Music studios like to block videos for using 6 seconds of an artist’s music. What they gain from doing this, I don’t know, but they do it. If there’s any parts where there’s no audio, the reason is because it was removed to keep the video up. Thanks for watching guys 👍
Lawsuit?
Comedy rock?
Haven't they heard of fair use?
I just want to ask if what kind of genre in rock music is the band MICHAEL LEARNS TO ROCK is???
@@galvanjoearmstrong1556 never heard of them but wikipedia says soft rock
"What kinda music do you like"
"Rock"
"Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?"
Atleast it put the person a ball park. Lets them know you’re more rock oriented.
Yes but almost every band I like has a different genre of rock, am I supposed to name every band I like then?
I mean in the end its an Evolution. And most people who like rock music r listening to most of this ^^
Matthew is that you?
Batman beyond niceeeeee
Here’s a genre that I’ve heard people talk about, but I still don’t think it’s that common of a term and that’s Blue Collar Rock, some examples are Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bryan Adams. Rock that can relate to the working class man.
That’s called Heartland Rock
Some newer examples would be The War On Drugs, The Killers, The Gaslight Anthem, Sam Fender, and Ryan Adams to name a few. Glad to see the genre mentioned!
@@thomasobrien1841 Heartland rock or Americana. Either way, definitely one of my favorite subgrenres of rock.
It's working class of USA mostly, there is also Oi! which share similiarties, to it's listener base
@@thomasobrien1841 I thought that was more Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac's later stuff
Calling the poppiest song of The Cure "Just Like Heaven" a Gothic Rock is blasphemy.
A more accurate example would probably be "A Forest", or perhaps "Spellbound" by Siouxsie & The Banshees.
DaFuq?!?!?!
@@honeycomblord9384 I love both those songs
I guess they threw in the most popular examples for the genre of each band
@@Hallorenzo but the cure with just like heaven not sound goth. The cure sound gothic in the 2nd 3rd and 4th album. With 5th album sound psychodeliic, then pop rock. In the album just like heaven theres "dark" songs but...just like heaven is not even closer from that.

When Heavy metal is the least heavy of the metals
Emo is when you're sad.
Psychedelic rock is when you're stoned.
Gothic rock is when you're a goth.
Shoegaze is when you're a sad stoned goth.
I just like shoegaze because it’s calming
Black metal is when you’re a Scandinavian pagan who despises Abrahamic religions
@@juanjoyaborja.3054 lol
@Jonathan M. I haven't ever done recreational drugs before but I'm pretty sure if you're on an acid trip then you qualify as stoned lol, also stoner rock isn't necessarily psychedelic, it's just hard rock with a desert-y feel and sometimes a bit of a wall of sound
@@yourcommentisntfunnyv2709 Nice pfp, great album

The absolute best for psychedelic rock is Ozric tentacles. If you don’t believe me listen to one of their songs called “dissolution”
Acid Rock is a type of Psychedelic Rock
They probably missed alot of punks. Like hardcore punk, gothic punk, horror punks, skate punks, post punk, proto punk. Hope there's a part 2 for this
Punkabilly, psychobilly, gothabilly, rockabilly and neo rockabilly.

I was waiting for this, but I gotta give some love to orchestral rock. Forms of rock obviously overlap with other genres, but I've always loved how traditional, classical music and rebellious rock can combine to create beautiful complex pieces of art. Notable examples are Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Moody Blues, and The Beatles.
Supertramp too
Or Queen, for example Who Wants to Live Forever is beautiful as orchestral
listen to godspeed you! black emperor
And syphonic/power metel like dream theater and nightwish

3:27 the band logo is somewhat harder to read so its a reasonable mistake but the "band" you used for black metal is actually called "Bathory" not "Barbory", also Bathory is more of a one man project than a band.
that is why it's called a "one man band"
It's the ZZ Top covering Bathory
And it's not even Quorthon on the photo, it's Morbid Angel.

Surprised quite a few rock subgenres were missing when you opted to put in genres that were clearly metal.
Math rock, hardcore, post hardcore, punk (ie rock punk) and the incredibly large umbrella of alt rock wasn't touched. That's just a few examples, you've also got all the EDM/rock genres which could fill an entire video
Alternative/Indie has so many genres and scenes inside it, author probably took his inspiration from "wrong generation" posts.
You do relize that matal is just a sub genre of rock itself
@@Gino_andTonic They both have diverged beyond recognition.

The band is probablh one of underrated band out there, their song was such good, must listening especially their first album, Music from big pink
Absolutely! I love them.
I consider their first two albums to be some of the best of all time, right up there with some of The Beatles best stuff.
They are fucking legends.
I've lived my whole life not knowing rock n roll and rock were different things
Rock n' Roll are the old, softer songs of the Rock genre as a whole. Singers of Rock n' Roll are Chuck Berry, Chubby Checker, Nat King Cole, and Little Richard just to name a few.
In fact, "rock" is short for "rock 'n' roll. And even Dave Grohl and AC DC called their music rock 'n' roll, even though it wasn't like the '50s. If you take Chuck Berry and Dave Grohl they have in common they all rock in general. But they played in different eras.

One that nobody really talks about but everyone's heard is Power Pop
Born in the late 60s and popular from the early to mid 70s to mid 80s, this genre features driving, fun, and relatively simple songs that are based off of pop rock, garage rock, rockabilly, punk, and British invasion groups, with a bit of later new wave influence. Think My Sharona by The Knack, What I Like About You by The Romantics, and 867-5309 by Tommy Tutone. You could also throw acts like Cheap Trick, later Kinks, and Billy Squier in the same list
I think you forgot alternative rock, for example U2, INXS, R.E.M and the Cramberries.
The amount of rage in my system that I experienced when the chilli peppers weren’t used for funk rock is immeasurable
this is gonna sound real pretentious, but you definitely aren't much of a funk rock fan if you have a problem with funkadelic being the prime example of funk rock
@@frullmusic Haha nah nah, I’m willing to admit that I’m a basic ass guy with basic ass taste, the chilli peppers are like ground floor for funk rock I’m sure there much more to explore there.
@@kappers3773 the problem is... funkadelic were the ones who kinda started funk rock....

@1:05 - Poor Jimmy Hendrix. His time in this video got cut short.
If someone says, "I love rock because it's so rich", say him that every genre has so much subgenres as rock does
At 0:32 that's the right band but the wrong people,it's the first iteration of the band, but I'm still glad that that's in there though
Glad that you included King Crimson, man of culture 💯
I went into this thinking that Prog wouldn’t even be on the list but I’m so glad it was. Just wish it wasn’t the one song everyone thinks of when they think of Prog but eh kinda the point. The genre is just too wide with too many sub genres tbh.
Man, you forgot Country rock, my personal favorite!
I once told a co-worker I like Rock music, he said me too! Then he proceeded to play what sounded like someone murdering animals with an electric guitar.
Next time I need to be more specific. Garage/Punk Rock :)
Psychedelic rock, experimental rock, art rock, progressive rock and krautrock are the ones I like the most.

The Strokes are more Garage Rock Revival than Indie Rock. For Indie i will chose Modest Mouse or Car Seat Headrest

4:26: You, sir, are my friend for life.
Rock is one of the most diverse music genres ever. You can choose by different styles.
My favorite genres:
Hard Rock
Psychedelic Rock
Metal
Alternative Rock
Blues rock
Punk rock
Britpop
Some additions (I don't know much about punk genres:
Power Metal (Blind Guardian)
Prog Metal (Dream Theatre)
Djent (Meshuggah)
Goth Metal (Tiamat)
Folk Metal (Agalloch or Amon Amarth)
Funk Metal (Faith no More)
Avante Garde Metal (Mr Bungle)
Comedy Rock (Frank Zappa)
Alt Metal (Primus)
Horror Punk (Misfits)
Its clear that he is not that well informed in metal. Orr he decided to not include metal that much but that makes me question why they included thrash, heavy, death etc. Weird for sure
Also power metal and doom meta ftw! Blind guardian is the greatest band ever to exist hands down.

Here is what I think of when I hear some of these genres.
Rock - Elvis
Arena Rock - Def Leppard
Hard Rock - Motley Crue, GNR
Glam - Alice Cooper
Sleaze Glam - Poison
Heavy Metal - Ozzy, Dio, Scorpions
NWOBHM - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest
Thrash Metal - Metallica, Megadeth
Progressive Metal - Dream Theater
Neoclassical Metal - Yngwie Malmsteen
Symphonic Metal - Trans Siberian Orchestra
Power Metal - Avantasia
Happy Metal - Freedom Call
Industrial - Nine Inch Nails
Blues Hard Rock - Great White, Cinderella
Pop Rock - Michael Jackson, Madonna
AOR - Bryan Adams, John Waite
Punk - Sex Pistols
Grunge - Nirvana
Alternative - Green Day
Post Grunge - Nickelback
Nu-Metal - Korn
Metalcore - Avenged Sevenfold
Country - Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks
I always thought ACDC needed it's own Genre since they don't fit perfect into Hard Rock or Metal
For glam metal I would have put ratt or Dokken. Both iconic glam bands
I love Punk Rock and Speed Metal!!! 🤘
If you guys like I recommend Rock Kapak which is a genre from malaysia. Its basically means Axe rock
The thing here is I call all of this Rock N Roll.
I would make some different examples, like using some song from Black Sabbath or Pentagram as doom metal (Candlemass is more epic doom metal, which is a kinda more specific) and using Mudhoney as grunge example, and also bring some other more subgenres as stoner rock (or maybe stoner doom, like some Sabbath's song or maybe Sleep), funky metal (Living Coloür?) and emo (maybe Sunny Day Real Estate).
But yes, it's pretty much that.
So many Stand User here
Should’ve used Donovan or Jefferson airplane for psych rock and the ramones for punk
3:28, lmao I love "Barbory"
some more examples for all these would be really cool!
What is interesting that there are now bands from all across the world. The Hu - Mongol Rock, Skald - Viking Rock, Baby Metal - Japanese pop metal.
Bedroom Hardcore - Turnstile
Country Shoegaze - Orville Peck
Do-Wop Stoner - Queens Of The Stone Age
Skate Punk - Suicidal Tendencies
Alien Desert Rock - Sleep
Lake Fisherman Rock - Mac DeMarco
Nu-Americana - Arctic Monkeys (3 last album)
The Beatles: *casually uses a third of these genres, some of them even before they were invented*
I am so confused
Limp bizkit is definitely nu metal I would say a better example for rap rock would be rage against the machine
Ratm is more of a Rap Metal for me Rap Rock is aerosmith ft run dmc,def agree on LB tho they're one of big 4 NÜ Metal's
suggestion for part 2: theatrical rock and metal like Ghost
There is also the “Power metal” genre. An example if which would be the Swedish power metal band “Sabaton”
Early Metallica (RTL) and Pantera (just before Cowboys) could also work out as Power Metal, Sabaton and Dragonforce and such are just a tad more modern and shaped the genre, with earlier examples setting the ground with harmonies, epic solos loud rythm and interesting themes of lyrics
But this video overall is just setting out a very difficult task of naming every genre of arguably biggest base genre)) And it's way too much distinct stuff to name with just 5 minutes of most popular songs of such genres, without actually highlighting the key changes using words (as in Thrash is more of a evolution of NWOBHM and Speed Rock, and Psychedelic and Prog and Alternative are time and genre evading concepts in music)
You chose the worst band to represent the genre... at least pick something good like Helloween or Blind Guardian.
@@Revanchist ok
Dragonforce is fucking awesome tho
what the fuck, rtl by metallica has nothing to do with powermetal, whats wrong with you
I like how they misspelled bathory as “barbory”

Friendly reminder that the only genres that really matter are music you like and music you don’t. Categorisation only divides, division only polarises and polarisation only dilutes
I think "White Light/White Heat" was a poor choice for noise rock because that song might have been the most rock-focused effort on that album. "I heard her call my name" would be a more appropriate choice.
Was thinking the same thing, maybe he wanted to go easy on the ears lol

I'm just so happy to see MBV here 😊
the strokes were never indie, they made garage rock and were part of the garage rock revival scene. car sear headrest is an actual indie band
Indie rock is, along with garage rock, the most misunderstood genres
Surprised Alien Youth by Skillet was chosen that song is fairly obscure
Grunge, Industrial Rock, Groove Metal, Rap Rock, Nu Metal, Folk Metal, Christian Rock and Postgrunge are top
Some of these song choices are honestly baffling.
3.25 - A Fine Day To Die is by Bathory. Issues with reading your own writing, maybe...!

Emo is rock melodius/Emo is rock with melodic/melodious guitars.
Are slow rock and pop rock the same?
Idk if I would consider grunge a genre rather than more of a movement. I mean, even just the big four grunge bands all sound very different from each other. Pearl Jam is very rooted in the hard/alternative rock sound, while Nirvana takes a lot more punk rock influence. Soundgarden aren’t exactly “progressive”, but they use just as many odd time signatures as your average Rush album does. Alice In Chains is just straight up metal.
Yeah same with Britpop tbh
