- Today on Tommy's Tonewoods we're looking at some utterly stunning East Indian 'Ceylon' Satinwood from Sri Lanka, Chloroxylon swietenia. There are two types of commonly agreed upon 'true' Satinwoods, West and East Indian. They are fiendishly difficult to tell apart and I am still on the fence as to whether one of these sets us actually Zanthoxylum flavum or 'West Indian'.
Not to be further confused with African or 'Nigerian' Satinwood aka Movingui, we'll cover this in another episode! Is your head hurting yet?
Great episode! I had never heard of satinwood used in acoustic guitars - always love it when I learn something new!
Glad you enjoyed it!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM SANDS
Woah a UA-cam HBD on a random post! That’s left field. Thanks Tom Dalia!

Amazing looking wood!
It’s cool huh!?
Didn't realize you had so many videos. I was looking for Jupiter, didn't find it, but tons of other cool stuff. I hope you continue with the performer series.
Interesting! I’ll post a mega mix
Awesome figure
Sure is
Nice wood!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice wood - interesting sounds from the tap-tone - not too clear from the video - and from your description the smell is really pleasing - aromatic. Love the figuring on the set and the guitar back - awesome. Have you made any classical guitars Tom?
I haven’t but thinking about it!
Reminds me of flamed birch aesthetically, but the sound is amazing. By the way, that shirt sure looks comfy.
Oh yeah this old thing? Sure is!
I've never heard of this wood, but it's really interesting looking.
Btw, it'd be cool to see your whole wood collection, and how you've got it stored/organized. That's one aspect of my shop that needs an overhaul, so I'd be curious to see what your stash looks like.
So does mine!
Have you tried using teak? It’s a nightmare to machine 10% silica by weight but it’s supposed to be as good as rosewood sound wise as it is tremendously dense. I’ve just cut some and it’s lovely pink and gold colours. P.s. also Iroko, which is a beautiful wood to work and looks very nice.
I haven’t, I’m not a huge fan of the look but maybe I should think again!
@@TomSandsGuitars I’ve done a few Iroko guitars and it looks nice the teak is a future challenge. I’d send you a pic but don’t know how to.
Almost looks like graphic treatment from human hands. Would you apply a stain?
Is this wood rare
