The PRV is intended to limit the maximum oil pressure when the oil is cold or the engine is revved, it should have no effect at low revs/hot. The blow off pressure is likely to be in excess of 50 psi. The oil pressure light switch usually switches on at about 10 to 15 psi. All you know now is that the pressure is above 10 -15 psi unless he pressure switch is some high pressure special unit. I would get an oil pressure guage fitted (even temporarily) on that engine asap and see how the pressure fluctuates with heat/revs.

Hi Peter - Alan had a temporary pressure gauge and tested it thoroughly before, during and after the new PRV was fitted, so all is well. Thanks for posting Best TR T

There is another mod you may want to consider. The oil feed to the rocker shaft is poor and can be increased by a simple extra outside feed pipe. About £50. It's a well known modification and not a bodge.

The oil is another reason as the old 20/50 is not really the same now and it is not always high pressure that is best as you have found out, these engines condense a lot of water and i would recomend slick 50 as this realy helps reduce friction on the critical start up. change oil frequently as the new oils are modified to cope with different temperature but not the volume of water from non fuel injected engines.
You have some great triumphs in your stable keep up the good work and seek adivce from the specialists.

So simple.Just to add a side note from my own experience on a vauxhall carlton 1.8 OHC good old 8 valver I had a blocked filter hence the relief valve saved the engine. It gave itself away because as they open to relief backpressure they make a distnct "whistling/whining noise" as high pressure oil is being effectively squeezed through them if that makes sense.A bit like blowing a party balloon up and then letting the air out under pressure via neck as you take your fingers slowly off it.Ps that 2500 is a bloody handsome car in red.

Thanks Glenn - it was a tricky issue to find, but glad we did in the end! Best wishes TR T

That's such a refreshing story! Congratulations on the persistence and also by the way on the near-concours smartness of the car, as we can see. I think it complements the Stag(s) so well.

Nice to find a simple solution but it doesn’t really add up to me…. I know the bottom end of the engine was a “good” used one but obviously things like the PRV were an unknown quantity that could have been faulty, but you proved that new standard spec replacements gave the same problem i.e. early pressure release. So why would all attempts to use OEM spec parts on a simple long established engine all fail to do the job without an uprated spring ?
The fact that the specialists recommended a different filter is suspicious, I can imagine that the fashionable change from the original horizontal cartridge type to the vertical spin-on type with an adaptor is part of the problem. These Specialists were able to sell lots of these kits so enthusiastic owners could say “I’ve made my car better ! We’re cleverer than the manufacturer ! “. Even the recommended filter looks small compared to standard… presumably it’s more “correct” because of some anti-drain valve protecting the engine on startup due to the clumsy filter installation.
It’s interesting that nearly all newer engines have gone back to cartridge oil filters… usually mounted at the TOP of the engine….

Hi John - I suspect that the modern PRV's are not quite made to the original OEM standard as they should be. The Guys at STS have been Triumph experts for decades now and found this out the hard way just like us - so apparently it's a regular recommendation that really does make a difference. We were very glad to have had this insight, as it had the rest of us completely baffled! Happy Days! Best TR T

Quite incredible. It would be virtually impossible to spot this issue without the expert help and knowledge of Southern Triumph Services. Who would have thought that that the spring was just slightly out of spec causing all that worry.
Mann generally believed to be a top quality brand of filter as well so hopefully all good now!

Nuts that it took three goes on that relief valve - and you're right, the washer bodge is just asking for it.
What a (heh) relief that that's all it was.

Yes, it was looking pretty serious.. If we'd taken the engine out again, I still don't think we'd be any the wiser still! Thanks to Rachel and Mark at STS Top Guys! Thanks for posting! TR T

have you lock tight the screw in the end of the rocker shaft ?? if that comes loose it will give similar faults

So are we saying the spring has lost some tension over time, which is understandable? But why does it need an uprated one and not just a new standard one? Are the new, maybe aftermarket, standard ones a bit weak? Just curious. What a beautiful car it is though.

    • @ArryTheStag
      @ArryTheStag  6 місяців тому

Hi Steve - see my reply to John below. I. suspect the modern PRV's are simply not made to the original OEM spec. Came down to that extra strong spring and combined with a different oil filter sorted the problem. It's one that STS have seen time and again down the years, so very grateful they could help us! I'll be honest and say that everyone otherwise were completely lost without this golden nugget of advice! Very 'Appy Days!! Best wishes TR T
