Sweden had a few colonies, one of them was New Sweden in todays Deleware river towards the coast and lasted for 17 year (1638-1655). The logghouses exist still today in USA so they had a lasting imprint. The colony was conquered and taken over by the Neatherlands. Many of the inhabitants of this settlement where also people from Finland or finnish speaking swedish people. Whats interesting is that the Swedish settlers had good relations with the Natives I think they where called the Susquehannock in the area and trading guns to them and also had an agreements for trading pelts. The reasons for them essentially being the settlements protectors was how the firearms helped them wage a war against an alliance of natives. They even sided with New Sweden against the Neatherlands in the take over of the colony and was very protective of it due to the benefits they got from trading.
Fun fact: We still use the sod roofs here in Norway (and I imagine Sweden as well), although not super common everywhere in the country there are regions that still uses them.
I always loved them. Nothing like spawning in a army of musketeers and a giant cannon to send in to destroy your enemy. Or two factories to give you near infinite resources.
I’m actually looking forward to trying out the Swedes. People often forget Sweden was once a superpower that rivaled almost all of the other European powers in the 17th-early 18th Century
Just started watching your channel 2 weeks ago thanks to my younger than myself uncle. We loved age 2 as kids and it blows my mind that there is still so much appreciation for the game! Love your channel and hugely appreciate your guides, very detailed, informative and fun to watch.
Fandom never died. I fact Aoe 3 fandom created in the last years amazing mods like Wars of Liberty with more than 20 new civs!! That type of dedication is incredible, especially knowing we are a smaller community.
looking forward to this. . . i remember trying to play AOE3 a few years back but could never get into an online game. . . all the old players just auto kicked me screw em'
@@firebird4491 The thing is that there is a lvl system, and if u join higher level ofc u will be kicked. The community considers lvl 0- 13 as a noob range. It's definitely the kind of game that would benefit from a modern discord server to coordinate games and rooms. Jumping into a 13 year old game blind with so few players is rough
How are the custom game settings looking? Have they added options like population limit or map size? Is it still only 2 teams or no teams, and only 1 player per civ (in single player)?
@@Thescott16 The feel I got from playing the beta is that they focused heavily on the online multiplayer gameplay. And I also guess the campaign mode (wasn't available in the beta, or at least I didn't see or play it).
@@princelynocare1861 Well there goes my purchase and my hope for that game... Since at least half of players barely play online multiplayer or don't play it at all; they just play random maps against the AI by themselves (look at AoE 2 DE stats if you want proof of that). If AoE 3 DE's team is just focussing on the online multiplayer then they're ignoring half their audience, which will affect their bottom line and the game is going to suffer for it.
I always preferred AOE3 too AOE2, because of the home city feature and how much uniqueness their is between civs, especially with the later factions. But their were some problems I had with it. The unit cap was one. While it was 200 hundred, many units cost more then one population. Calvery, artillery, mercenaries, special villagers, and several infantry. It could range from two to six population slots for just one unit. The maps were just not as fun as two's. Their was no real randomness like you could get in two, and you could increase or decrease the size of the maps. With only a select ones getting a larger version. They always felt the same, with the only real difference was your placement on the map. Any if you were playing with the max of eight, on some maps you would be placed within two dozen or so tiles of your allies. Their just wasn't any room. The defenses, besides the fort, mostly felt useless after raids ended. Walls barely ment anything, besides a slight slow down, and towers were just limited to eight max, with castles being limited to just four. And the only reason forts felt like a problem, was because the AI loved to park them in the middle of the map with a army standing right next to it. The resource gathering was to simple. No strategy, besides defending them, involved most of the time. They don't need to drop off resources, with every one just teleported to your stockpile.
I can't wait for it. I was expecting more civilizations, modifications and campaigns (an Inca campaign got example) but I think it's ok. There might be more expansions. Now it's the turn of Age of Mythology.
Concerning the Sweds, they were madlads in AoE III's timeset. They invented pretty much everything about the warfare. It's called the "Era of Great Power", translated to "STORMAKSTID" !
But wasn't Swedish fighting on the battlefields just a further development of the Dutch checkered (maniple styled) formations/methods (which were a reaction to the Spanish Tercios)? Still very hyped tho
@@bartelvandervelden9894 Well you can see the napoleonic warfare as a turbotercio strategy. Still, there are many strategies, equipment and drilling process he invented/chose. Gustavus was a complete madlad
Just a minor correction; the Gustavian period is not referring to Gustavus Adolphus. It's the name for the reigns of kings Gustavus III and IV half a century after the end of the Era of Great Power.
From what I see in the footage, it appears to me that the biggest improvements are the textures and ambient occlusions. I'm excited for this though. I loved AoE 2, but I think I spent a lot more time playing AoE 3 growing up. I used to play online almost every night after school religiously. I would play against randos mostly, but I had a few online friends and we'd XP farm. Definitely was a fun game, and the online community was great back then. I know now there's a small-ish AoE3 community, but I haven't played it online in over 10 years so I don't know anything about the current community.
I always loved the physics based Age3 canon mechanics. Can't wait to play it again with an active player base since the first time it died pretty quickly.
I would really love to know if they added simple game changes such as 4 teams, random civ button instead of having to choose a civ, more maps, how many of these 'historical battles' there will be, what troop balances there were(if any, namely gendames) and if they got rid of damn cav boxes
I would love to see you start doing regular videos exploring AOE III strategy and civilizations overviews. I still play AOE II Def Ed but I really want to get into III Def Ed for something different
First off I love the loyalty to their fans with the steam discounts, second I like that they’re making 3 kinda similar to AOE 2, and they’re so quick with the release dates! I feel like AOE 2 came out a few months ago... can’t wait to play it!
Yeah, those Sod roofs are really common here in Scandinavia and fits very well with Sweden. Something very common on those sort of log houses that is pictured.
there is a mod called Wars of Liberty where you can at least play all those factions and more in MP, if you have a friend or more you can play with them either aoe3wol.com/
Yeah, a big miss in AOE3 is that it only focus on colonies and never depict things happened in Europe itself. As one of the few historical RTS games covering that era, it is such a pity.
Great game, very fun, if this game wasn't a named Age of Empires people wouldn't complain that is too complex and have to many game mechanics. My only concern is how the would they balance for ranked PvP and I hope we get all the decks a soon as we start playing
too complex? are you serious? I thought the game was too sloopy and easy to play, you clearly haven't played the game at all! or you are either stupid, it is not the best aoe but it's certanly not complex
@@solace6633 sry if I was harsh but it's the truth, the game ain't complex, for aoe 2 players it is because they are not used to and they don't want to learn how to play it either, the viper I think is the only one that played the campaign ang got used to the game
@@gastonhitw720 no. Its because the factions are truly diverse. They dont all share the same shell with different bonuses but sometimes have completely different mechanics. Coupled with the home-city mechanic, that makes the game less sleek than AoE2 and balancing more difficult.
I hope SotL comes around to reviewing the civs and units of AoE3. That would complete the next to last item to complete my full wish list regarding this game. The only other was seeing the Italians and the Poles as playable civs in this game.
Is anyone else eager for the possibility of more expansions for AoE III? Africa is criminally overlooked I think. Morocco, Asante, Dahomey, Sokoto, Njinga, Kongo, Hausa, and others are all worthy candidates.
I mean, as a Moroccan I was happy they included the berbers in aoe 2, because my people did have a big impact of the world throughout antiquity until the late middle ages.. But most of Africa was kinda absent from the colonial age onward.. Which aoe3 covers.
Yeah I definitely want to RP as Killmonger while over running red coats as the Swahili or whoever. If MS is listening I'm already willing to pay out a second 20 dollars for any subsaharan African civs.
A nation from the Barbary Coast, focused on raiding, could have an interesting gameplay. I think an european extension is possible by adding - Austrians (possibly rework the Germans since they have a bohemian war wagon from the Hussite Wars) - Poles - Italians In Asia I'd add Persians and Manchus (though maybe redundanct with China since they formed the Qing dynasty)
@@housshil3675 Absent only in popular history. If you asked the average person what was happening in Africa during the AoE III time frame, most people could point to the slave trade but probably little else. A lot of people assume Africa was colonized right away, like the Americas, but for 90% of the continent this wasn't the case until the very late 1800s, like 1870 on, which is at the very tail end of AoE III. There's a lot there - its just overlooked. And I'd say Morocco deserves a spot - the Saadi dynasty saw the limelight early in this period, 1500s-1600s, defeating both the Portuguese and the Songhai in succession. And places like Fez saw a bit of a renaissance after receiving Muslim and Jewish refugees from the conclusion of the Reconquista in Spain.
Including Historical Battles over a new campaign is pretty fair, honestly. The campaign of both Vanilla and War Chiefs were a specific fictional story, that of the Black household, spanning a few generations. Asian Dynasties had to buck the trend, though, but at least one of them still went for fiction in the americas. EDIT: Personally, I'd like to see an option to use a HUD more reminiscient of the old version. Even if the 8 Gigabyte RAM demand is presently beyond me, it would be nice for that to be a thing.
I wouldn't worry too much about ram, I think the recommended specs are only for 4k, and max graphical options at the most, and 8 GBs if you just want the basic low resolution stuff.
It's probably supposed to be poison arrows or something. Which is a bit odd, the only archers the Incas had were mercs from the Amazon. The inca regular army primarily used slings as their ranged weapons.
this is DOPE!! it would've been even more awesome if they had included another new Asian civ though. Maybe Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Khmer or Korea?
Yeah, I'm from Indonesia. According to Wikipedia, Indonesia has many historical because The Netherlands (Dutch) invasion to Nusantara (Indonesia) and they called them Dutch Indie. They colonization to Indonesia for 350 years, since Dutch civilization already playable in AOE 3 vanilla. In a game AOE 2, they were called Malay civilization which include Malaysia, Indonesia, southern Thailand, Singapore but campaign scenarios focused to Gajah Mada and Hayam Wuruk. So in game AOE 3, Indonesian civilizations has only mods 'Struggle of Indonesia'. Myanmar also has history during British invasion like India. Bring Koreans civilization for expansion DLC because they impressed to Hwacha and turtle ship and Joseon Dynasty. Also bring korean wonders like Asian Dynasties such as Hwangyongsa, Namdaemun Gate, etc... Sorry just only know that civilization...
0:44 Is this still true? I can't find any mention of an enhnaced graphics pack for AOE3DE anywhere. Not on the store page, option in the game, or any news about it online. Did they change their minds?
Fascinating I never noticed the mughal city. That's a nice graphical update. Hopefully they have a pitch setting so you can change your plane. As well as idk add the sky
It looks fab! Two new civs is way better than I was expecting, especially the quality & unique character they’ve clearly given both the Swedes & Inca. I’d really like to see an option to disable batch building for multiplayer, and the ability to play with fixed Home Cities (both of these I’d consider analogous to Age2’s alternative formats such as Empire Wars or 500 pop). It would also be amazing to see more civs in the future. Notable civs I think definitely warrant an include are the Haida (also known as the “Vikings of the Pacific Northwest”, famed globally for their totem poles), the Moroccans (Morocco was a major rival of both Spain & Portugal throughout this era, and it was only after Iberian expansion into the new world that they truly gained the upper hand), Ghana (Ghana was the major player in west Africa during the period of Age3, and it was their unfortunate history of slave taking which inspired the European Triangle Trade), Austria (one of the Great Powers of Europe at the time, and a major rival to France & Prussia), and Arabia (this would be the most ahistorical civ, since Arabia was ruled by the Ottomans at the time. However the two groups had very different cultures and Arab revolts were common especially those concentrated around the holy cities of Mecca & Medina) It would also be great to see “Germany” renamed to “Prussia” to more accurately model what the in game civ represents. They could have a Revolution option “German Unification” which renames the civ to “Germany” and boosts their signature unique units.
I know AoE3 gets a bad wrap for it's inferiority to Aoe2, but it actually did do some pretty cool things. I liked the treasures in the early game, and the fact that forests weren't this weird impassable thing in Aoe2. I also liked being able to train units by fives, and some other things too. I'm not a fan of gold being farmable- kind of changes the dynamic of games (so everything is a trash unit in AoE3?) and every villager just collecting resources as they gather rather than needing to drop off.
I personally love the fact that coin isn't fundamentally different than the other ressources. Wouldn't make too much sense in the age of gold fleets, plantations and industrial production, right? Wood is still collected faster and can be upgraded quite cheaply while infinite coin collection at a decent rate requires a bunch of quite costly upgrades.
You can "farm"gold, yes, from plantations, but they are insanely expensive to build and the gather rate is horrible. Best way to get trickle gold is calling in factory cards.
for me I don't think it is inferior, I mean for players that have been playing nothing else than AOE 2 of course they'll say that, they don't know anything else! they are comfortable watching and playing the game, for years and years, this game just feels completely different, but it has a good multiplayer, there are top players either,. In this DE they could change some fundamental parts of the game, like "no ballistic by default", not a "super early aggression"(in mp you have to attack your enemy very early on) changing units building chain, changing the card to a more "balanced use" etc etc... but for me the normal AOE 3 is fun, different and definetely a good game, the campaign is enjoyable too
I really liked AoE 3. I like the timeframe, the more diverse civs and the homecities. Sooo I am really hyped for the definitive edition. Thank you for covering it. :D
I've just gotten in to AoE II and I love it so much. Takes me back to my countless hours in Warcraft III.. I didn't even know about the third one until just now so it's safe to say I'll be buying it now!!
I remember my first and only time playing AOE 3 multiplayer. Start the game. Doing my thing. Realize I can import stuff. Hey cool, early troops, that's ni- 5min into the game a full stack army shows up and wipes me out. Turns out higher-level people can import a lot more troops... Not exactly a balanced experienced.
You can make an early-game-focused deck, and stomp early. If you fail, you'll be left vulnerable for the late game. You can also make a late-game-focused deck, but you risk exposing yourself to early troop imports. And so on.
The game devs actually realised this mistake, and they created a thing called xp mod. U start a game with someone with xp mod, play for a min, resign and u reach lvl 100 instantly. And if u remake other civs, they will also be lvl 100. Also difference is not really big, like 1 or 2 more units.
@@_Doskii I think it's more common in the north, though I may be wrong about that. You want to look for old log houses. If you really want to find any, I suggest looking for hembygdsgårdar around Sweden, as quite a few I've visited have had at least some grass roofed log houses. More modern examples can be found in, for example, Storlien: i.ibb.co/44WhMhk/storlien.jpg
@@Dueilangoisseus That might explain it. I'm usually in the southern half of the country. Looks pretty nice though. But don't the roots slowly damage the roof beneath?
@@_Doskii I don't know how they do it nowadays, but historically they used birch bark between the roof and the soil above. It is water-proof and would last about 30 years or more, depending on how many layers of birch bark used.

You can choose your religion with most factions, this could be the case. Don't remember if that changed your church or all that was a mechanic from WoR, I recall making my Mexican faction protestant.
My first question is if you can switch to the old UI, lol. Shouldn't be too hard to implement. Okay, no Prussia/Austria split, I guess they remade it quite conservatively and didn't change much about the existing civs. I'm only a little bit salty. I assume you won't be able to use the old custom maps? A way to convert them to the new format as well as one to take over your old home city files would be amazing fanservice.

The reasons for them essentially being the settlements protectors was how the firearms helped them wage a war against an alliance of natives. They even sided with New Sweden against the Neatherlands in the take over of the colony and was very protective of it due to the benefits they got from trading.
Which is why they are justified in adding them
Fun fact: We still use the sod roofs here in Norway (and I imagine Sweden as well), although not super common everywhere in the country there are regions that still uses them.

Man the Swedes! Carolous rex album from Sabaton is gonna play in the back everytime I play them.
I didn't expect this amount of improvement
You know you could edit the unit costs and population limits via the proto XML file?
I can't wait for it. I was expecting more civilizations, modifications and campaigns (an Inca campaign got example) but I think it's ok. There might be more expansions. Now it's the turn of Age of Mythology.

Concerning the Sweds, they were madlads in AoE III's timeset. They invented pretty much everything about the warfare. It's called the "Era of Great Power", translated to "STORMAKSTID" !
100%. I've been so hyped for the Swedes that I had to install Empire Total War which I've barely played just to sesh Sweden
But wasn't Swedish fighting on the battlefields just a further development of the Dutch checkered (maniple styled) formations/methods (which were a reaction to the Spanish Tercios)? Still very hyped tho
@@bartelvandervelden9894 the swedes designed modern warfare, you can read about it in the thirty years war
@@bartelvandervelden9894 Well you can see the napoleonic warfare as a turbotercio strategy. Still, there are many strategies, equipment and drilling process he invented/chose. Gustavus was a complete madlad

I would play against randos mostly, but I had a few online friends and we'd XP farm. Definitely was a fun game, and the online community was great back then. It's been confirmed somewhere that all cards will be available from the start.

@@gastonhitw720 no. Its because the factions are truly diverse. They dont all share the same shell with different bonuses but sometimes have completely different mechanics.
Coupled with the home-city mechanic, that makes the game less sleek than AoE2 and balancing more difficult.

I'll definitely be picking it up and giving it a fair shake. I do remember enjoying the campaigns especially!
I think an european extension is possible by adding
- Austrians (possibly rework the Germans since they have a bohemian war wagon from the Hussite Wars)
- Poles
- Italians
In Asia I'd add Persians and Manchus (though maybe redundanct with China since they formed the Qing dynasty)
Wars of Liberty has you covered unless they release DLC for this game, which I'd honestly be fine with. Would love to see more civs
The Swedes are being added 15 years after the original game was released... FIFTEEN YEARS HAVE I BEEN WAITING TO SIT UPON MY THRONE
And just when you're about to sit, Jon Snow snokes you with his dagger.
sweds are included in AoE3 Wars Of Liberty

However the two groups had very different cultures and Arab revolts were common especially those concentrated around the holy cities of Mecca & Medina)
It would also be great to see “Germany” renamed to “Prussia” to more accurately model what the in game civ represents. They could have a Revolution option “German Unification” which renames the civ to “Germany” and boosts their signature unique units.
cant wait!

Wood is the valuable resource in aoe3. It's also gathered at a very slow base rate.
You can "farm"gold, yes, from plantations, but they are insanely expensive to build and the gather rate is horrible. Best way to get trickle gold is calling in factory cards.
Wood is the most valuable resource and pretty scarce in some maps, also slow collecting rate (unless you play Indian)
for me I don't think it is inferior, I mean for players that have been playing nothing else than AOE 2 of course they'll say that, they don't know anything else! they are comfortable watching and playing the game, for years and years, this game just feels completely different, but it has a good multiplayer, there are top players either,. In this DE they could change some fundamental parts of the game, like "no ballistic by default", not a "super early aggression"(in mp you have to attack your enemy very early on) changing units building chain, changing the card to a more "balanced use" etc etc... but for me the normal AOE 3 is fun, different and definetely a good game, the campaign is enjoyable too
Thanks for telling

It wasnt all an imported army lol
though it has been said now that all cards are available at the start you don't need to level up a home city anymore.
Spanish without unction
You can make an early-game-focused deck, and stomp early. If you fail, you'll be left vulnerable for the late game.
You can also make a late-game-focused deck, but you risk exposing yourself to early troop imports.
And so on.
The game devs actually realised this mistake, and they created a thing called xp mod. U start a game with someone with xp mod, play for a min, resign and u reach lvl 100 instantly. And if u remake other civs, they will also be lvl 100. Also difference is not really big, like 1 or 2 more units.
