My first band was Therion, absolutely fell in love with their sound in the first listen
My very first band was Within Temptation, then I discovered Nightwish, which became my favourite band. When Tarja left, replaced by Anette, I lost some interest in that band. I begann to favour Hammerfall alongside Epica and Within Temptation. When Floor took the stage with Nightwish, I was overwhelmed. Today my favourite band is Nightwish again.
I love Within Temptation and Tarja.

The song "Mother Earth" by Within Temptation, featured in the Anime series "X", was the song that turned me into a metal fan many many years ago.
Today my favourite band is Nightwish, though. Place 2 in this list is quite good, but in my opinion they belong in first place. 😄

Epica is so fun live. Very touching. Followed them through Texas and met them twice. I have so much Epica tour merch. Dimmu is awesome live too.

Transiberian isn't really a metal band because it has elements of a functioning orchestra. It has sections such as string, brass and percussion with the occasional opera soloist. It also has classical music elements. There's a lot of soloist but there not all metal musicians.
I like that the uploader of this video included totally different levels of heavy. I came here looking for different flavours of symphonic metal and I found it.

How come I don't see Tristania in the comments (unless they're classified as gothic metal), albums such as Widow's Weeds, Beyond the Veil, World of Glass are phenomenal. Tiamat's Wildhoney is superb as well 🖤

En este video difiero un poquito; Para mí Haggard es Symphonic Doom Metal (tiene bases de Doom) y Nightwish pueden ser: Symphonic Power Metal. Solamente en el primer album tuvieron algo de Gothic Metal.
Y Epica sería Symphonic Gothic Metal..

Therion started it, Nightwish brought us Tarja, Epica and Floor's bands, Sirenia, Xandria, Dark Sarah and now we have also Ad Infinitum, with the marvelous singer Melissa Bonny. Death- Gothic and Powermetal can also have symphonic influences but would not call it Symphonic Metal.

Maybe that’s because Tarja is far superior and so much better than Floor . That’s just my opinion since I don’t like Floor at all

You know it's nice to know that current music outside of the USA is still good lol. At least one American band is still decent. Most of my fav current artists are not from the USA and a few of them are on this list. I LOVE Symphonic metal. My fav song of all time is still Escapist by Nightwish and I also love Within Temptation and Epica. Bought some of their songs on iTunes.

What would you say the real definition of symphonic metal is?
also Floor is great, huge fan of hers, but nightwish isn't night wish without tarja...I feel like all the what about Floor as nightwish singer are all kids that weren't around for the more than a decade of Tarja and her magnificence
I love Within Temptation but this is the only song I don't like from them, so if I'd heard of them for the first time, I would probably think they are bad.

Curious as to the criteria or measures used to assess rank. Number of record sales, social media fans, concert ticket sales or a combination of a number criteria. I’m surprised that Therion topped bands like Nightwish, WT and Kamelot in this list which leads me to think the ranking is entirely subjective. Which is OK too.
I'm a WT fan but i totally understand and respect this list. I like Therion too.

Where is Xandria?
I really love the bands from the Netherlands; Epica and WT, but the purest of what I would call symphonic metal progressive is Nightwish. The Melodie’s are classically pure, especially the latest album. Some of you power metal fans may not like it but it is wonderfully nature oriented. Floor is incredible, her range is broad, and she can sing anything and fits the band well. Floor is one of the best singers of any genre that I have heard. She loves the music, acts it well as any classically trained singer and loves the audience and inspires the band as well.
Reminds me a lot of Annie Haslam who was the vocalist with the English band Renaissance back in the 70’s, who had a five octave range and was severely hearing impaired as well and were very classically oriented. While not metal in any respect, they are worth listening to as they represent the beginnings of symphonic rock. As a hearing impaired singer myself, Annie imspired me to go for it and I did.

Missing After Forever
Within Temptation are to metal what Celine Dion is to metal. Amaranthe could easily have replaced them in this list and I doubt that anyone would have complained. I get that the symphonic stuff isnt all chugging blastbeats or whatever excites the headbangers but there's a line between metal and pop - they need to leave the latter to Sharon's solo albums IMO.
WT is certainly not pop. They've got a place for their own. They did all kinds of music, and before 2008 it's mostly symphonic metal. The Black Symphony concert is absolutely crazy good.🤘
