hard shells when I was a child. And yes, they are hard work but well worth it.
I want to try this recipe, I Love black walnuts, I was raised at Stockton, Mo. which is the Black Walnut capitol of the World, so we had lots of them, I am partial to them over pecans for baking. I just started watching your channel, and I really like it, I like the down home cooking ,have a blessed day, and keep up these good recipes. Stella

Haven’t had a black walnut cake since I was very young. So good.
My mother-in-law always made an egg white frosting to put on her black walnut cake. It sorta tasted like marshmallows. It was amazing!
My mom did too. She called it 7 minute frosting. Loved it

We had two giant trees that produced black walnuts. Mom made a lot of cakes. Yes, opening them is tedious!
It’s near impossible to describe the taste of black walnuts. They taste like they look. But delicious.
