Thank you so much, Jeff! (By the way, you look so much like my voice teacher, whom I took voice lessons from for about 8 years -- uncanny resemblance!)

I’ve been singing choir since elementary school but stopped in college. I’m now 30 and got recommended this video as I’m starting to look into doing some voice work on the side. MAN am I out of vocal (and literal!) shape! Doing exercises like this again after so long made me feel like I was dusting cobwebs off my vocal chords. Thank you so much for this resource, I’m gonna need this a lot in the future
thank you so much for this! when i was at school i took singing lessons for a couple years and loved it, but the school removed me because i didnt want to take a music gcse so they wanted to prioritise other students :( in the past few months ive been trying to relearn it and resume my progress, and this video is super helpful! much less nerve wracking to follow along than try to warmup solo, and it has really helped with my singing. thank you again, you're doing great work :)
This is a little confusing as F4 for a mezzo is right in the middle of your thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice range (chest voice). In other words, not high at all. If you mean F5, well that is just above your secondo passaggio, and that would be tricky indeed. Check this out: ua-cam.com/video/jF5wylGeMYA/v-deo.html Best! Jeff
Yes! That's the entire point! The videos on my channel are here to make practicing vocal technique regular and successful. If you have questions, consider joining me at my weekly live event. Here's a link to this coming Saturday's: ua-cam.com/video/R_eH1HTRVw0/v-deo.html Best! Jeff
Thanks, this is fantastic! I just want to point out that it is slightly confusing if you give the example in a different tone and then proceed with the first exercise on another tone :) I don't know if others also have difficulties with that, or if it's just me haha
Thank you for that! Thank you for watching too! Would it be better if I demonstrated an octave lower rather than in a different key? The reason I often demonstrate things in different keys is so that the actual usage of my voice is the same. Ie., if it's an exercise that's going over the mezzo secondo passaggio, I'll demonstrate it at my secondo passaggio. Best, Jeff
I really enjoyed this one! Accidental tip: I was running short of time, so took my notebook to the bathroom while I showered to warm up in the shower. It really helps from paralysis by analysis for beginners like me, since I also had to soap up and do all that stuff, so I was relaxed singing. And, the bathroom always resonates best, so it was so fun! Oh it also made me make sure I'm in the shower for 15 minutes max. I guess if this is the easy one for me, and no need to force anything, then I might have decided - mezzo is probably the right range for me :)
Really great observation! Distracting yourself can often result in unexpected progress. There are, as it happens, entire aspects of vocal technique that are more about distracting the singer in order to get them to do something with their voice that they might not normally do. Additionally, when we're distracted, we sometimes don't consciously control our voices as much. This is particularly prevalent in early registration event practice. Great work! Keep it up and thanks for sharing your experience here! Best! Jeff
@@JeffRolka Thank you for the feedback, it's much valued. For me some distraction can be good, because I get so focused on doing well that I cram up sometimes. It's easy to get frustrated with self, and with singing, it's rarely beneficial to force it. I've also noticed with singing now something I've noticed with other skill acquisition. As a complete rookie, it's easy to make progress fast, but there comes a time, when I start thinking about how I do things in order to improve on them, and suddenly I can't do what I could already do, it seems 'lost'. It's extremely frustrating, but seems to be a mental process and I get over it, if I persevere, often with a huge leap forward. So getting myself distracted from overanalysing myself has been helpful. Thank you for the warmups, I do one every day. Sometimes I try the soprano too, as people don't seem to agree on what my voice type is in the first place.
After the Tenor Ranges, I crossed the Mezzo as I feel the Alto is nothing much different to Tenor. I crossed the Mezzo to Train the Countenor Range part of my voice. This exercise felt like it crossed my passagio 2 times. One in the low passagio and one in the high passagio. The click mechanism in this range is highly reduced compare to my resonant Tenor passagio. The timber is soft but not airy. Almost like a girl Alto but somehow bright unlike the usual dark timbre sound color they have. Im a bit explorative Sir Jeff. The extended range Tenor excercise made this Mezzo Exercise a bit Easy for me. Ive explored a lighter resonance sound in my range.
JEFF! I've been using your warm-up videos for a year and I have seen a dramatic improvement in the quality and tone of my voice! I finally plucked up enough courage to audition for the big winter musical at my university and I WAS CAST THANKS TO YOU! I scored one of the 6 female speaking parts out of 35 people who initially auditioned. I'm on cloud 9! 🥳✨
..Ok now I'm confused, since I found some of the tones in this video easier to practice for some reason..can you explain please how to find out what type of voice one has?.. thank you!☺
Let me see if I can help here. First off, there is a lot of overlap in the vocal fachs (vocal ranges) so finding the alto and mezzo videos useful is not uncommon. In music terms, the typical ranges are only offset by a major second on the bottom and minor third on the top (in the thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice ranges - chest voice.) If you don't know what those intervals represent, it's not a lot of difference. So it's easy to find both alto and mezzo videos useful. Finding one's fach depends on two main elements. Overall range is one, but more important is the location of the secondo passaggio. That register event is the defining factor in finding our fach. In the meantime, keep using the mezzo videos, or, if you have some alto videos that you really like, just stop singing when it gets so low that you begin to change the sound of your voice to accommodate the pitches. Jump back in when it goes higher again. I hope that helps! Best, Jeff
+Lu Lopez Meyer Thank you! Thanks for getting in touch! Not yet....but since you ask, I have it on my list of videos to do. Look for it in the coming weeks or subscribe to get notified of the new videos as they are posted. I release every week. Thanks for watching! All the best, Jeff Rolka
I start it in my chest voice and then start to head into head voice if it gets too high (I was put in soprano at school but told I could do anywhere from baritone to soprano)
Stop singing if it gets too high and you're not familiar with registration event technique. Otherwise, there is a lot of overlap between the alto and mezzo tessituras. Best! Jeff

thank you so much for this! when i was at school i took singing lessons for a couple years and loved it, but the school removed me because i didnt want to take a music gcse so they wanted to prioritise other students :( in the past few months ive been trying to relearn it and resume my progress, and this video is super helpful! much less nerve wracking to follow along than try to warmup solo, and it has really helped with my singing. thank you again, you're doing great work :)
You're so welcome!
How can i sing hight notes (ex: F4 ) . I'm mezzo, i think :)
This is a little confusing as F4 for a mezzo is right in the middle of your thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice range (chest voice). In other words, not high at all. If you mean F5, well that is just above your secondo passaggio, and that would be tricky indeed. Check this out:

Jeff Rolka thank you
Does these warm up videos help to strengthen your voice and help you sing better? If not what video help with that? I'm a beginner at singing.
Yes! That's the entire point! The videos on my channel are here to make practicing vocal technique regular and successful. If you have questions, consider joining me at my weekly live event. Here's a link to this coming Saturday's:

Jeff Rolka Thank you! 😁
amazing warm ups!!! keep it up sir!!! looking forward to your next videos 😄😄😄😄
Thank you! It's going to be a few weeks I'm afraid, but they will absolutely be forthcoming!
Best,
Best,
Jeff
I really enjoyed this one!
Accidental tip:
I was running short of time, so took my notebook to the bathroom while I showered to warm up in the shower.
Your observations sound right on! Keep up the great work!!!
Jeff
Great workout to keep my money notes in shape. Thanks Jeff
Excellent! Thanks for singing along and thanks for writing in!
Best,
Jeff
Awesome! Congratulations and Break-a-leg when it's show time!
Thank you for watching and thanks for sharing your success!

Jeff
very useful and gentle , I really adore it and him!
Thanks so much for that! I appreciate it!
Jeff
You are a legend, Jeff!
Thank you so much! I do what I can! Thank you for watching!
Jeff
..Ok now I'm confused, since I found some of the tones in this video easier to practice for some reason..can you explain please how to find out what type of voice one has?.. thank you!☺
Let me see if I can help here.
First off, there is a lot of overlap in the vocal fachs (vocal ranges) so finding the alto and mezzo videos useful is not uncommon. In music terms, the typical ranges are only offset by a major second on the bottom and minor third on the top (in the thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice ranges - chest voice.)
If you don't know what those intervals represent, it's not a lot of difference.
Best,
Jeff
Thank you so much for these exercises 🙂 I warm up to them everyday. It's really helped improve my singing and to reach the high notes 🙏👌🙂🙂
hi, your lessons are really helpfull.. do you have a video to work on the passagio for mezzos? thank you so much!!!
+Lu Lopez Meyer Thank you! Thanks for getting in touch! Not yet....but since you ask, I have it on my list of videos to do. Look for it in the coming weeks or subscribe to get notified of the new videos as they are posted. I release every week.

Thank you for helping us stay in good shape.
I really, really love and appreciate your videos! So profound, fun and pleasant, healthy and musical!
Thank you! Very kind of you!
Enjoy!
Jeff
Thanks again Jeff. Love warming up with you
I wish I was a mezzo soprano 😔
And u r....?
Thank you, Jeff. This is a wonderful resource for me and my students alike.
I thought I was alto but I could also hit high notes. So this is amazing! I've been trying to find what I was. Thank you!
Warming up before I record a narration VO demo. Useful for more than singing. 🎶
Nice!!
Thank you so much for this
You seem like a musical genius. Interesting and challenging warms ups! Thank you
Just a really hard worker. Thank you! I appreciate it!
Love this warm up for the Mezzos! Thanks.
I’m a mezzo soprano and this is perfect. I’m getting back into choir
If I can ask! Do most of you start this warmup entirely in head voice? I find at least at first I don’t want to use chest voice till below Eb4!
I start it in my chest voice and then start to head into head voice if it gets too high (I was put in soprano at school but told I could do anywhere from baritone to soprano)
Really nice vocal warm-up! Enjoyed it, Jeff. Thank you.
Thank you kindly!
i'm an alto, will it hurt my voice is I do this warm up?
Stop singing if it gets too high and you're not familiar with registration event technique. Otherwise, there is a lot of overlap between the alto and mezzo tessituras.
Best!
Jeff
I go 0 to 011 mike real quick not really I can sing e7 I'm alto
I can go from an F3 - A5 right now. I will keep working on these and see if I can improve further. I am a beginner :-) Thanks for these videos
Thanks for this Jeff! It's incredible that after doing this warm-up my voice feels so free!😀
Not only do I use this warmup for every audition, but I used this before every show when I was playing Ariel Moore in Footloose! Worked wonders!!
Awesome! So glad it has served you so well!
Since quarantine started I started to try and improve my singing
