  • Have you ever had your dog’s bowl, picked up your car keys, or the doorbell rings, and your dog gets super excited? That excitement in your puppy or dog is a conditioned response, and we can use the magic of conditioning to help our puppy or dog learn faster and make dog training easier. It’s essential to understand what’s going on with classical conditioning and how you can use it to your advantage for shaping your dog’s behavior.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • What conditioning is and how to use it to your advantage.
    • About Pavlov's dogs and classical conditioning.
    • The three things that can happen when an animal is being conditioned.
    • Why good conditioning makes dog training easier.
    • How your dog's name should mean something good.
    • Why to notice all the conditioned responses in your dog's life.
    • The steps to conditioning your puppy or dog to a leash and collar.
    • How to use conditioning on walks or at the dog park.
    • About terminal behaviors and how to rehearse the end many times.
    • Why conditioned responses are powerful and can transfer value.

    Prepping for my future puppy, but also noticing how much a lot of this also applies to my cat. She hated her carrier initially, now she only gets fun treats if she's in there. She's conditioned now that great things happen in there (although 1/100 times she goes in there she might be brought to the vet). Priceless as a cat guardian and I can't wait to apply this to the puppy

    Happy New Year to all at Dogs That.
    I really really needed that injection of enthusiasm and positivity today, as things are not as good as I would like them to be. My boy is still very uncertain about other dogs, even across the road, but I guess I just need to carry on until he learns to realise that seeing another dog is a GOOD THING!!!

    Hello Team, Charlie and I are members of the recallers. We would love to know more about how to re-conditioning in regards to leash reactive please. We have watch episode #29 (preventing reactivity)and #88 (fence fighting) multiple times and both episodes touched on leash reactive. We are still not clear on how to reconditing during walking (or may be even before the walk). Charlie just wants to meet every dog in town and it comes out as barking his head off. any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Team.

    I am running into an interesting problem. Unfortunately, I have stairs to the potty area and at 10 wks have to carry the pup to and from the potty area. He does not care to be held and is very squirmy. I have started giving him a treat just as I go to pick him up and then treat when he is in my arms. I then go down the stairs and place in him potty area and during the day, after successful potty, he is released with go play cue. After a little play I let him choose to go through the threshold for going back up the stairs. Again, I treat as I go to pick him up and before setting him down. Despite my attempt to create positive CER, he now darts/runs away from me when I squat (go into position) to pick him up. Thoughts?

    • @RaptorsGirl
      @RaptorsGirl 2 роки тому

      If you can do it safely walking backwards down the stairs will help...but only if you can do it safely. Also how much do you practice during the day just picking up him up, walking a couple of steps around your home, and putting him back down? That too will be a big help.

    I like this a lot but I’m wondering why you wouldn’t just start with the collar instead of the bowl

    • @DogsThat
      @DogsThat  2 роки тому

      Hi @watchmoivies123, it's using a positive conditioned response to transfer value. Most dogs will put their head in a bowl, but potentially would not target a collar so readily. Susan covers it with the info in the podcast; it's got a lot of great detail, so worth a few listens.

    I would love to understand purpose of crates....why? Why can't they simply have a bed or favorite place on sofa, etc?? Why locked in a cage?

    • @DogsThat
      @DogsThat  2 роки тому

      Hi Darby, we've got a whole episode about why crates are not cages to help:

    • @agingacademy
      @agingacademy 2 роки тому +2

      @@DogsThat I watched that too. I just don't relate to training an animal to enjoy doing something (using treats) when that something is not needed or natural . We don't keep humans in cribs and cages to make sure they are comfortable if they by chance get arrested and need to go to a jail cell, or to a hospital and need to stay in a hospital bed. Why can't dogs sleep and lay where they are comfortable.....with their owners or other pets?

    • @rosieleat6868
      @rosieleat6868 Рік тому

      @@agingacademy - I was horrified when I first heard about crates, but crate training doesn’t mean to say that you keep your dog locked up in them or that they must sleep in them. It is really great to have a safe space that your dog loves and sees as his own that you can use. I am getting a puppy in a few weeks and I will crate train him as we are a multi pet household, and I need a safe space for him when he can’t be supervised - I am home all day with them but sharing a small space until my wee house is built. But if they are ever injured or need to go to the vet etc etc it’s really handy training.
