$hit! Thais are quite notorious for smuggling foods over the border as well.
Though, I miss my grandmother, who had already passed away, I still remember how she would pressure me to bring homemade-foods to my uncles & aunts in the U.S. (and I always left them out before going to the airport).
There needs to be flyers printed off or, Emailed to the relevant authorities regarding what can or cannot, be brought into places like Australia, the UK, the US, Canada Etc. then, the flyers could be handed out to people travelling to these places, so the forbidden items could be dealt with by customs imigration at the point of leaving China, Thailand, India Etc, rather than Australia US or UK finding out when the passengers get there with the forbidden items still in the bags so they have to pay a big old fine and lose the lot.
@@jenlfpotter3870 : That is not going to work. The smugglers always think that they can get away with it, the source countries do not want to spend extra money on monitoring the foods leaving the country, and the destination countries do not really want to lose out on extra money from the fines.
It's amazing how some people think that Australia has no meat for sale, so they must bring their own, and pray that it doesn't go bad before they get there. 🤦♂

She can keep on trying to get a proper work visa somewhere if she still wants to leave her home country and start a life elsewhere.

A cancellation of a visa is more serious than just "oh well, guess I just leave Australia." It basically affects your life's travel ability from that point on.

There was a guy from my city who flew in from out of the country with a suitcase of dried fish and the fly larva were all through it. He said he needed it because USA food was not so good LOL. The authorities put it in a metal garbage can and took it out and burned it. Set him free. IT was gross LOL Fire department said the smell could knock a buzzard off a gut wagon LOL

Silly thing is, any food you can get in Asia (and China) is easily available in just about every Australian city and larger town. Asian food shops are everywhere and stock a heaps, no more expensive than locally produced goods (thanks to the Coles/Woolworths duopoly ripping us off)

I think that fines are fine as they are, but I agree that ignorance is not an option. Canadian airlines in my experience (WestJet, Air Canada) have stewards go up and down the cabin distributing customs cards AND offer to assist in filling them out in both French and English (and occasionally more, I did meet a wonderful German-speaking stewardess on a flight).

It's refreshing that that Croatian was returned and that just because she was a woman and started sobbing that that didn't giver her a pass. I respect that agents professionalism in being polite but firm on the laws.
The rules are simple: you want to work? Get a working visa. You want to bring food? Declare it. It's really not that hard.
They should have the rule: first time you don't declare food, you get a fine. Second time, you are refused entry into the country. Let's see how fast they suddenly learn.
They can't refuse you entry if you're a citizen of that country.
I think that these people assume its harder to get caught than it is. The border security agents are VERY observant and know all the tricks they use. I remember one episode there was a lady who was hiding drugs under her wig. An agent thought it looked at little too high off her scalp. Boom, wig full of coke.
Some people think they can charm their way through.

don't know how long ago this was filmed but nowadays Croatia has about Portugal levels of average salaries, surpassed them even, and while that's not Switzerland or Liechtenstein sums it's still pretty good, as someone from further east in europe with friends in Croatia, again if it's from the last few years, i call bs on that 'Croatia is now in hard hard time', nowadays it's a tourist destination for god's sake with Italy level prices. There was a positive result for possible drugs and the woman had travelled in a way that could be deemed suspicious and then there's the entire case of rotting fish. She was cooperative with the questioning and search, understanding well enough to answer and when they couldn't find anything illegal they let her go, no hostility on either side.

I never would have thought about customs going through my phone until watching this show…
Perhaps because in the past a pretty face and a pleasing personality, and maybe a few tears, has gotten her what she wanted. But now, she is in a country that actually follows the laws the way they are written. By the by, I have been shaken down for money by customs or immigration officials, and while I just let them do it, I have seen people resist, and it is not pretty. I like countries that actually follow the laws.

The fines should be much higher, many of these people blatantly lied and broke the law deliberately. If you can't pay, you shouldn't be able to enter. Also, that European lady was given waaaayy too many chances.

They do for formal interviews, but the cost to have enough translators for dozens of languages available for each flight would be astronomical, and add to the cost of travelling.

Attaching criminal charges or fining people a percentage of their income / net worth is a better way of dissuading people from breaking the law. Traffic tickets in Finland are calculated based on the offender's salary: in June 2023, a multimillionaire was fined €121,000 for driving 30km/h over the speed limit. If you're going to hit people in the wallet, best to make it count.
