Scarlet vs Green Wing Macaw Parrots Differences, Similarities, Personality and Care

What is the difference between Green Winged and Scarlet Macaws? They are both red macaws but there are also some differences.
The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) has bright red feathers with yellow and blue on the wings. The Green-Winged Macaw (Ara chloropterus) has a different shade of red, more of a maroon color. And like the name suggests, Green Winged macaws have green on their wings. Also their blue is more of a turquoise.
Green Wing macaws are also noticeably larger and heavier than Scarlet Macaws. Green wings have larger feet and a larger beak. While both Scarlets and Green Wings have white skin cheek patches, only Green Wings have red feathers there.
Both of these magnificent parrots require a large enclosure with abundant enrichment and training. Green Wing Macaws are known as the gentle giant because they can be bigger, calmer, and cuddly. Scarlets can be more temperamental. Parrot training can help build a better relationship with either kind.
