James, I started following you recently and your content has helped me tremendously in a short period of time. I'm just an amatuer with modest gear (while being the biggest fan of my daughter's volleyball team) but I'm very excited about the types of photos I'm able to create for them. Thank your sharing your knowledge. But moreover, while your talent is obvious, I couldn't help but notice your humility and the gratitude you express for others. The world could use more people like you.
Another great video James, especially like the players involvement in the intro. Thanks for always taking the time to make and share these videos, they mean a lot. I will share your video as soon as Facebook comes back up, ha-ha.
Great video, James! I can't tell you how helpful it is to get these insights into the photoshoots. Amazing that even after those complex shootings you still put the time and energy into the videos. Especially liked the intro on that one and the raw BTS shots at the start. Thankful for every video you put out and looking forward to the next one!
James thanks for being so forthcoming with the “how to”. I was the one who tagged you last week for my Judo fighter shoot you inspired me to do! People loved the pics especially his mom!
I'm really appreciative for all the time and effort you put into making these videos. When I open my computer and see your icon on new videos I say "YES"! thanks so much
Found your channel by complete accident, and I'm so happy I did. What you are doing is dream job. I've learned so much already starting to practice on both of my son's soccer teams to build a small portfolio. Thanks for the videos they rock.
Thank you for another great video James. Appreciate so much the time you take to put this content together. Best regards from Brazil! Stay safe out there.
Dear James. I’m so glad that you’ve started to make these videos. I am in media production myself since over 26 years and learned so many things and got inspired a lot because of your videos. I have seen all. Thanks a lot and hopefully I will meet you one time in person. Until this will happen I would wear one of you JQP caps 😉 Greetings from Germany. Joe
It's been a crazy few weeks and I'm glad to FINALLY get out my latest video! More to come, comment for a hat/stickers if you're interested(leave Instagram @ so I can contact you!) and thanks for the support!!
Thanks for the backstage pass to your photo shoot. It’s way above my head right now and don’t have the lighting equipment, but it’s fascinating to watch how you set it up and work it all!!
Hey James, just wanted to say that I love your videos. I’ve been following for a little over a year now, since I got my R5, and your work inspires the heck out of me. Without your UA-cam channel I probably never would’ve learned of you so thank you for sharing. Your content is fantastic and insightful and you shots are unbelievable. You really inspire me to learn everything there is about lighting set ups and off camera flash.
I'm glad i found your channel!! I'm in my first year of my photography business and i can't wait to be operating on your level with the help of your videos!! If you ever come down to Texas, lmk if you'd need extra hands! hehe
Great video. I've been shooting the Houston Rockets media day for several years, and I get some good inspiration from all your videos. My outlet only needs head shots- but as a sports shooter, media day is one of my few chances to do something more interesting than a plain ol headshot. Keep up the great work!
Being a Carolina girl, I love seeing all the teams you photograph in North and South Carolina! Thanks for sharing your tips, tricks and ideas! Wonderful stuff!!
I'm happy when seeing one of my shot's used in a local publication, man to have your work on a Banner at a arena wow just wow! Love the translucent backdrop and backlighting it! Thanks for sharing!
I’m happy I came across your channel! You should tell us about your journey to becoming a sports photographer. And the tips and knowledge you need to know in order to become one
Thanks so much for doing these videos, James. I love the huge back backdrop that was custom made. That's a great idea for my local high school. I need to see if I can create a stenciled version of their logo for something like this. After watching several of these I've added the big boom to my studio and I use it al the time. It's so much easier than a C Stand and boom for maneuverability and overall ease of use. And, I couldn't agree more about tethering. I do all of my tethering wirelessly to an iPad Pro that I send via AirPlay to an Apple TV that displays the photos on a big LCD TV in the studio for my clients to see.
First video I've watched of yours, great content sir. As a sports content creator I would appreciate some insight into the technicals of how you pull of pro shoots when it comes to set ups and camera settings. Damn good job on the photos as well man. Goals for sure
Thanks for the great vid. On tighter shoots that are more run and gun where tethering is impossible, I saddle a 7” hdmi monitor either on the camera’s hot shoe or on a 10’ cord where the client can hold and see. Then recording to 2 internal SD cards gives me a backup copy. I’m loving the new EVF mirrorless cameras for I use focus peaking which eliminates the need to check the work on a tethered computer. The stencil cutout background is a great idea !!
James you are a great photographer and a humble guy. Glad I stumbled upon your channel and glad you make these videos! I am a photographer as well love the behind the scenes stuff. I’d love to see more of them and longer sections of clips. Of course if you are just trying to keep some stuff to yourself, I totally get that too. Either way, keep up the fantastic work!
Sounds like I need to meet this Joel fella! 🤣 Yeah I can't just dump all the content from my shoots here since my clients are paying me for it. They're actually pretty nice to let me do what I'm doing!
@@QuantzPhoto haha sorry about that. AC sucks. But yeah I totally get it. I can’t post probably 90% of what I shoot. Kind of a struggle on the social media front. Definitely enjoy what you do share though!
Another level! Love how genuine you are! Everyone give this man a big thumbs up and subscribe 👍 I do have one question though, what is the marterial you are using for the custom back drop and where can i order it? Cheers
Real good as alwayd, intro was fun and great. Good short info aswell, you sharing greatness. You feel real on the videos and that is the hard one to break i belive 👍 And that hat should be nice to win but understanding if you dont wanna send it here around 9700 kilometers away 😂🙈 Keep it up mr inspiration! Cheers from Sweden 👍
What are you using to cart that iMac around in? om not tethering in Youth sports but that's a huge thing to have to cart around with out it getting damaged.
Very cool, thanks for sharing! If you are willing to share-I'm curious why you chose the strip and the umbrella for the sidelights as opposed to both strips or both umbrellas?
Always loving the ideas and insights. I shoot several sports at a small college and thought about tethering, but I'm afraid the athletes in line for their shots will make the one in front of the camera self conscious, or a show off and then it all slows down. Looking forward to the next video so please, roll that intro soon.
You are WAY good enough to be elitist about your work, but you simply are not. So humble and appreciative. I’m waiting on a workshop to be announced in the future. Great work as always.
I hate to admit this, but I’m at a emotional crossroads with your channel growing lol. Because your super interactive with your followers right now. But if you grow I know that’s going away lol. But I completely understand and it’s crazy that you don’t have way more followers right now. But again recently I only like to follow real working professional. Anyways thank you for the content and great information!
Great BTS video as always. Thanks for the inspiration in all your videos. With everything that goes into a shoot, capturing and documenting the process is just another task so hats off to you. Anyone who thinks a photographers job is "easy" is mistaken. If I may ask, what do you shoot at for these types of portraits? F Stop and SS? I typically try to shoot at F/8 and top out at 1/200, mainly because I don't want to drain my FJ400s using HSS. On outdoor shoots I will have to use it sometimes when battling sun. Just wondering if you use HSS for the motion shots or if your flash power is high enough to freeze it? Thanks again!

@@QuantzPhoto that should be nice and hopefully not so expensive ( Here in sweden everything is expensive) 😂
Great BTS. having Oubre Jr fronting for you was awesome. We in the youth sports industry love your backgrounds.
How long does it take you to get set up for these types of shoots?
What are you using to cart that iMac around in? om not tethering in Youth sports but that's a huge thing to have to cart around with out it getting damaged.
This one was a bit longer - probably 2 hours
It's a Tenba case specific for the iMac
James u for the stationary camera and ur mentioning Chris, Creative Dir. for the Hornets. He's my grandson. Your photos r great.
That's amazing!
A really great video! 💜💜
I want to know wich edition you use it, for the photography at the minute 05:04 ?
Very cool, thanks for sharing! If you are willing to share-I'm curious why you chose the strip and the umbrella for the sidelights as opposed to both strips or both umbrellas?
I touch on that in several of my other BTS videos - mainly because they give a different look.

Yes I did on two of them
Great work love it, all the best en succes .
grzz from Hoogezand Holland
p.s the cap is it for sale ???????
Thanks Jan, not as of right now!
Another great video 👍
Quick question . What settings were you using on the cameras ?
Hey Jesper, I don't have that in front of me but I know 1/200 for the shutter and probably somewhere around f5.6 with 100 iso.
Awesome set up! Quick question: we’re you using a grid on the mobile beauty dish?
No grids on these!

Thanks Earnie, not really my style I guess....In the grand scheme we are only taking pictures anyway. 🤣
how was the honeycomb backdrop made??? looks awesome.
Pretty sure I mention it in the video but a sign company made it.
Great stuff, quick question.... what is the spray you are using to get the fog/smoke look?
It's atmosphere aerosol - amzn.to/3GxvciX
Excellent work as always!!! how do produce the sharpness in your images?
With the Canon R5 it's really the new RF glass for the most part. Other times I might use a little high pass filter to pop them a little!

Thanks JT! Usually 200th of a second while the f-stop will vary and I'm making use of the super fast flash duration to freeze the action.
