How is it a master piece? As a marketing executive u fail to see how filming the sea, a skyline, a slowed down footage of tiger running, and then a esso petrol station advertises what the quality of engine oil can do for your vehicle.
Fantastic tune and yes, always gives me goosebumps too. It goes perfectly with the image of the Tiger. That slow build up and the final crescendo over that heroic head shot. All those years ago and never forgotten.
I totally agree this advert was amazing the music, the tiger, it brings back the summer's of the seventies. Times we'll never forget Jeff Wayne created one of the best pieces of music and we all love it 💯🎼👍
I Cant believe it, this music takes me right back to my childhood. When the advert would show, I would tell my brothers & sisters to keep quite so i could hear the music, by the time they did the advert would finish. Thanks for the upload (magicgeezer) i can now listen to it in peace.
Literally brings a tear to my eye, wonderful childhood memories, patriotic feelings & sadness for the loss of what we were. Perhaps one day we shall return.
I remember this advert so well, the music (more than the image of the tiger) ALWAYS stuck in my mind! I never knew, until very recently, that it was composed by Jeff Wayne! Every time I hear it, it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!! It's such a short piece of music but it made a massive impression on me as a teenager, very powerful and emotional in such a short space, a credit to the composer!
Too right. I had the Esso Tiger poster on my bedroom wall and the Jeff Wayne theme will stay with me until my dying day. One of the classic commercials of all time.
The glamour of industry, the urban, the darkness, oil petrol and technology, Brilliant 1970s advertising. Thought this advert was glamorous when I was a child.
I can only echo the sentiments of the other comments. I too remember this from back in the 70s when I was still a kid in school. Seeing this and so many other great ads back then I can remember thinking that I can't wait to grow up and go out there, see the world etc. Of course, as you do get older you start to realize that few things are quite as glamorous as they look on TV 🤣 . BTW- I'm sure I'm not the only one that wondered what happened to the tiger in the ad? In fact, they actually used a number of different tigers over the decades, including, of course, the original live one (as opposed to the cartoon version) who have all long since passed away from old age. Such is life. It was an ingenious idea though, to use a real-life tiger to get the "tiger in your tank" idea across, they are incredibly majestic creatures and then couple that with the music by Jeff Wayne, it couldn't fail as an ad campaign. Thanks.
ESSO's north sea exploration advertising campaign in the 70s with the stunning footage of the tigers and Jeff Waynes music. Nice memories. They should do a special HD update with the same music re-recorded.
Without doubt, the best theme and coolest advert I can ever remember, thanks ever so much Ive been wondering who was the artist and to hear it again for over 40 years.
ooohhh I don't know... there were loads of good ones ... like old spice . This is good but so JW and Gordons Gin (a good cover by the Human League... and so many more.
@billboy Don't have a copy but I was on holiday in Scotland with parents and I heard it on a independent local radio station which strangely, in its early years, closed down at 8pm.
There was a full length version of this in the early 80s. I'm sure it was retitled 'selling petrol' and it was definitely played on a radio series called 'sounds visual' in 1983. It was a full recording, about 3 mins long.
God this takes me back. I used to love this ad! Interesting how they show an oil platform and a refinery which is the kind of imagery oil company ads tend to avoid these days.
Because our schools are run by socialist teachers which in turn teaches our children that anything to do with progress or Western capitalism is to be looked upon as 'evil' and must be destroyed in favor of worshiping the state.
I used to think I wa leftie, but the current crop makes me look somewhat right of Thatcher 😁. Unfortunately your are correct, although some would think you were into conspiracy, we do now seem ashamed of being proud of Britain & its massive achievements. I hope the feeling conveyed in this amazing ad will one day return.
Yes, I remember these adverts from my childhood too! Such a powerful piece of music, stirs such emotions. When the advert switches from night to day, flying over a hedge low level and racing across a field accompanied by this tune, I think had something to do with why I became a helicopter pilot. It made me want to do that too! lol Thanks so much for posting. Such a shame we can't buy an original copy...
Utterly legendary...when Britain looked forward not gazed at it's navel all day! When themes were this good, no one minded ads, Anyone out there REMEMBRR the OLD 1970s Silvikrin theme too? I was at college doing business studies and we used this as an example of how to build a brand. MILLENNIALS COULDN'T WRITE SOMETHING THIS GOOD! (& YES, I mean YOU, Adele and Ed Shee) ran....). Oh, well.....???
Used to love the Esso ads, I still have the tigers tail Esso gave away at their petrol stations in the early 60s. Advertisers today should watch these old ads and learn how to attract potential customers attention, instead of the garbage they churn out now leaving you wondering what the hell the advert was actually about.
Well done MagicGeezer, great music (if we remember it we're too old) and early use of drone - type footage from 7 seconds in. I've got a 3 min, 51s. version on an audio cassette. It's got Syntoms in the mix, but sounds otherwise original.
Graham if you could upload this I'm sure Jeff wouldn't mind. I contacted him about 10 years ago for a clean (no voice over) copy and he didn't have one himself. McCann Erickson don't have a copy either. Neither does the BBC Gram archive. You'd be doing the world a favour as for many folk of our generation, it's the best piece of music of our childhoods.
@@MPW159 Sorry for the delayed reply. My version was given to me on a TDK SA cassette tape, one of the better tapes of its era - trouble is, it doesn't use the potential quality - the SQ is less than desirable, including a dropout or two. Most artists (rightly) wouldn't want sub-standard versions of their work published. However, based on the 'something is better than nothing' theory and the fact that you say Jeff would be OK with it, I will (eventually) digitise / upload (even though I've never uploaded anything to YT). When I do. I will link to it here so that it doesn't get missed.
Wow! Amazing - I've been waiting 30 years for this Jeff Wayne music. Do you have the STEREO version (there is one on the Credo 2 1980 version on here - but that has voice over). Is the longerst version 50 secs? Are you in fact Jeff Wayne?? Thanks so much for posting.
I have watched this several times now... and despite the shit audio (no critique intended) and sub standard images (again no critique intended) .... every single time it sends tingles in my neck and legs. Must be some sub conscious memory of a great advert of my youthful years.

Thanks for posting this - I have been trying to find out who composed the tune for years, and you have answered the question! It is obvious now that it is by Jeff Wayne, you can hear the similarities between it and his "War of the Worlds" music. It sounds as though you uploaded the music from a CD (as there is no spoken commentary) - could you tell me which album it is from? Thanks in anticipation.
Featured on BBC Four last Friday (11th). Looked a little familiar, I think they took it straight from here. 100% convinced it was taken from here. Have the proof - Zinc Media, who made it, took this same video for BBC Four.
One of the tigers used in the Esso adverts was called Tango. After Esso finished with him they dumped him in a dodgy eastern European zoo but after some years he was rescued by Woodside Wildlife Park in Lincolnshire. He managed to live the rest of his days in the company of a younger tigress and died late last year.
I couldn't give two flying fucks about it, to tell you the truth, you stupid bleeding heart idiot. You're most likely one of those boring vegetarians, or worse, a vegan.

Robot Dolls Band It can always be re-recorded. Same goes for JW's Bittermen Theme. No reason why both classics shouldn't sound as great as they did the first time.
@billboy Hey that's great - you're very lucky to have those Esso mixes, if only there was a way of hearing them again. I worked with the BBC gram library for a while and as they did not have a clean copy of the Esso theme in the archive, I emailed Jeff Wayne and asked if he had one. He was very nice and wrote back saying he didn't have one either, and everyone at McCann Erickson who might had long gone, but he made me a midi synth version as a midi file which I still have. This is my dads claim to fame. He was paid £10 as the tanker driver chosen to drive onto the forecourt.
