It was a privilege to watch Richie's last game on home soil at Eden Park In 2015 against Australia we trounced them 41-13 anyway I will never forget the standing ovation he got when he came of the field I have never seen anything like that for an All Black before that night he also surpassed Ireland's Brian O'Driscoll as the most capped Rugby player in history.
Mitchell came at a time when the entire ABs set up post 99 debacle, Smith, Gilbert era was in need of a complete reset. And boy did he reset it. He then reset himself out of the team.
@@DrAAAli you gotta give it to him - he was winning well in the lead-up to 2003 and asked not to be judged unless he didn't win the World Cup. He did what he thought was best (although taking Ben Atinga over Christian Cullen and not caring about Carlos' shit kicking by saying the ABs win by scoring tries was odd) and when he was out-coached by Eddie Jones and didn't win, he took his licks and left.
@@andyhunter5869 exactly... mitchell turned the abs around and had them playing pretty good rugby as opposed to foster who is giving us what we saw when he ran the chiefs - muddling mediocrity. Mitchell was outcoached by eddie on one memorable occasion. Foster was outcoached by ireland and france in consecutive weeks last year and somehow still survived.
I remember the game in Brisbane vs the Wallabies, they were all over us, and should have won. But Riche's defence on the right defensive flank was incredible. 29 July 2006. We won 13-9. thanks to Richie.
I started playing rugby instead of football in Spain some time ago. I discovered the All Blacks and Richie in particular. He is one of my prefered sport players. Richie and Rafael Nadal. They are top!
I remember that game - McCaw's performance that day was a complete standout and deserved the man-of-the-match award! It certainly set the standard for his career!
I am not so sure that he was ever clearly the best player in the world (no matters to me what the World Rugby said). And there have been Allblacks, in the same position, with greater technical and physical qualities. What he did prove is to be THE MOST IMPORTANT and transcendental PLAYER OF HIS GENERATION. Around which and under his example, he transformed and improved the mentality of the Allblacks. Harvesting the greatest successes of professional rugby.
I think you are right that the wording could be misleading. Its ok to say he's the best to someone who doesn't really know what rugby is. When you are talking to a rugby fanatic you need more arguments and it's really easy to find these: he's consistency, work ethic, leadership, skills, the position he played and the hardship of it, dealing with the immensely growing pressure and adapting.. all that made him the greatest, greatest at delivering results. If you think of him as a car, he's not a Lambo or Ferrari, he's probably more like a Lexus. Does what it says on the package, every time, always. And it's never a walk in a park, far from it. That's why he's the GOAT Thats why
From the first to his last, he was the best in his position for New Zealand & the World.
The GOAT .
Sam Cane good tho 😆
Seriously a legend this guy is above any flanker of his era he’s absolutely brilliant

Brian O' Dingdong
Probably the only right decision John Mitchell made during his time as ABs coach💯
Resigning was another
