  • What are the things that you would want to know if you were getting a green wing macaw? Here are three important differences between Macaws and Other Parrots.
1 macaws need a lot of space. They are big birds and stretching their wings. Requires some serious, flying space!
2 you need to know how to be at the top of the pecking order. Macaws know how to be the boss!
3 it is really important to understand that not fat is essential to their diet. This means buying nuts on a regular basis, needs to be a part of a Macaws life or budget.

Rosie is beautiful. She may fly for you. I was told Ivar NEVER even tried to fly. Well if he’s in our bedroom which has carpet and, of course a bed, he will take little flights. With praise and rewards he will try to go a little further. He does also hang upside down in his cage and flap his wings. When I see him flapping I praise him and give him a little reward. Yes, I can see a large Macaw being a bit bossy! It doesn’t take them long to learn they have a significant weapon.😂 So you need a strong bond and the ability to read their body language. I think it’s worth the time to gain trust to have such a magnificent friend!❤❤❤

Ivar is so lucky to have you! What a wonderful thing, that he takes short flights!
Rosie is so easy to walk now… I feel safe because even if she takes the tether off , and she does, she can’t fly off.May not be walking her once her wings grow out 😞

I’ve shied away from them because I understand that they are like IRN, independent. Perfect if you aren’t going to be hands-on as much, not ideal if you want a cuddly parrot.

Hi, would you be willing to answer a few questions? My parents have a greenwing that they have had for about 20 years. The bird is semi bonded with my dad however as my dad has gotten older he cant spend as much time with her. I grew up with her (hasnt seen me in probably 10 years though) im looking at taking over care of the bird. A few things the bird has a tendency to nip/bite at anyone that isnt my dad how do i go about breaking this habit so i can form a bond with her and have her start trusting me. I want to do everything i can for her and make sure she is happy. When i was growing up we could get her to come out of the cage with us in the room and take peanuts and such from us but never could we pet her outside of the cage(some fear due to her biting). Can i ask how you would go about getting her adjusted and comfortable and trusting enough to not bite me? Im sure i will probably get bit at least once during the process and im ok knowing that and i know positive reinforcement works better as they are strong willed birds. no amount of research can replace experience which is why i am here asking you. Any answers from any keepers who have greenwings would be appreciated. My father and i are in the process of setting up arrangements as i live 2 states away so i have about 2-3 more months to plan for her arrival.
