Back in the 70’s we had small farm. We were milking cows, had some pigs and so on. One a moonlighting fireman came to deliver fuel oil. Apparently he didn’t know the difference between a buried tank filler pipe and a well head for water. He had to take his pipe wrench and unscrewed the cover on the well and put in 10 gallons before he realized his mistake. He left no note. So we get home and flush the toilet a few times and run it through the house pipes. They ended up flushing 10,000 gallons of chlorine through the well to flush all the oil out. We had to haul water for all the animals.
I have watched a few videos on disinfecting a well. None however seem to address how the bacteria got in the well in the first place. If you don't find and stop the source of contamination you'll be doing this in a never ending cycle!
Good comment. Bacteria comes from a surface water source. You likely will never be able to prevent it so you would then install a UV system to kill the bacteria. See ua-cam.com/video/723XDGMP-28/v-deo.html
You should use small chlorine tablets in the well so they sink further down, liquid bleach will not sink as far. Also, running water in the home through the pipes after chlorinating is a great way to plug things up especially with an iron filter and/or softener on bypass.
Please let me know how / why it plugs it plugs things up so I can understand what you mean by that and how to avoid. Should we not flush the water after putting in the chlorine tablets? We don’t have an iron filter or softener.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Wrong. You should use a chlorine injector on a well with contaminates that have any amount iron, and sometimes retention is needed as well. A UV light will not help if there is any amount of iron in the water due to the iron shielding the contaminates from the UV.

Great question! If your water coming into your well has bacteria you will need to install an Ultraviolet disinfection system to keep the bacteria from getting into your house. When you install a UV system you will need to chemically disinfect all of you household plumbing to make sure you kill all of the bacteria that is downstream of the UV. You are correct that if you have bacteria coming into your well , if all you do is chemically disinfect the bacteria will keep coming back.

A forced chlorination is when we bring 550 gallons of heavily chlorinated water and wash down the inside of the casing. This method is very effective in sanitizing wells that have a heavy amount of bacteria, wells with a high yield or wells that are over 300’ deep.
Disinfecting a well defies the whole point of having one. Might as well just drink tap water. If you have harmful bacteria in the well, the best thing to do is to look for the cause of that. A looked after well should naturally not have harmful bacteria.

I replenish my bacteria daily
Please dont do the hot water. It will take 100s of gallons to flush out a water heater .
Not hundreds but some, yes. If you don’t do it you will have problems
Didn't work when a water solution company did mine; I redid it according to your way, tested with chlorine strips to make sure all was gone, no e coli but bacteria still present. water was tested 24 hrs after a clean sample catch. Now what? Well has been bleached 3 times. Flushing it out this weekend for 3 hrs daily for 4-5 days before another water test for bacteria. Help! 4" well casing w/breathable well cap (was cleaned, sand blasted, repainted) well is 48' deep. Septic on other side of house 75 ft away. No love stock in area, but I do live on a river, where recent flooding occurred, last few years farmers putting in tiles into fields w/run off coming down hills into river. Help plz
I was MORE thorough than the company who did it the first time, I used the test stripes to test for chlorine, whoh came thru every which came thru every facuet , solution sat in pipes 24 hrs before flushing.
I don't have a UV light system, the company who flushed out my well & pipes the first time, which didn't work, wanted to repeat the procedure, but he did suggest he could install a UV light (in the well, IDK, he didn't explain it) just said he would charge me $1200.00...Uh, no thanks, I am selling this home & I know the water has to pass the testing.
why are there no videos of a forced chlorination on youtube??
A forced chlorination is when we bring 550 gallons of heavily chlorinated water and wash down the inside of the casing. This method is very effective in sanitizing wells that have a heavy amount of bacteria, wells with a high yield or wells that are over 300’ deep.
We charge $300-%500 depending on the accessibility...
We charge 300-500 depending on location, depth, etc...
Disinfecting a well defies the whole point of having one. Might as well just drink tap water.
If you have harmful bacteria in the well, the best thing to do is to look for the cause of that. A looked after well should naturally not have harmful bacteria.
WHY DIDN'T YOU DO IT? SHOW HOW
IT'S DONE
Are you a licensed well technician Gary… You know you cannot be working on wells unless you have a well technician license eh.. If it is your own home it is a different story.
I am not a licensed well technician. I don't work on wells, this is just a one off at my house.
@@GarytheWaterGuy I like your videos though Gary. Great work!
Um... ya... do yourselves a favor; do not follow any of these "instructions "
Really why, what is wrong with them?
