- Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict stone cottage in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, we start knocking down the chimney! It was not an easy task!

OMG! You are far braver than I, climbing up that ladder to the chimney. You are a good, hard worker, but lordy you do take chances.
That’s a lot of stone you moved - wow. Clearly not a man bothered by heights! Nice video yet again - loving the progress.
Thanks 👍
I am so envious of you two. Wish I was 25 year's younger. Enjoy life while you can. It passes so quickly.
Thank you we will. 👍
Admire your truck on attitude as one job done creates another but hey this your dream❤ Step by step enjoy the journey😊
Not to trivialise your hard work Sam, but the start of the video where you were filling up the formwork of the breakthrough reminded me of the old silent movies from the likes of Harold Lloyd as most of the time lapse videos show folk in the one place doing a job, but because you were moving around a lot my childhood memories of watching these old films on tv came back.
That's some tremendous progress you made this week, it will certainly be taking its toll on you physically but I can't even imagine the sense of satisfaction you must have looking at what was once a derelict old building and seeing the new lease of life you're giving it..
The walls will soon hear the laughter and conversations of a family home once again - more power to you, with the greatest of respect from Glasgow
Thanks Scott. Never thought I'd be compared to a silent movie but I like it!
Another job well done by the
men Sam and Euan😊 it looks much bigger inside without that bulky fireplace😊
What a lot of hard work and well done Euan excellent filming Sam can hear and see your joy that Becca soon back tc all luv to every one from the oldies 🤗🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍👍🌟🌟
Thanks 👍
The place is looking great - what a huge amount of work it's been. You have enough stone piled up to build another small building! Massive respect for what you're doing, My dad was like you - he'd take on a large project he'd never done before, and learn each part before he did it (after consulting with experts).
Yes it's good to have an expert on the end of the line. Makes things a bit less scary!
Out of curiosity, all the stones that have been removed and may have to be reused, have you put them in piles of similar size? Perhaps a job for the kids if they fancy. Depends how much they like to help! Just thought it makes it easier when searching for the 'right' stones.
I think you are all doing an awesome job.
What an amazing week of work! You accomplished a huge amount, Sam. I do watch several other channels, and it's astounding how folks with zero DIY skills can learn to renovate a whole building and do it well. I bet you could rebuild those stone corners yourself. Give it a try! Glad Rebecca will be back!
Thankyou I will probably end up doing it, ive rebuilt the gable top and both doorway heads, slow and steady I'll get it done
What a work ethic you have Sam! You can be very proud of your efforts and hard work. Becca will be back to help you again soon.
That's the plan! 😉💪💪
What an amazing task ,weellll done sam ,i love rebecca ,glad ur pickin her up from airport ,least ur get dinners cooked for u and son loll ,great video today cant wait for more ,hope someone replies and u get help on ur stones buildxx
Yep no more ready meals for me! 🤣
The very first video I was on your channel was the one that you were in the barn and trying to remove all these rocks and poop LOL
Ha ha! Yes that was a big job! Can't believe I had to move those rocks a second time!
100K plus 6months moove in payimg off next25years working for the. Man
Or being able todo itself maybe 4years at themost i reckon thats a good sweat equity and its all yours
Great job
Very true. Love this! Never thought I'd own a house let alone a stone cottage with land!
The chimney stack was so lose it really had to come down, before it comes down when someone is in the building 😮
Yep it was for the best
you did a massive amount of work .
Gawd! You are sooooo strong! Your muscles must be amazing. Lucky Bec!! Love your sense of humor though and how hard you work for your family. BTW Bec, I'm not lusting after your man - I'm an old lady who still appreciates looking. ROTFL!!
Thanks, the heavy work certainly keeps me strong
I would get rid of that big fireplace. The room will always be cold as it's so big. They used them for cooking on back in the day, that's a basic one so be best to take it down and build a new one. Will save you a lot of time, and you will probably appreciate it in the future.
👍
👍
Well done, Sam and Euan 👌👍 An incredible amount of hard graft went into this week's vlog. It will be great to have Becs back again. The progress you have both made is inspiring ❤
Thanks it has been a couple of weeks of very physical work!
Sam and Becky, could you get an apprentice through the many training schemes in Vec colleges etc. IT would be an amazing experience for some one .and teach them hard graft.
Great watch Sam , be careful up those
ladders x.
Incredible work Sam and Euan! We're in your region and know a few contacts for stone guys if that would be useful? Might be worth a chat.
Thanks Emma. Please feel free to email us. theirishhomestead@hotmail.com
@@theirishhomestead will do guys
Would love to take a trip to Ireland, Lol! Put my hubby to work as your stone mason, he would enjoy it. from Wisconsin 🇺🇸 ❤
Maybe one day!
The problem with chimneys is you can't tell whether they are solid on the inside, especially considering the amount of render on the outside.
Sam, ask the post mistress/shop keeper (whatever) if they know any stone masons. They tend to be the most knowledgeable people in the village. Can you post a request on a paper you could hang at the post office/shop? It might be worth asking if you could.
Hug Bec and Isabella for us. We've missed them!
And the only safe way to use them is to run pipe up for the smoke from an insert or a stove
Good suggestion that Abigail. Thanks. 👍
I am just so constantly inspired watching your progress.
I'm so glad! Thanks
Hope you feel proud about everything you've accomplished this week!
I do! Thanks so much.
the dog came in very purposefully with that stick, its a side hustle, he must have a buyer
🤣🤣
You can really get a sense of the space now you’ve knocked through to the living room and the bedroom. Well done!
Becca your one lucky lady having a hubby that loves ye that much. Poor thing missing you terribly ❤️
I know. Bless him! Thanks Sonya.
From week to week I really admire how clean and tidy a worker you are! The other thing is kindness just oooooozes from you videos. Beautiful family
Oh thank you! I do prefer a tidy site.
This is one of our ancestral homes in Leitrim -- you met my Mom last week :) great work!
👍
Hope Bec and Isabella had good trip away and returned safely and Sam you did a very good job with the chimney. Have a safe trip going to fetch Bec and Isabella at the airport.
Think Becs was very glad to be home and was blown away by the changes.
Great work Sam, if I was a Stone mason I would be there in a Heart beat. I am a Carpenter though 🙃
Thanks 👍
Sam, I have to admit, it was strange to not see the furry/feathered ones at the beginning of the video like when Rebecca is around (lol). Anyway, grand job you continue to do. Hoping you're all back together now and Rebecca got a 'wow' look when she got back home. Take care now!
Thanks. Hopefully normal service will be resumed with the furries soon. Bec was very impressed!
Wow wow wow ....what a work ethic and coming on fantasticly ......brilliant stuff......thank you for sharing 👌👏👍😀
So nice of you. Thanks for watching & supporting.
Great stuff as always folks. Thanks, Peter & Lorraine
Thanks so much guys. Really kind of you. ♥️
If you find a stone mason maybe he could do that chimney as well.❤
👍
Enjoyed the video. The birds 🐦 singing the song that God gave them to sing 🎶 is really beautiful.
"She lights me up".
👍
You killed it guy's. Mamma is going to be well pleased. Keep going you can sooooo it 😅
👍💪
Well what a week you and Euan have had. Accomplished heaps of jobs and it looks brilliant. It was a bit scary to see you going up the ladder on the roof. Glad the Girls are home and everything back to normal. Love from Australia ❤
Yes normal service feels resumed now. Thanks Pat.
Hi Sam, no wonder you are feeling tired, with all the hard work you are doing. The results that you are achieving are tremendous! Glad Becca is coming back, I know how much you missed her, but I missed her too. Can't wait to see her new hair do. Wishing you both the greatest reunion...x
Thank you so much!
A job well done Sam and Euan it won't do any harm putting a shout out for some help x
👍🤞🍀
Great job Euan and Sam. I trust Rebecca and Isobel had a great time.
Happy everything. ❤🎉❤
They did. Thanks Moira.
Fantastic progress in a short time - you should be really proud of the work you have done !
I am. Thanks 👍
Another awesome video so much work done coming along nicely
Thanks 👍
Great to hear you have the ladies back. Great video and so much done - pat yourself on the back Sam - and all of you.
Thanks Sean 👍
Fantastic progress Sam, looking great. Really hope you get some help with your stonework mate.
You and me both! 😉
What a worker you are take my hat off to you.
Thank you.
Ooh! I don't care for heights so I had to keep my eyes shut mostly. But so enjoyable otherwise.
🫣👍
Sam and Euan, you guys are troopers so much work done!
👍
Sam! My stomach flipped when you showed how you were getting up to the chimney 😮 I love your videos and look forward to them. Take care and be safe .
It was safe enough I didn't feel any danger
Well done
You should be very proud of what you have achieved so far.
Keep up the good work
Thank you. 👍
Is there a "Builders School" in the area? They mite have apprentice that could do the stone work for you for school credit.
I'll have a look
Becky’s face when she edits this 🤯😫well done Fred x
🤣🫣🙄
Glad to see you getting your other half back. Well done on the demo but yes an error on not clearing the room first. Don’t beat yourself up too much tho- look what you achieved without the backup of your wife while she was away.
Yep silly mistake luckily not too much damage. 👍
Well done Sam, that was a lot of hard work .
I hope you find a stone mason to give you a lift.
Please don't over do things, have a break and re charge the batteries.
Seeing you knock in the chimney stack took me back in time to :
I live in Lancashire and about 40 years ago I saw a mill chimney being nocked down / in, there was a guy walking round the top, he just had a sledge hammer and was knocking it in. It was the only way it could be done because the mill building wasn't being demolished.
They did some amazing things years ago. Could have been Fred Dibnah doing that!
lovely way to start my weekend, thank you again for sharing your work.
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks
Love the kitchen dream Rebecca, sure Sam will realise your dream, lovely viewing, such a great family
If you lived in Kerry I'd love to give you a day or two unfortunately I'm just a carpenter too though😂😂.
🤘
Wow - what a list of achievements! Rebecca will be pleased. That concrete pouring & shuttering were millimetre perfect. Hope you hear from a local stone mason to give you a hand out.
I hope so too! Thanks.
I watched the Patreon version last night and brilliant fantastic work by Sam . He have the place up and ready in no time . But any stonemasons are calling so get in touch with the homestead and do ya bit . Hope the girls had good trip away and returned safely
Thanks Rob. May have to tackle this one ourselves. No cavalry coming 🤣
@@theirishhomestead there probably too stoned to help 😂😅😂😅
Hi 👋🏻 Sam & Euan 😊 It’s coming on nicely especially now you’ve opened it up Sam 👍🏻 I can hear Becky shouting at the video as you’re knocking down that chimney making a right mess in your storage room 😮 Hope you find a stonemason to help you Sam 🤔 What about a bbq open day at the homestead inviting the locals so they can help sort stones out snd and a generally just help out . No Toby 😢 Hope he’s ok 👍🏻 Bet you can’t wait to collect your girls for the airport Sam & Euan 🤩 Take care and have a lovely weekend see you on the next exciting adventure love Stevie xx
Thanks Stevie. Was great to have the girls back. All is now tidy thankfully.
Just a thought but do you have any technical colleges near you that you could ask for student assistance? Hope is not a silly idea🤣❤️❤️❤️
Good idea
So close to 30k subs now…would love to see this as a reflection of all your hard work & great content! Love this channel. ❤️
👍
Great progress Sam, excellent video enjoy every minute, brings me back to my early days in renovation, the most memorable, hard work but the most enjoyable and inavative period of my life. You are lucky to have it recorded for prosperity, keep up the great work.
kind regards Sean 😊
Thanks 👍
Great video, you boys are a great team!!
Thanks so much 👍
I really enjoyed this video, as always 😀 Thank you! Have a lovingly weekend with Rebecca back!
Will do. Thanks. 👍
Can’t love this vlog/channel enough ❤❤❤
Some propa graft there fella! You'll have earned some r&r when the task is done! Keep going, at that rate of knots the light at the end of the tunnel is for sure moving forward!
Thanks 👍
That was a phenomenal amount of graft making that knock-through. I hope you are successful in getting someone to help you with the stone work. You are a terrific example of just getting on and doing stuff but it is also a great skill to know when you need expert help. The chimney dismantle was superbly well done too but all of the work you are doing shows just how much work is involved in preserving the good old and renewing the bad old. A very sincere 'well done' on all you are doing. Great to watch - very informative and hugely interesting.
Thankyou
Well you definitely got on with stuff and you definitely definitely scared the living doo dah out of my on that roof taking the chimney stack down, I could barely watch!! I'm pretty sure Becs is gonna give you a good telling off though lol, but well done, it's coming on for sure.
You got that right June! He never listens though 🙄
Sam , amazing progress 👏. Bec will be well impressed.
She was thanks Jay.n
Sam know I said it before, you should be so prod of yourself what a home your building for your family😊❤😊❤
Thank you so much!! ♥️
Smashing video as usual. The place is coming on. That tracked dumper is a bloomin life saver!
It really is!
A massive amount of work done.
Well done Sam & Euan
Good week work 🤗
Thank you! 😃
well done Sam and Euan sterling job mate coming along nicely
Thank you.
The well thought plan comes together. While being open to changes in plans along the way. The prideful feelings you are given across many miles. Wonderful wonderful. Well done.
Just as most personal momentous events happen this one is epic for memory making.
Thanks everyone. The editing is spot on.
Thank you.
We are definitely making memories
Amazing work on this project. It's fascinating to see the progress - It's all coming together 👍 It's eerie to think that when those stones and shelves were originally installed, the world was such a different place.
Indeed, if those stones could talk, the stories they could tell!
Yes I love imagining how it was when it was first built and the people who lived there. The amount of work involved is mind blowing!
Great work while the girls have been away. I bet Rebecca was so happy with the progress you have made. Everyone takes a risk with something or other. Just be careful and stay safe. Or safe-ish anyway
I was so impressed Andrew. The boys had done so much work!
Sam, your setup isn't half as sketchy as Fred's - he must've had a hell of a handshake, he could grip a ladder, like nobody I've ever seen before or since. Sam, you're really making progress with this build - it won't be long, before all the 'big' jobs are done. Having said that, if you keep on reclaiming stone at this rate, you'll have enough to build another house. 😁 Keep up the good work 👍👍
Very true that guy was amazing to watch in action. Becs wants a stone wall so we will have plenty for that plus raised beds and a sunroom! 🙄🫣
@@theirishhomestead Sam, as you know, Ireland has no shortage of stone. Indeed, if you ever run out, stick your shovel in the ground and you’ll find more than you need.😃 Sam, I look forward to your next episode. Slan go foill 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank goodness for that great little machine. Good job!
Thanks 👍
Very well done! Follow that Dream, and keep on keeping on!❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!!
Well Sam your not frighten of hard work hope you get the help with a stone mason
Thanks. But don't think the cavalry are coming lol
PLEASE don't push yourself. Take a day off and rest when needed, listen to your body, or God will make you rest. Better to take 1 or 2 days than 1 to 2 years or more.❤
You're doing a great job 👍
They filled out paperwork and they have a year to complete this. Otherwise, they are not gonna be able to get the grant money. The building has to be habitable within a year from the time the grant was given. Otherwise they lose out on 70,000 pounds I believe. They couldn’t start work on the buildings until they had the paperwork in and an appointment to see the property to document the condition of the buildings before and after the year. Believe the video was out a few months ago.
Thank you, I will
Great job !! Welcome home we all missed you 🙏❤️👩🏻🦳.
Thank you!!
Beautiful opening and closing segments of the film along with the wonderful songs of the birds. Lots of good work achieved this episode, but Sam, I can't believe that with all the clearing and moving of those huge rocks to clear a space, you didn't then move the washer dryer et al to the cleard space! At least you didn't destroy the washer and dryer! 😁
Well done Sam if you rebuild chimney please line it with stainless steel steel liner you’ll never have a problem all creosote will flake to bottom greatest investment we ever made
👍
Unbelievable work ethic every week Sam! Just getting it done attitude is inspiring! Loving how this is coming together! Had the absolute fear watching you on the roof 😂
👍
maybe consider a shipping container to store of all of that, you clearly have enough work to do without moving things around constantly…..otherwise great progress!
It was discussed but so far the barn is doing well.
Sent you an email re stone mason.
👍
Where’s Toooobbbeeeee? 😜🇬🇧🐶
🤣🫏 still plodding around!
I live in Ecuador. Your old school ladder is everyday life here.😂
Its such a help
Well done Sam on the stone removing not an easy task. Yourself and Euan were busy while Becky and Isabella were away. I am sure you really pleased to have the girls home. You will be busy catching up on their trip.Take care and stay safe .God bless you all xxxx
👍
Fantastic amount of work done. I'm sure Becky will be over the moon with all the progress made in her absence.
Is it ireland west Airport you fly from? I'm just 10mins from the airport. 😊👍
Yes Ireland West Airport
That's some big job you are tackling Sam! And Bec... did you tell him off for not wearing his hard head and eye protection during the demolition 😂Sunny greetz from Flanders
Certainly did! 🤣🙄
Great video! It will be so worth it...keep up the great work and thank you for bringing us along on the journey!
Thanks so much!
WOW...incredible homestead...incredible transformation...it's going to be awesomeness...🍀🇨🇦
Hope so!
Sheila & I are in constant awe as to the amount of REALLY hard work and "learn as you go" stone masonry. Keep up the great work. Mark & Sheila Florida USA
Thank you so much!
Hi Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. Just watched your last video. Well done Sam (& Euan) for keeping up the excellent work whilst Bec's is away. My wife and I watch all of the Irish homesteading UA-cam video's and your channel video's have the best combination of time-laps and commentary. We are always eager to watch the next one. We moved to Galway three months ago and although our house and land do not need to massive amount of work you guys are doing, your videos always inspire me to get 'doing'. My wife is currently away on a 'girly holiday' so I'm home alone and completely get your sentiments in your previous video regarding us working as a team, I'm feeling like a motorbike with a wheel missing right now! Big respect for your piece following the AA meeting, you are a hero.
Thanks mate, im grateful for being able to do this in my life while I'm still fit and healthy, one day at a time and it will be built, I look forward to our first night in the house
