    If you're going to move abroad then I highly recommend Transferwise as a means of moving your money over to your local bank account cheaply, whichever country you are in.
    It also serves as a convenient way to accept payments in other currencies, avoiding conversion fees should you be working as a digital nomad (as many here in Mexico do).

    This is the only way I found to truly make decent money teaching English in Latin America. It was in Chile but its VERY similar to working in Mexico. I was just making enough to get by teaching for institutes and part time university gigs. I had a friend who was also a teacher who was friends with a woman who worked for a multinational corporation and was a bigwig in the Human Resources department. It's all about who you know.
    So we started asking this HR lady about the possibility of cutting out the English institute middleman and hiring us directly as employees who worked for HR. She went to the head guy in the office and he said to make a business plan. We researched how to write business plans, made one and it worked. There were 4 of us (we got to hire a couple more teachers making slightly less) and we taught the whole company early in the morning and then late into the evening with big breaks in the middle of the day. We had to type reports about each employee we taught that we'd send to our bosses in HR. Some of the partners wanted individualized classes during more "normal" hours.
    We made about 2,000 dollars US a month which was amazing for an English teacher but we had to dress like business people and work 12 hour days on weekdays (with a two hour break at lunchtime). We also had opportunities to make decent money teaching the kids of the company partners on the weekend if we wanted to (Man, were these kids spoiled, the way they bossed the maids around was so creepy but I digress). My friend and I also had MAs in TESOL which lent us a bit of mystique of professionalism that probably helped, too. We did that for two years and it was a great experience. The home company had a huge scandal in the US and got acquired by another firm and so the company in Chile had to merge with a rival firm and the highest paid English teaching gig in all of Chile was no more.
    Bottom line is you have to wiggle your way into the business world to really make decent money (or at least enough to save and travel with) teaching English in Latin America. The American and Canadian people working at this multinational (they were all hired in their home countries and got sent down) were making their normal north American salaries and living like kings in penthouses and mansions. I taught in Japan, too, and places like that pay so much more to teachers. China, Vietnam and oil rich middle eastern countries are other options to make better money teaching. But the students in Latin America are the most fun to teach. They love to talk and have a good time and lots of times you just forget you're working.

      I'm glad to hear that you managed to make a good living out there. There's definitely money to be made but you need hustle to get any of it.
      All of these companies are paying a lot for their employees' classes. I never tried to get a private contract with one because I've heard that it's difficult if you are not already an established company, which can properly invoice. This, coupled with visa concerns, was what put me off. I'm guessing that this is the kind of thing you talk about when you mentioned a business plan and reports.
      You're definitely right about Latin American students being the most fun to teach on the whole. Maybe when I'm back in Mexico I'll try to get my own business contracts.
      Thanks for the comment. I'm sure it'll help a lot of people.

      I can only speak for Queretaro but you can get a room in one of the nicer parts of town for around MX$3000 a month, leaving you with $10,000+ for food and entertainment.

    Hi there Dave, thanks for sharing this information. You mentioned something about the 20 % for participation, I`ve been teaching English in private schools and what I noticed is that here in Mexico they won`t ponder the evaluations because most of the students will fail the entire semester. I just moved here to Querètaro and it`ll be great to hang out around someday. My regards to you and Karen !

    • @LaKarencitaMX
      @LaKarencitaMX  5 років тому

      I was told to use whatever rubric I wanted for the evaluation. Making participation one of the criteria was an attempt to encourage good behaviour. School-wide the grades were almost completely arbitrary and, as you mention, the objective was simply to pass the students. It was deeply frustrating and I couldn't go back to teaching at a private school in Mexico.
      Unfortunately, were leaving Querétaro in a couple of weeks to move to China so I doubt we'll be able to meet up but I hope you enjoy the city. It's a wonderful place to live.

      If you're a certified teacher in the States then you can get great jobs all over the world. As I mentioned in the video, Mexico doesn't pay much at all. MX$20k gross a month would be an excellent salary for a teacher. With the current exchange rate, that would be about US$642 after tax. That's more than I made with a MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at a well-known private school.
      One thing that I have heard is that international schools often have different pay scales for teachers hired in-country and those hired from abroad, with those hired abroad often being paid more. It may be worth applying to some of the more prestigious international schools.

      Mexico is probably one of the countries where it's easier to find a job but if you have never taught before, I'd strongly recommend taking some sort of course to prepare yourself.
      With a degree and some sort of teaching certificate, you'll have no difficulty finding jobs. More importantly, it's not easy to teach a class if you don't know what you're doing. Taking a course would prepare you for the job.
      The CELTA is the best certificate but it's very expensive at $1200~ and takes a month. There are a lot of cheaper options available, even for $40 online, but you get what you pay for.

    • @LaKarencitaMX
      @LaKarencitaMX  5 років тому

      I recommend just contacting schools in your chosen city and see who is hiring. As I said in the video, you need a job offer in order to apply for the visa but you can't apply from within Mexico. This means that it would be better to get the offer before you come here but the majority of schools will be unwilling to help you unless you are already in Mexico, if at all.

    Hi! Thank you for the video, it was very informative. I would like to know if it's possible for a non-native speaker to find a job as an English teacher. Considering that I have a bachelor's in Linguistics, TESOL and a certificate from Cambridge (CAE) that certifies my proficiency in English.

    • @LaKarencitaMX

      You would likely be able to find work but as a non-native speaker, you would be competing with Mexican teachers, many of whom speak excellent English.
      It seems you are very well qualified. Unfortunately, Mexico isn't a market in which these qualifications are particularly prized. I have an MA TESOL but I found that it didn't reveal any additional opportunities for me.

    What about some kind of health care insurance in Mx? Or is there free healthcare?

    • @statingtheobviousify
      @statingtheobviousify 5 років тому

      If you're working legally, your employer is required to register you with IMSS, which is the social security system and amongst other things allows you free health care in the IMSS hospitals. Many English schools don't register their staff so that's something to be aware of and to insist on.
      I've heard mixed reviews about the quality of the IMSS hospitals. Fortunately, I've never had to use them. Private insurance is available and I believe it's relatively inexpensive compared to other countries. Very few teaching jobs will offer this as a benefit, however it's quite common in other professional fields in Mexico.

      No dije que había corrupción. Creo que es más por los incentivos que existen dentro de una escuela así y que toda evaluación es interna. No me gustó pero si es corrupción, es un especie muy leve.

      When I first came here, I was only working part-time. Everything is the same, you just earn less money.
      You can start a business if you want. There's definitely plenty of demand and the working visa allows you to work wherever, oddly enough. If you don't already have a job which provides a visa, you will need to get some sort of permission to start the business. I believe it's possible but I'm not sure how it would work.

      I know schools only require a tefl certificate but what about companies that want their employees to learn English?

    • @LaKarencitaMX
      @LaKarencitaMX  5 років тому

      I've only ever heard of one company having an in-house English teacher, and they hired a Mexican. Thinking of the companies where I have taught, most have about 6 hours of classes per week, meaning that it's definitely not worth hiring a full-time employee, especially if they need to provide visas and other complications resulting from hiring a foreigner. Most companies will contract a language school to send out teachers to them. This means that to teach at a company, you find a language school and they send you to whichever company they have a contract with - likely several different companies.
      You can always look for these contracts as an individual but this is a challenge as the companies will need invoices for their expenses, meaning that you would need to be a registered business to be able to bid for the contract. If you can get to that point, it's a very lucrative position to be in. Basically, if you're not already established in Mexico, you'll want to contact schools.

      Near to Querétaro for example, the neighbouring city of Celaya is quite dangerous and nearby Salamanca's police force has been disbanded because of corruption. You hear about quite a lot of murders there.
      Sadly, there's no shortage of unsafe places in Mexico which are probably best to steer clear of. That being said, it's a massive country and there are wonderful safe places which are very pleasant indeed. I've never been affected by crime and security isn't something that worries me at all, either in Querétaro or any of the other cities that I've visited. If somewhere's dangerous, just don't go.
