Pinning some insight from Mr Druah who helped clarify why Clears / Purples have this issue: "The cause of clears/purples keycaps are these 4 nubs present on the stem of those. The rest of the stem is the same thickness as other cherry switches but it's just those nubs causing issues. You can experiment with that by putting a keycap on while viewing the switch from below and you'll see that when the keycap touches the 4 nubs on the way down, it becomes much harder to press down. While near the top it's pretty easy. Cherry clears were originally meant to be used in industrial settings where the keycaps were never meant to be taken off Cherry/glarses technically aren't wrong when they said "iT woN'T CrACk KeYcAPS" but in practice it's very easy to crack keycaps on purples/clears if you mount them frequently enough or pull them out at a bad angle." Here is an image where you can see these nubs in the middle of the stem: pbs.twimg.com/media/GBFht8qWsAAf3I9.png
this video needs to get out there, not only to introduce clears to more people but to make geon restock the trimmer 😂 I've been waiting for a restock for months

👀👍! really like how the video is structured and organized! love to see long form keyboard videos, especially when it's beautifully shot with nice lighting and good camera angles!
Great material! I've been waiting for someone to document it, as the Geon Trimmer is out of stock. I bought 2 batches, but haven't been using it yet. You made it very clear to me that I have to wait for it a bit. Thanks!
So is the issue Clears or Ergo Clears? I don’t know if I missed something but during the keycap pulling part you said Ergo Clears, but now that there are Cherry factory Ergo Clears, I wasn't sure if it was both or 1 or the other Edit: just checked, looks like my factory ergo clears have a bump in the same place. Never noticed, maybe lucky
A client of mine asked me if MX purple still has this issue, and even though it is fixed, I cannot risk it. The way you pulled those keycaps on stock clears and purple is scary. That tool is useful!
I made a video about this MX Clear issue a few years ago; glad to know that there is now a tool that can fix these stems. Do you find this tool annoying to use because it's blunt and has no sharp cutting edge?
Purples fit tight on some PBTfan PBT caps but none got stuck or anything or cracked the keycaps. Great review, if I used more Cherry switches I would pick one of these up.
@@extrapriuspleaselegit set up a bunch of restock notifications to try to keep an eye out! I think I bought from the first batch of purples, and have been looking for a trimmer ever since (only to not see them in stock anywhere)!
The absolutely best switches that I've ever used are Evergilde Dark Jades / Moyu Black They are just so absolutely godly. I have a keyboard with MX Purples too, but they're just OK. I definitely wouldn't swap my Moyu Black switches for them.
I have old clears and some of my keycaps broke, but I blame the keycaps: they are a very brittle material. I would say in general mechanical switches like cherry are a poor design. the stems are wobbly and allows for forces to be applied on an angle. also the amount of space around the stem is so small that the keycap stem has to be very thin.
Some people really prefer older keycaps like OG doubleshots, but they aren’t for everyone. It’s funny after going from newer switches with very tight stems I prefer the feeling of cherry. All preference though!
I've never heard anyone talk ability Cherry's quality (those weirdly crappy springs lol), but the specific nylon mix they have is definitely something special. Whether or not it's your style is a different question, but it's not debatable that it at least exists and has a fairly unique character
I think I could list more than a handful of reasons why I choose cherry over other brands tbh. Also, I think there’s something really appealing about putting your time into them. Makes it all worth while when they come out how you want.

Honestly straight up. It’s been OOS for so long. Appreciate it a bunch :)
Or to hopefully reach cherry and they fix this issue at the source
Still OOS or they sold out before I could get one :(

Yeah they both have the bump! Ergo clears just have a lighter spring but are the same switch and are considered a new rendition because of this.
great video. I have a bunch of purples and clears and the difficulty of getting the keycaps off without trimming has never been a dealbreaker for me.
Hey thank you! I feel you and like that opinion. I’m the complete opposite and have never used clears without trimming

Nice vid mate, love the commentary, keep it up
Appreciate it!!
Insightful test!
Do you think that using the stem trimmer would work for the hirose orange switches?
Yes I do! I’ve heard of people using this for these switches.
Great video man!
Thanks my dude!!
Could I just sand down those nubs on the stem with a file as an alternative to trying to find a geon stem trimmer?
I wouldn't recommend it sadly... You could see if anyone has one local to you? Or ship your switches to someone who could shave them for you.
you should try to add and remove the keycaps over and over again to see how many cycles it takes for the keycap stem to break
lol I don’t wanna be the one to try this haha
Love this!!
I didn't even know abourt this, good thing I don't have either switch yet...
Highly suggest trying clears or purples if you can trim them!

Probably expensive to retool the stem I would guess. Pinned a comment above with some more context!
