Hi. Also a Colorado native. Wow, you nailed it. I figured out wearing layers long ago. It probably looks like I'm homeless and living in my car as the back seat is full of various kinds of jackets, coats, hats and clothing.
Do you have a video about how to" survive" living in Colorado . Whats are the best clothes to wear what is super warn , comfortable shoes, boots that waterproof and warm ?
Lol, we visited Boulder & surrounding area in Spring, and yes, hubby and I went trouping up a mountain hike on a warm sunny day in t shirts & sneakers & suddenly the snow started falling & then we bumped into mitten/coat/snow shoe clad people coming down. It was GORGEOUSNESS !!!!!! But we turned around lol. Fabulous video, thank you..
Glad that UA-cam somehow introduced your video into my queue. I am just looking for January weather info because I need to go up with my son to help moving him into an off-campus apartment in Fort Collins. I am debating whether to bring a bulky snow parka vs just a puffy jacket with hoodie and thermal base layers. Your special spatula or magic wand is great! Now I need to go search the FB group that talks about January weather. Mahalo!
lovely detailed video and I totally agree!! i've lived here 5 years and something that always gets me is how powerful the SUN is here. it can truly be freezing in the shade and then warm in a sunny patch. also, weather fluctuations throughout a given day can be intense. Never trust a 65 degree day in February 😭 Also august and september are usually fire season and things are much less green in this time...and I hear this summer is going to be especially bad.
The tiny bear cub that lives with you (@5:15) is a very cute bear cub. Just saying. I think I have lost all wariness of bears and will adopt a dozen or so to live in my home. Thank you for that tip.
I'm making my 2nd trip to Colorado, the first was in November/December and it was cold and sunny, it snowed but it that too melted :) Now I'm coming in end of 1st week of April for 4 weeks. I chose it because I read that the temperature goes up quite a few degrees compared to March. Even though you are the expert here, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't be needing to wear hats and gloves (and thermals) during my time this time :)
One thing also to keep in mind, you need to use sunscreen all year round in Colorado. Winter is cold, but sunny!! You can easily get sunburn even in December, January, and February. Don’t neglect sunscreen, at high elevations, the UV ray is intense even when it’s cold!
I like the fact that there are four seasons. Western WA is rain, not rain. Cold/cloudy with rain, then suddenly no rain and the sun comes out and temps jump 40 degrees. Can't wait to move. If I never see rain again I would be happy. That said - I LOVE snow!
It sounds like Colorado is a less frigid version of Minnesota with mountains. Weather is all over the place in MN. Snow march april mostly. Cold november to april, then mud, then drought.
Colorado weather is crazy iv'e experienced all 4 seasons in 2 hours funny story i was waiting for the bus once in Denver near the natural history museum which is now the museum of nature and science anyway the bus stop i was at it was cold cloudy windy and snowing i'm wearing a down jacket looking like the state puff marshmallow man from ghost busters down the block it was raining and another block down it was sunny and not a cloud in the sky and another block down there was a rainbow it was odd i thought i was on an acid trip i got on the bus and looked at the bus driver and said this is very strange and he said welcome to colorado i said i know it's just weird he said it can't be explained at all.
Nope, I lived near Lake Tahoe for a while and the snow there is nothing like here in Colorado. When I'd ski there if I'd fall in the powder I would be instantly wet, not so in Colorado. It also takes a lot longer for snow to pile up here. I had a friend who's business was snow removal at Lake Tahoe, it was a busy business for him around Tahoe City. There's not as much moisture in the snow here.
I moved to Colorado for the WeeeeeeEeeed. Nah joking lived her for 12 years due to being stationed at Carson and retiring. Wife is a native. You are spot on, this fall is a blessing.
If you have spring allergies from pollen, you’ll definitely feel it here. Usually in May into June is the highest pollen allergy time. But once it hits mid-June most people don’t feel it anymore.
It really depends on where you’re driving! If you’re not driving directly through the mountains at that time the roads will be mostly fine unless you happen to get caught in a snowstorm. So keep an eye on weather forecast as your trip approaches! In general though, even after a snow our state has great snow plows that clean everything up pretty quick. Mountain driving when there’s snow can be a little trickier depending on where you’re going. Make sure your car has at least good all season tires so you don’t slip.
I'm seriously thinking about moving to Colorado I think it would be a huge change for my family, I am so tired of struggling in the south I'm going to give my children a better chance at life and not live so small minded we have only lived in Alabama all of our lives lol
Be ready for adjusting to elevation. Your body has to get used to it. Once you get over the altitude headaches you will be able to take some of the most beautiful hikes you have ever seen. Be prepared for the wildlife also. I've had my fish taken from me by a bear when I was fishing, it won't happen again.
Is the weather in Boulder and Colorado Springs roughly the same? I’m planning on moving to Colorado next Summer, and I can’t decide which city to move to.
Thank you for this superb and very informative video Genevieve. How does Boulder compare to Denver, in terms of weather, is it pretty much as you've described here or slightly different? I'm planning on flying into Denver for a road trip around late March/early April (which you kind of mentioned are very unpredictable months), but only staying there maybe one or two nights as I'll be heading up towards WY or if the weather turns sour, south to Santa Fe, then West into AZ, then up into UT and canyon country. It's just that Denver seems very central for my planned road trip. This year I flew into LA and my road trip started there and then I headed east into NV, UT, AZ, and the weather was a mix, but mostly very sunny.
Hello. So we had a trip planned for december but had to change it to mid november. What kind of clothing do you think we would need? Is there any snow in breckenridge or none at all? TIA
Bring mostly winter clothing but a few fall outfits too. (Also at least one outfit for warmer weather just in case.) I don't live in Breckenridge so can't say about the weather.
Colorado weather sounds similar to ORegon. We are very bipolar too. It is spring right now (early April) and just two days ago it was in the 70’s hot like summer, then the next day it feels like winter. I have never been to Colorado but am looking to visit there in June/July.
I have visited Oregon many times and even looked for land to retire on. There is a big difference between Oregon winters and Colorado winters in that the snow here doesn't have as much moisture contend and yours. I have skied in Oregon and powder there is not like powder here. I did not buy land in Oregon because to many from california moved there and ruined that state.
We have just sold our home Southern CA home. We will be headed to Colorado (without a home, staying in a long term Air BnB) as of apprx March 1. We are super scared. Lived in CA all of our lives. Headed to the Aurora/Parker area.
My limited experience in the inter mountain west is to avoid spring - it's too crazy, avoid summer - it's too hot, and shoot for September before the first snow falls at high elevations. Then survive winter by skiing as much as possible. I still think CO is my promised land & thanks for the local perspective. You didn't mention shortness of daylight in winter... seems Denver is same latitude as southern Ohio, so hibernation mode kicks in pretty hard with the time change in November?
Very good question bringing up sunlight! Yes, in Colorado during the dead of Winter (December) the sun doesn’t come up til close to a 7am and sets as early as 4:30pm. 🥶 But in the summer (June) we get long sunny days with the sun rising around 5am and setting close to 9pm.
If you live in Colorado you need to see the seasons as what they really are. Winter is the life giving time of year. Without winter nothing survives and I don't mean just in Colorado, I mean everywhere that depends on the rivers flowing from Colorado. Spring is the time that life springs forth, have you ever watched a new fawn being born, and summer is when spring matures. Fall is beautiful but the advance of winter is always on your mind. Fall is a time when you learn to wear layers of clothing. It's cold in the morning and as the day progresses you have to remove layers to stay cool and then put them back on as the day goes on. The beauty of the fall is apparent in so many places in Colorado but as an old time friend of mine once told me, "You can't eat the view." If you move here you have to be ready to work hard cuz it's not an easy place to make a living. We like outgoing folks that are willing to be self employed.
I like how the title is understanding Colorado weather, but I literally don’t think you can(which you stated). For example, it once rained when there were absolutely no clouds in the sky. That’s Barely scratching the surface.

Also would say August is lots of rain as well and people always say we have "all the seasons" but we really have winter and summer and a few weeks of spring and fall. Basically April and may bring beautiful purple and pink trees and then the snow storm comes and knocks all the flowers off. We get beautiful red and orange and yellow trees at the end of September or beginning of October and then the snow comes and the trees are bare. Always prepare for crazy weather!
