Jackie and Shadow's unhatched eggs were scavenged by Ravens on 3/7.
Both eggs appeared undeveloped: either they were not fertilized or development stopped very early on. There is no way to determine that an egg is unfertilized without breaking it (and the law!).
Today Ravens return to grab the eggshell. Shadow lands on the nest shortly after while Jackie observes him from the Stick Depot Snag. Shadow later joins her on the snag for a rendezvous.
    Egg1 laid 1/11 at 15:58. Egg2 laid 1/14 before 17:11.
Resident male: Shadow (unbanded) since May 2018. Estimated hatch year: 2014
Resident female: Jackie (unbanded) since September 2016. Estimated hatch year: 2012

As much as I love them I try to view them through a lens of science and logic. But when Shadow looked down at the empty nest I burst into tears just hoping that it's not as devastatingly sad for them as it is for us when we go through this ourselves. I think it's obvious that they feel something and I don't care if that's not scientific. Science is human and humans can be pretty darn arrogant and stupid even if we think we aren't. These birds feel and no one with a doctorate in nothing but logic is ever going to change my mind about that. I also know that animals are resilient and they're going to be okay. Next time it might be different but maybe it won't. Jackie and Shadow are part of nature and nature is uncluttered by logic so they'll just keep on doing the things they were made to do. I'm just grateful to be able to see them in all their beauty even when it's sad. Thank you FOBBV.

There are plenty of studies indicating that they have emotional lives and act within context. Hey..we are animals too. If we came to terms with this humans would have to change their practices. Its just easier to ignore it and keep status quo.

I have some backyard chickens, and they do seem to have thoughts, feelings, and distinct personalities. Some chickens even seem to be friends with each other. I've heard from others that chickens will show signs of sadness and depression when their close friends pass away. I don't know how close birds' feelings are to ours, but they do appear to have them.

@@Itsasmallworld-g8y Yeah, it's hard to read a bird's expressions but I believe that too. It seems pretty late to me but I'm often wrong. lol I'm just going to enjoy them no matter what.

I've been told that, too. But like you, I find it hard to believe that there aren't some feelings that we would call "human". When Shadow continued to go to the nest when Jackie had given up, that showed an unwillingness to surrender. When Jackie came to the nest one night and forced Shadow to leave, seeming to want to be on the nest herself, only to leave after a few minutes, to me that showed her concern for Shadow. And in this video, you could almost feel Shadow's sadness.

@@TheEmaile I was upset over Harriet’s disappearance this year too. However the saga of the eagles in British Columbia that adopted a red tail hawk last year was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. She was brought into the nest alive for the eaglet to kill but instead he protected her and eventually both parents fed her and even continued to care for her even after both birds fledged. It had a tragic ending though because the eaglet was electrocuted; I was broken hearted. Watching these nest cams is often like watching a Shakespearean play, joy and sorrow in equal measure.

@@carmenmartinez2882 Back when Bald eagles, and other raptors like Peregrine falcons were endangered species, wildlife biologists were working to help their populations recover. One method that was used was removing the first clutch of eggs from the nest to be raised in an incubator, in the hope that the Bald eagle pair, or Peregrine falcon pair, etc., would be stimulated to lay a second clutch of eggs that would hatch out to be raised. The method was called ‘double clutching.’ So my hope is that Jackie and Shadow will try again with a second clutch of eggs. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, together with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, had a captive breeding program for Peregrines a short distance from my university (Colorado State) and we visited the program during one of my classes. It was fascinating. So that is what came to mind when the ravens ate the eggs. That said, it was hard to watch Shadow stare into their suddenly empty nest.

Even though the baby is not viable the parents naturally mourn for the baby, because it is still a loss. Are the ravens just natural tormentors? It’s unbelievable how they’re surrounding Jackie. It’s like something out of a Disney movie. Such grace that Jackie has.

I remember last season Spirts Love egg that didn't hatch, he loved that egg, never hatched never, it was like Spirit couldnt leave it, it was so sweet, yet painful. Mom & Dad just dealt with it,the egg was still intact when Spirit fledged. 🙏✝️🙏

Shadow, Our hearts are hurting with yours! Although we don't see Jackie as much I theory is that she is staying away from the nest to heal and get some space from being at the place where they both worked so hard and to not have to feel the pain when looking down at the empty nest too..

They weren't taken. They were undeveloped and abandoned. The ravens did Nothing nut eat something that would've forever decomposed In front of thousands. It was as perfect an ending as possible. Still heartbreaking to wonder how daddy felt.. knowing they had to unplug the life support.

Poor Shadow, he really does look sad. I’m glad the eggs are gone though, maybe now they can try for a second clutch if it’s not too late. Does it look like Shadow has an injury to his beak, or a smear of blood?

    • @trax2011
      @trax2011 Рік тому

Actually, Fiona visited the eggs after they had been abandoned. It’s not clear they could have done something with the then-unbreached eggs. I expected at least one of the squirrels would return to the nest once the ravens had eaten the contents of the eggs and left the one large shell behind. But I never saw either of the squirrels return. The ravens returned today and removed the shell left behind yesterday.

Animals grieve. Some grieve as profoundly as we do. Just because they’re not of the human race, doesn’t mean they aren’t affected by loss. Shadow clearly is and deeply, I’d say. Never underestimate the power of losing that which was held so dear.

I don’t know this but is it possible that it’s just so cold with the snow and all. I mean that’s got to be a reason. The eggs were left several times also.

Shadow just sitting there, repeatedly looking down at the nest - that looks like sadness to me. I cried for him, since I know he can’t and nature instinctually pushes both Shadow and Jackie forward to the next thing… I think they haven’t forgotten this, and it’s why they are clinging longer to those eggs this year, in 2024. J & S are smart birds, and don’t want to see that empty bowl where eggs used to be/should be, so I think they’re resisting their instincts a bit, but I know they won’t be able to do that for long….
